SMOOTH DRIVE ON DOBNEY The $5.6 million rehabilitation of Dobney Avenue and Pearson Street has almost hit the halfway mark, with night works now underway on Pearson Street. The upgrade of Dobney Avenue wrapped up on Wednesday night (18 May) with the final seal laid at the intersection with Chaston Street. Continued inside
PLEASED WITH PROGRESS: Council’s Director Infrastructure Services Warren Faulkner says the night works have delivered a much smoother drive for motorists using Dobney Avenue. Works have now started on the Pearson Street rehabilitation phase.

RECONCILIATION: A Wiradjuri and First Nations Elder lights a candle during the 2021 National Sorry Day ceremony in Wagga Wagga, remembering the Stolen Generation Survivors, families, and children who did not return home.
"Be Brave. Make Change." Council will hold an event next week to commemorate National Sorry Day 2022 at the Sorry Day Rock located in the Wollundry Lagoon precinct, adjacent to the Civic Theatre. The ceremony, to be held on Thursday 26 May 2022 from 10:30am, will provide a chance for people to come together in the healing process for the Stolen Generations who were forcibly removed from their family and communities. National Sorry Day is followed by National Reconciliation Week 2022 from Friday 27 May to Friday 3 June. Council’s Social Planning Coordinator Sarah Lehman said National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. “This year’s theme, ‘Be Brave. Make Change’, is a challenge to all Australians; individuals, families, communities, organisations and government to ‘Be Brave’ and tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation so we can make change for the benefit of all Australians,” Ms
Lehman said. “Last year Reconciliation Australia encouraged all Australians to take action; not just in National Reconciliation Week, but every week of the year. “This year, Reconciliation Australia is asking everyone to make change beginning with brave actions in their daily lives – where they live, work, play and socialise. “Our local Wiradjuri and First Nations community have nominated a Wiradjuri word for their curated 2022 program – Nguluway– which translated to English means Meeting Each Other.” The curated program includes a Cultural Walk and Smoking Ceremony and a Truth Telling Panel with Wiradjuri Elders, a Youth Event, a performance by the Wiradjuri Choir at the Victory Memorial Gardens and a Wiradjuri Art Mentoring Workshop. All the events on the program are free, although some will require a booking to attend. For more details on these events, you can access the full program by visiting wagga.nsw.gov.au/ reconciliationweek

From front page The rehabilitation project involves milling out the existing road pavement and putting in a thick continuous layer of asphaltic concrete pavement along Dobney Avenue, then Pearson Street, and finishing with the two roundabouts outside Bunnings. Wagga Wagga City Council’s Director Infrastructure Services Warren Faulkner said recent rain events had slightly delayed the planned completion of the Dobney Avenue works. “We have lost about six shifts because of adverse weather since the contractors (Fulton Hogan) began night works on 20 April, but the crews have been powering through this week, applying around 700-800 tonne of the asphalt overlay material each shift to complete the Dobney Avenue phase,” Mr Faulkner said. “I think people will have noticed after each night of the work being done that there is a noticeable difference to the quality of the road, in particular the smoother drive.” Night works on the Pearson Street section got underway at the Edward Street end on Thursday (19 May), with traffic being detoured via Dobney Avenue between 6pm and 6am. The road will be reopened to traffic during the daytime.

Mr Faulkner said Pearson Street has a greater crossfall than Dobney Avenue. “That will certainly be a challenge in terms of doing each segment of the road to transition back up to the existing kerb level, as well as half the road to make it trafficable the next day,” Mr Faulkner said. “We’ve got to do it in small 100 metre sections on alternate sides of the road for each night shift to be able to do those extra works to reshape the road so that the crossfall is not as steep in order to improve drainage as well as the ride. “We’ve got probably another 22 shifts to complete all of the Dobney Pearson rehabilitation work. “We ask for the continued patience and understanding of motorists and adjoining businesses as we work towards completing this important project on two of the busiest roads in our city’s sub-arterial network.” The $5.6 million project is 75 per cent jointly funded by the Australian Government in association with the NSW Government through its Fixing Local Roads program, with Wagga Wagga City Council providing the balance. Council launches Resilience Blueprint project
In times of increasing risks and disasters associated with a changing climate our community needs better ways of protecting what matters. That is why the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area (LGA) is part of the Resilience Blueprint Project for South East NSW, being coordinated through the Canberra Region Joint Organisation and delivered through local government. The Resilience Blueprint works with all levels of government, emergency services, researchers, risk analysts, businesses and communities to embed resilience in decision making. It provides hazard risk assessments of threats to what we most value, along with the tools and links to resources to protect them. It will help integrate resilience thinking into day-to-day decisions, build skills through training, and deliver high value regionally significant resilience projects. Wagga Wagga City Council has demonstrated resilience in what it has achieved during the challenges the LGA has faced over the last few years. General Manager Peter Thompson said through the Resilience Blueprint, Council will further embed resilience into its advocacy, strategic planning, reporting and overall program delivery. “The Resilience Blueprint is a road map for protecting
what is important to the people of Wagga Wagga and surrounds,” Mr Thompson said. “We are in the first stage of the project – Involve and Inform. We want to hear from you about what you most value, your capacity and capabilities to protect these things, and what impacts your decisions about protecting them. “As a council we are asking ourselves these same questions. Our collective responses will inform the Resilience Blueprint and help define the collective actions needed to make us more resilient to a changing climate.” The Resilience Blueprint Community Survey is now open and residents are being encouraged to have their say. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Dallas Tout said our community is resilient, having faced droughts, floods, fires and plagues – mice and locusts – many times over the years. “We are furthering our resilience by developing new approaches and tools to better prevent, prepare, respond and recover from disaster events and cumulative climate change impacts,” Cr Tout said. “We invite you to find out more about the Resilience Blueprint, take the Resilience Survey and let us know what
you want for your future. “We look forward to being on this journey with you and to hearing your feedback and ideas so that we can all confidently navigate our resilience journeys.” For more information on the Resilience Blueprint and to take the survey, visit wagga.nsw.gov.au/ resilienceblueprint
Book a hard waste collection
From front page “We also only accept certain things in our hard waste collection; items like mattresses, old fridges and so on need to be taken to the tip. “When you book your hard waste collection online, you’ll be able to read the list of what’s accepted, what isn’t, and where to take the things that don’t apply for the hard waste collection service. “If you’re adding things onto someone else’s pile that aren’t accepted, you’re causing issues for that person.
“So if you see someone else has put items out the front of their house, please use it as a reminder to book your own hard waste collection, rather than add to their pile. Booking your own collection is free and you won’t have to carry anything further than your own nature strip.” To book a hard waste collection, visit wagga.nsw.gov.au/waste or call Council’s waste contractor JJ Richards on (02) 5942 6150. Biodiversity Bite Climate change has a significant impact on biodiversity. The increasing pace of climatic changes means that plants and animals struggle to adapt at an equal speed. EXCITING PREMIERE: (from left) Civic Theatre Manager Carissa Campbell with Black Sun/Blood Moon actors Francesca Savige and Garth Holcombe ahead of the world premiere of the show at the CSU Riverina Playhouse this week.
Fantasy, puppetry, and a message of hope; new play premieres in Wagga Wagga The Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre, along with Critical Stages Touring, is proud to be bringing a world premiere to Wagga Wagga. Chris Bendall’s Black Sun/Blood Moon premiered at the CSU Riverina Playhouse on Friday (20 May), with another performance tonight (Saturday 21 May) at 7pm. Local audiences are the first to see the show before the production goes on tour nationally in 2023. Civic Theatre Manager Carissa Campbell is passionate about getting this show to our local community. “As a theatre, we get very excited about a world premiere, but this show is particularly close to our hearts,” Ms Campbell said. “We have been heavily involved with this production from its beginning. “Supporting the creation of new work is so important, particularly as our industry continues to recover from the impacts of the COVID pandemic, but more than that, this show has an incredibly important message about our climate and the power of individuals, and it is set right here in Wagga!” This not-to-be-missed new Australian production for teens and families is a beautiful adventure story inspired by the ‘Fridays for Future’ student-led protests that took the country by storm in 2019. Told across two intertwining storylines – one magical, one all too real – two unlikely heroes will follow their hearts to find their voices and save the world. “After more than two years developing this new production, I’m so excited to finally be able to share it with audiences in Wagga Wagga, where the story is set,” said Chris Bendall, the show’s
writer and director. “This is a work that I am so passionate about because, as a parent of two young girls, it’s an issue close to my heart. “It’s a story that we created because we want to engage in the climate conversation through theatre, through storytelling, and by creating an experience that is hopeful, inspiring, and leaves you with an idea of what you might be able to do as an individual.” In Black Sun/Blood Moon we follow Maddy, a ten-year-old climate champion, and Katie, the underachieving assistant of a climate-denying politician. When Maddy’s Dad, Paul, unwittingly inspires Maddy to take part in a school climate strike, their lives are turned upside down irrevocably. Maddy’s journey will put her at increasing risk as she takes her message to the powers that be, while Katie will find herself on the back of eagles, dolphins, and polar bears as she attempts to fulfil a fantastical quest from the future. Combining incredible life-size puppetry designed by Isla Shaw, brought to life using upcycled materials by Erth Visual and Physical Inc, alongside striking video design from Susie Henderson and sound design by Kingsley Reeve (Storm Boy, Pete the Sheep), the production will be a feast for the senses, and an experience the whole family can enjoy together. “I encourage everyone to support this new work,” Ms Campbell said. “It is filled with hope and magic for the whole family and will leave audiences inspired and hopeful for the change they can be.” For more information or tickets, visit civictheatre. com.au
Changing environments and ecosystems is a key threatening process to biodiversity. Council has adopted a corporate target of net zero emissions by 2040, and a community target of net zero by 2050 which will help mitigate impacts to biodiversity.

Grant to help residents get food scraps sorted
Wagga Wagga City Council recently received a NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) grant of $10,000 to help households become top food waste recyclers. Manager Council Business Darryl Woods said Council was one of 11 councils to share in $240,150 under the Scrap Together grants program. “This project will see the Scrap Together campaign rolled out across the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area where it will help residents understand what happens to food waste collected in their kerbside green lid bin and encourage them to use it well,” Mr Woods said.
Public Notices
The campaign was piloted in Clarence Valley, Kempsey, and Forbes local government areas and proved popular with residents, resulting in an average of 10 per cent increase in food waste recovered for recycling. “This funding will help keep food and garden waste out of landfill so it can be processed into compost that will improve soil health,” Mr Woods said. “It will enable Council to roll out an engaging campaign that will remind residents of the environmental benefits of recycling your food waste and how to use the service to best advantage.” Head of EPA Organics Unit Amanda
