New Wagga Wagga + Surrounds Visitor Guide
TOP ATTRACTIONS: Visitor Economy Assistant Heather Creed and Visitor Economy and Events Coordinator Fiona Hamilton encourage businesses and residents to grab their copy of the latest Wagga Wagga + Surrounds Visitor Guide.
Visitors will be able to step out with a copy of the latest Wagga Wagga + Surrounds Visitor Guide, complete with the best attractions, places to dine and stay when in our city and region. The 2020/21 visitor guide focuses on the strong domestic travel market that has emerged following COVID-19 and features 150 tourism businesses and seven partner shire councils - all members of Wagga Wagga City Council’s Wagga Tourism Partner Program. It highlights the strong foodie, cycling and nature-based experiences the city and surrounding region have offer. Visitor Economy and Events Coordinator Fiona Hamilton said the 64-page publication is being distributed to local tourism outlets and visitor information centres. “The guide is a marketing tool to help grow the 1.3M visitors who spend an estimated $385M in our city and region each year,” Ms Hamilton said. It will also construct an off-leash dog park in the basin on the corner of Yenda Avenue and Paradise Drive after the adjacent drainage dam extension works are completed.

Local campaign against gender-based violence begins Wagga Wagga City Council is encouraging the community to get involved in the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign starting next week. Emphasising the link between violence against women and human rights, the campaign starts on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and finishes on 10 December, Human Rights Day. The campaign further embeds the efforts of theDVproject:2650, which Council runs in partnership with Wagga Women’s Health Centre, to address the role equity and respect play in reducing domestic and family violence. Equity Project Manager Maryna Bilousova said the campaign demonstrates a unified approach across the globe raising much needed awareness. “Reaching 300 million people globally across 187 countries, the 16 Days of Activism campaign is a call to raise awareness about genderbased violence against women
at national and international levels,” Ms Bilousova said. “Talking locally about campaigns like this will enhance our community’s understanding of gender-based violence and serve as a reminder of our shared responsibility to make a longterm plan for prevention.” Ms Bilousova said that with a domestic and family violence rate 29.4 per cent higher than the NSW average, Wagga Wagga needs to do more to address disrespect and gender inequality. “We need more education on the different forms of abuse which make up domestic and family violence. There are 10 forms of abuse, which go far beyond physical violence – things like emotional abuse or controlling someone’s finances. “It’s important to remember that each of us can make a difference by reflecting on our words and actions, questioning an off-joke or a throwaway comment, or talking about respect with our family, friends and colleagues.” For more information visit wagga.nsw.gov.au/16days

OF THE
WEEK
Preparations begin for fire season Council’s Gregadoo Waste Management Centre recently hosted a familiarisation session for the Lake Albert Rural Fire Brigade as part of preparations for the upcoming bushfire season. The brigade took the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the centre’s layout and water sources in case of a fire onsite, and tested out Council’s new water truck. The truck holds 12,000 litres and features two cannons which can shoot water over 50 metres. Supervisor Solid Waste Mathew Windle said the volunteers were impressed with the truck and Council’s firefighting capability. “We specifically ordered this truck to suit the needs of the centre as the range of the cannon keeps staff well away from any danger,” Mr Windle said. The group also used the day to practice relaying water from Council’s water truck to the fire service truck for emergency refilling. “We have a responsibility to ensure we’re prepared for any emergencies onsite,” Mr Windle said. “We need the ability to eliminate any combustion fires and air pollution incidents as well as suppress dust. “We really appreciate the Lake Albert Rural Fire Brigade volunteers spending their Sunday here to help us all get prepared for the fire season ahead.”
Little Alfa and Charlie will be $212, and their sisters will be $247, which includes desexing, first vaccination, deworming, microchip, lifetime registration and ID tag. New Jubilee Park hockey field ready to roll
READY TO ROLL: Wagga hockey’s season will start on a new synthetic surface next year and was this week given the seal of approval by Wagga Wagga Combined Hockey Association Treasurer Karen Boyd and Council Strategic Recreation Officer Peter Cook.
Wagga Wagga Combined Hockey Association’s new season will hit off on a brand new synthetic surface next year after the field replacement project at Jubilee Park was finished ahead of schedule this week. Wagga Wagga City Council and Wagga Wagga Combined Hockey Association (WWCHA) teamed up in a 50-50 partnership to fund the $460K with the sporting group agreeing to project manage the works. The new field adds to several improvements at the complex including lighting, fencing, safety netting, storage areas and closed circuit security cameras.
Strategic Recreation Officer Peter Cook said Council’s partnership with WWCHA has proved successful in previous works and the field replacement project reinforced Council’s good working relationship with the association. “The new surface looks fantastic and will be a huge benefit to the sport in Wagga Wagga,” Mr Cook said. “Full credit to the hockey association for committing to this partnership with Council and ensuring the works have been completed on time and on budget.” WWCHA president Ken
Larkin said the association was fortunate to have a proactive community capable of managing such a project. “We have worked alongside Council on a number of projects now and the partnership we commit to with the support of our community members is a win-win for everyone,” Mr Larkin said. The new synthetic surface replaced a 13-year-old field and features a shock pad under the surface which reduces the chance of injury to players. The old surface is being recycled and will be used at a paintball facility near Sydney.
Annual permits for non-desexed cats and dangerous dogs The NSW Government has introduced annual permits for non-desexed cats and restricted and dangerous dogs as part of its commitment to promoting responsible pet ownership and improving animal welfare standards. Under the new requirements, which came into effect on 1 July 2020, owners of cats not desexed by four months of age are required to pay an $80 annual permit in
addition to their one-off lifetime pet registration fee. Owners of dogs of a restricted breed or formally declared to be dangerous are also required to pay a $195 annual permit in addition to their one-off lifetime pet registration fee. Regulatory Services Coordinator Kathleen Bagshaw said the new requirements were introduced to encourage cat owners to
desex their cats which, according to the RSPCA NSW, improves their health and wellbeing, even reducing the risk of some cancers. Desexing cats will also help ease the burden on animal shelters and reduce the devastating impact that roaming, stray and feral cats have on wildlife. “Cats are natural roamers and there’s no legal requirement for them to be contained like dogs,” Ms Bagshaw said. “Undesexed cats breed and people are often left with unwanted litters, which unfortunately can either end up at shelters or become strays. “As the population of cats expands in our region, so does the damage to our local native animal population.” Research from The Australian National University shows that domestic and feral cats are killing over two billion reptiles, birds and mammals each year in Australia – the majority of which are native animals. “When you consider that there are almost four million pet cats
in Australia, the importance of owners being responsible for their own cats becomes apparent,” Ms Bagshaw said. “We’re encouraging our community to do the right thing – register your pet, just like you do your car, and get them desexed,” Ms Bagshaw said. “Apart from being a legal requirement, registering and microchipping your pet ensures that if your pet goes missing, we’ll be able to identify it and return it to you. And getting your cats desexed will help stabilise our cat population and help protect our native animals.” Permit exemptions are in place for cats that are kept for breeding purposes by members of recognised breeding bodies, and cats which cannot be desexed for medical reasons. Annual permit fees go directly to the Companion Animals Fund which pays for companion animal management by local councils including pounds/shelters,
ranger services, dog recreation areas, and education and awareness programs. The fund is also used to operate the NSW Pet Registry and carry out responsible pet ownership initiatives. You can register your pet at the Glenfield Road Animal Shelter, at Council’s customer service desk, or online via the NSW Pet Registry. For more information about annual permits visit olg.nsw.gov.au

Drive So Others Survive: motorists urged to take the pledge Large yellow ribbons are being prominently displayed at Wagga Wagga Civic Centre and along several roads across the city during National Road Safety Week 2020. The ribbons are part of Wagga Wagga City Council’s support for the campaign, which runs from 15–22 November, and is an annual initiative of the Safer Australian Roads and Highways (SARAH) Group, government and road safety organisations. The local launch, held on Monday (16 November) was attended by Peter Frazer, the
founder and president of SARAH, and Transport for NSW and Riverina Highway Patrol representatives. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM said the community is being urged to take a pledge to Drive So Others Survive. “Around 1200 people die each year in avoidable road incidents on the nation’s roads,” Cr Conkey said. “According to the Centre for Road Safety, between 2014 and 2018 in the Wagga Wagga LGA there were 579 crashes
resulting in 11 deaths, with speed, alcohol and fatigue the main contributors. “We’re asking road users to think about their behaviour behind the steering wheel, what they can do to make the roads safer for all users, and to talk about driving safely with family, friends and colleagues. “Go online and pledge to not drive distracted, to not speed and to never drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol.” Peter Frazer’s daughter Sarah was on her way to Charles Sturt University at Wagga Wagga when
she died in a crash on the Hume Highway in 2012. The 23-year-old’s car had broken down and she had pulled into the emergency breakdown lane. While the tow-truck driver was hooking up her car, a passing truck sideswiped the broken-down car killing both Sarah and the tow-truck driver instantly. Mr Frazer thanked Council for its support of SARAH and National Road Safety Week. To take the Drive So Others Survive pledge visit roadsafetyweek. com.au
