From Front Page Council’s Waste Education & Communications Officer Alice Kent said the stations encourage residents to access free tap water when they are out and about. “We want to remind people that tap water tastes great and reusable bottles create less waste, helping to look after the environment,” she said. “Currently only 40 per cent of single-use bottles make it to the recycling bin, which is another reason why we should all use reusable bottles.” At the launch of the Choose Tap campaign, reusable water bottles were handed out to the public, who were encouraged to make a pledge to reuse and refill bottles with tap water. Based on the feedback collected at the event, Council will calculate how

many single-use plastic bottles have been saved. Residents will also see Choose Tap glass bottles in 21 cafes and restaurants around Wagga that have signed up in support of the campaign to cut down on bottled water. Riverina Water’s Manager Works Austin Morris said the campaign’s slogan ‘Great taste, less waste’ accurately sums up the project. “People will be able to enjoy the great taste of our local water using our reusable bottles, and in the process they will reduce the amount of plastic waste they produce, as well as save money. Tap water costs only 0.14 cents per litre compared to over three dollars per litre for bottled water.” The campaign launch aligns with National Water Week, which runs from 15 to 21 October. Get ready to roll, Wagga Wagga. The city’s first pump track at Tolland’s Emblen Park is nearing completion. About 1800 tonnes of dirt was shaped and moulded last month in preparation for laying the track’s asphalt surface, which started going down this week. The track design features a figure-eight circuit with a track

running through the middle and has regular banked ramps and smooth curved corners. At its highest peak, the track reaches about two metres above ground level. The unique design of pump tracks makes them suitable for bicycle or scooter riders, skateboarders and rollerbladers. The track site will also feature a landscaped rock fence, picnic

settings and four solar-powered motion detection lights. The Tolland pump track has been funded by a $50,000 grant through the Family and Community Services' Social Housing Community Improvement Fund (SHCIF) and a $30,000 contribution from Wagga Wagga City Council. The track is due for completion at the end of October.

WORKING TOGETHER: Council staff and participants of The Leisure Company took part in a recent street audit to look at ways to increase accessibility in the CBD, such as the new drainage at the pedestrian crossings along Baylis Street.

BREAKING DOWN BARRIERS IN THE CBD

Council is working to make Baylis and Fitzmaurice Streets more accessible for people with disabilities. The first step was taken last week with Council staff and participants from The Leisure Company, including people who experience accessibility issues, conducting a street audit of Baylis and Fitzmaurice streets to review barriers that prevent access. The audit found accessibility along Baylis and Fitzmaurice streets is currently fairly good, however, a few small changes would make a big difference to where people can sit, eat and relax. Suggested changes included raising Council tables along the streets slightly so that all community members can comfortably be seated at them, removing trip hazards such as loose tiles, and working with local shop owners to assist them to improve shopfront accessibility. Program officer at The Leisure Company Sarah Manley says ongoing consultation between Council

and participants of The Leisure Company increases opportunities and promotes access and inclusion for people with disabilities within our community. “By investing their time, Council is ensuring people with disability have more opportunity to participate in all of the great things our community has to offer, and ensures investments are relevant and funding is being well spent," she said. Council will now determine the costings for these items to determine which actions can be progressed. The audit aligns with the Council's Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP) 2017-2021, which included an action to consult with people with accessibility issues to assist in reviewing barriers to access in Baylis and Fitzmaurice streets. This also aligns with the recently adopted Community Strategic Plan, Wagga View, which discussed the need to activate community spaces to create connectedness.

Have your cake and eat it too on Wombat Day Sunday might be one of your best chances to sneak a peek at the city’s favourite, but rather elusive, wombat. Dozer, the 17-year-old barenosed wombat, will be the star of the day on October 22, which is known as Wombat Day. To celebrate the day the Botanic Gardens zoo crew are throwing a special community celebration on Sunday morning (before Dozer dozes off for his daily nap). The free celebration will include wombat-themed short talks shared by Wagga Wagga wombat enthusiast James Mercer-King. Wombat Day is also traditionally marked with cake, usually baked in the shape of the Australian marsupial. “A celebration wouldn’t be complete without cake, and we are fortunate enough to have a local culinary wizard offer to bake a 3D wombat shaped cake for the day,” Supervisor Horticulture Henry Pavitt said. “The Wagga Wagga community is invited to Dozer’s pen to celebrate with a slice of cake and learn more about the iconic Australian wombat.” Wombat Day turns a spotlight on the often forgotten, or misunderstood marsupial. “Wombats are often seen as being silly or slow, but they are very misunderstood in their body language and how they move about the environment,” Mr Mercer-King said. “Their sense of smell and hearing is very, very heightened … and they can move very quickly. They are faster than Usain Bolt and can get up to over 40km/h over short distances

A crowd of almost a hundred community members attended the public auction for sale of land for unpaid rates at the Civic Centre on 14 October. Under NSW Government legislation, councils have the ability to sell properties with outstanding rates balances of more than five years. Four of the seven properties sold at the auction, with another property sold shortly after to the highest bidder. There was significant interest in two unoccupied residential properties at the auction, with a Spring Street house selling for $255,000 and a Hillary Street house reaching $170,000. Council only recovers the unpaid charges and costs from the sale of land, with the remaining funds held in trust for the property owner.

The two unsold properties have been listed by private treaty to sell. Council’s Director Finance Natalie Te Pohe said the sale of land is a last resort option and urged residents to contact Council to discuss their account. “Council can only wear the financial burden for so long before it has an impact on other ratepayers and residents,” Director Finance Natalie Te Pohe said. “Rates are a core part of Council’s budget and make many projects and services possible such as road works, parks, vital maintenance and facilities such as the library. “If you’re having difficulty with your rates instalments, please contact Council’s rates department on 1300 292 442 and we will work with you to develop a reasonable payment plan.” wagga.nsw.gov.au/rates
