Weekly information from us to you

Accessibility improved in the CBD Increased parking options for disability permit holders have been welcomed by people from across the region with mobility issues.

Wagga Wagga City Council recently completed work on an additional six mobility car parking spaces in Baylis, Fitzmaurice, Thompson and Peter streets. Volunteer driver for Junee Community Transport Barbara Smith brings Junee residents to Wagga several times a week for their appointments or medical treatment. She said the mobility car spaces make the drop offs easier and safer for the drivers and their clients. “The lay-back ramps are so helpful when getting wheelchair-bound clients into and out of the car; I just don’t have to worry about the gutter,” she said. “And the longer car spaces are great for the bus as we have more room to operate the bus ramp safely.” The six spaces recently installed are the first of the 12 planned to increase mobility parking spaces in Wagga Wagga’s CBD. The additional six will be completed in 2018/19. When all stages are complete there will be a total of 27 disabled parking spaces in 20 locations across the CBD. Increasing accessible parking in the city centre is one of a number of actions identified in Council’s Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP) 2017-2021. In Wagga’s Local Government Area, 18.2 per cent of the population are living with a disability and 9.4 per cent of the population are carers for persons with a disability. You can read the Disability Inclusion Action Plan at wagga.nsw.gov.au/diap. Council staff have recently installined six new mobility parking spaces across the CBD (pictured below).

If the parking area is limited to: • More than 30 minutes – the vehicle can park for an unlimited time • 30 minutes – the vehicle can park for up to two hours

• Less than 30 minutes – the vehicle can park for a maximum of 30 minutes In areas signposted as ‘No Parking’, a vehicle can stop for no longer than five minutes to drop off or pick up passengers or goods. The driver must remain within three metres of the vehicle. (NSW Government regulations for vehicles displaying a disability parking permit when the vehicle is used to transport the permit holder)

It was sponsored by the Shakespearian Society of Wagga Wagga, reputedly the oldest in Australia, which is how the garden got its name,” he said. “The walled courtyard garden is true to the style of Shakespeare’s 15th century England when the gardens of the time incorporated plants such as small box hedges and conifers. “Urns, decorative statues, pavers in customary patterns and gates adorned with a traditional motif complete the Elizabethan period atmosphere of the

TREE-MENDOUS COMMUNIT Y FUN

The whole community is invited to rug up, head outdoors and lend a hand to plant 1500 native seedlings in celebration of National Tree Day on Sunday 29 July. Wagga Wagga City Council’s Environmental Education Officer Samantha Parsell said it’s a chance to get your hands dirty, connect with nature and participate in a positive initiative for the environment. “National Tree Day started in 1996 and in 22 years more than 3.8 million people have planted 24 million trees and plants," she said. “This year’s site at Rocky Hill Reserve was selected to revegetate a remnant patch of bushland located within an urban area. “Revegetating the area with native grasses and shrubs will improve the habitat and can boost the native animal population. “We’ll plant 1500 grasses and shrubs including three species of wattle, three native grasses, bush pea, prickly tea-tree and kangaroo thorn. “Reptiles and birds like

kookaburras, fairy wrens, wattle birds and honeyeaters call this area home. “National Tree Day is important because it gets the community actively involved in environmental initiatives. “We are looking forward to a great response from the community – last year 146 people got involved which was a fantastic effort.”

NATIONAL TREE DAY

• Sunday 29 July, 10am-noon. • Rocky Hill Reserve, behind the Monumental Cemetery, Kooringal Road (follow the signs to the tree planting location). • Volunteers should wear enclosed footwear, sun protection and bring along wet weather gear and a pair of gardening gloves. • All participants are treated to a free sausage sizzle and a seedling to take home. wagga.nsw.gov.au/enviroevents

PEDESTRIANS REMINDED TO BE AWARE AT INTERSEC TIONS

Do you use your mobile phone while walking? It’s common behaviour in many cities, but it can also be risky, especially when crossing roads. According to Transport NSW, more than 1500 pedestrians are hit on NSW roads each year. Last month, a state wide pedestrian safety program, ‘Look Out Before You Step Out’ was rolled out by Wagga Wagga City Council in collaboration with Roads and Maritime Services, to remind pedestrians to stay alert when crossing the road. Director Commercial Operations Caroline Angel said 219 non-slip, vinyl signs were laid on footpaths in 52 locations across the city. “The ‘Look Out Before You Step Out’ signs were placed at pedestrian locations with high usage, such as

schools, hospitals, traffic light crossings and shopping centres," she said. “Research indicates that mobile phones can be a distraction for pedestrians and it’s hoped that the signs

will remind pedestrians to pay attention and be mindful when crossing roads.” The signs will be reviewed in September for wear and tear and replaced if necessary.

TAKE CARE ON BAYLIS STREET DURING STREET LIGHT WORKS Excavation works will take place on the western side of Baylis Street between Forsyth and Morgan streets from Monday 23 July to repair a street lighting fault. Street lighting on the western side of Baylis Street from the Union Club Hotel to Harris Scarfe is currently nonoperational. The fault has been

isolated to two light poles near 110 Baylis Street (Kathmandu), with excavation works required at that location to repair the conduit. Pedestrians are asked to take care in the area, which will be fenced off until Friday 27 July (weather permitting) to reinstate the footpath following the excavation and

repairs. Two car parking spaces will also be unavailable between 7am to 5pm while the electrical repairs take place. Local businesses have been advised of the emergency works and Council will endeavour to minimise disruption as much as possible.
