IN PREPARATION: Airport Manager Leon Burger at one of the sites at Wagga Wagga Airport where the upcoming emergency scenario will take place.
Registrations fly in for mock aircraft scenario More than 100 residents have answered a call to be volunteers during a mock emergency scenario to be staged at Wagga Wagga Airport next Saturday. Registrations flew in over a four-day period. City of Wagga Wagga staff have worked their way through the list, with 61 selected to be patients during the exercise. “I don’t think any of us could have imagined the popularity of the call out for volunteers. It is great to see so many local residents want to take part in what is a really important and serious exercise for the city,” Airport Manager Leon Burger said. “Where possible we prioritised volunteers on a first come basis, however, we were also mindful of making sure we had a mix
of people, including males and females and of all different ages. “We are taking this emergency exercise very seriously, which means simulating it as close to reality as possible within strict safety regimes. “One of our objectives is for volunteer role players to experience firsthand our capability and capacity to deal with aviation emergencies, but also to enjoy the experience.” Residents are also reminded that the scenario is for training purposes only. “The airport will be operating as normal on the day, so we are reminding residents that if they do see emergency vehicles or flashing lights on the day, not to be alarmed. “There will be announcements
and posters in the terminal on the day to notify people.” The emergency scenario is aimed at testing and evaluating the coordinated response required by all agencies in the event of a real disaster. The scenario involves a collision between a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) and commercial aircraft within Wagga Wagga Airport airspace. The passenger plane will be simulated by the use of a bus while the RAAF will provide a real helicopter for the exercise. The emergency exercise is a requirement by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority and is being carried out in partnership with the RAAF Base Wagga Wagga, and supported by local and state emergency services.
LOCAL BUSINESSES TO BENEFIT FROM SECOND ROUND OF GRANTS PROGRAM From front page The first round of funding was recently announced, with Romano’s Hotel receiving $3000 for the installation of two bi-fold windows and 222 Baylis Street receiving $3000 to give it a modern exterior and a new shopfront. “The Economic Development Grants are designed to encourage reinvestment in the city’s shopfronts and streetscapes through increased pedestrian activity and by enhancing the vibrancy of our retail precincts,” Manager City Strategy Tristan Kell said. “The types of projects businesses could apply for
funding for include alfresco dining, busker or street performer spaces and lighting and street facade improvements.” A total of $6500 in funding is remaining in the 2016/17 program, with grants available from a minimum of $500 to a maximum of $3000 per project. Applicants must make a financial (not in-kind) contribution either equal to or greater than the value of funding awarded through the program. Applications are open until 30 June.
