Museum upgrade moves forward A 25 tonne crane was in action this week to assist with the huge task of relocating the majority of the Museum of the Riverina’s collection to a safe, off-site storage location. Clearing the site is essential before construction at the site is able to commence towards the end of the year.
Last year Council received funding from Create NSW to redevelop the museum. A concept design of the redevelopment will be released when plans for the redevelopment are placed on public exhibition. One item that will remain on site is the historic Cook’s
Galley. Council successfully secured a $20,000 heritage grant from the Office of Environment & Heritage to fund the professional preservation of this significant object, which is listed on the NSW Heritage register. More information at wagga. nsw.gov.au/more-upgrade.

Reconciliation at the heart of draft plan Recognising and valuing Wiradjuri culture and building relationships based on respect with all First Nations Peoples are at the heart of Wagga Wagga City Council’s draft Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP).
The draft RAP was developed after extensive consultation between First Nations Peoples in the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area and Council staff, with feedback on the document currently being called for.
“Wagga Wagga City Council’s draft Reconciliation Action Plan clearly demonstrates Council’s commitment to working with our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members towards a better and stronger future,” Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM said. “It outlines how Council will play its part in recognising Wiradjuri culture and heritage, how we will work to increase employment and business opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and how we will ensure we build relationships based on respect and transparency with our community. “Council hopes that through this RAP we will strengthen our city where all community members value and respect our First Nations Peoples and our local Wiradjuri
culture and heritage.” In 2016 a RAP working group was formed, following consultation with Reconciliation Australia. At this point it was determined Council’s approach should be an “Innovate” RAP, which focus on outlining clear actions that work towards achieving Council’s vision for reconciliation. Throughout the development, Council has worked closely with Reconciliation Australia to ensure the RAP is consistent with best practice and has a clear framework to contribute to reconciliation by: • Building and encouraging relationships between the local Wiradjuri community and other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, communities, organisations, and the broader Australian community

• Fostering and embedding respect for the world’s longest surviving cultures and communities • Developing opportunities within Council to improve socio-economic outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities The draft RAP is on public exhibition until 10 July. View the document and make a submission online at wagga.nsw.gov.au/ public. Submissions can also be made emailed to council@wagga.nsw.gov.au, dropped into the Civic Centre or posted to PO Box 20, addressed to the General Manager. SCULPTURE GETS SOME TLC
One of the largest artworks in the city received some TLC this week. Life Balance is a five-metre high, three-tonne sculpture carved from a single river redgum tree by Riverina artist Ralph Tikerpae (pictured). Located near the Wollundry Lagoon at the entry of the E3 Art Space, the sculpture has been carefully reshaped after standing tall for the past 20 years. Mr Tikerpae worked over the past week on his sculpture with chisels and power tools and carve, sand and sculpt the wood, followed by a fresh protective coat. “Ralph’s stature as an artist and sculptor has only increased since he created Life Balance for the people of Wagga Wagga, and it’s great that we’ve been able to get him back to undertake some restoration work on his artwork,” Cultural Officer Tim Kurylowicz
said. “Wagga Wagga has a great reputation for its arts and culture, and this is reflected in the artworks that can be seen in our galleries and public places across the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area. “We get to experience the work of artists from around
the world and Australia, but it is really special to have these ongoing connections with artists living and working in our region.” Mr Tikerpae is a Wyalong-based sculptor and painter who has exhibited in Orange, Armidale, Wollongong, Forbes, Wagga Wagga and Bondi for Sculpture by the Sea.

Vibrant city the focus of Cultural Plan 2020-30 We need your help to shape a 10-year vision for the creative life of our community. Council is currently developing the Wagga Wagga Cultural Plan 2020-30, a blueprint for building a vibrant city with the facilities, infrastructure and cultural precincts to meet the needs and expectations of the community. Cultural Officer Tim Kurylowicz called on residents from across the Wagga Wagga region to add their voice to discussion and help shape the plan. “Thoughts and ideas across key topics have been collected over the past four months, with a community consultation evening to be held on Wednesday 3 July to present the key ideas we’ve received and seek further comment,” he said. “The Cultural Plan 2020-30 will reflect the diverse needs of our community across a number of key themes, including: • Wiradjuri and Aboriginal culture and heritage • Community groups and volunteering • The city’s cultural venues and collections • Creative opportunities for neighbourhoods,
suburbs and villages • Learning and education • What happens in our streets, parks and open spaces “With this plan, Wagga Wagga will be equipped to take full advantage of the support that culture and creativity provide for social connectivity, economic development, and individual personal wellbeing for all our community.” So far a mix of suggestions have been made, including holding more events in the suburbs to activate local neighbourhoods, ideas to celebrate Wiradjuri culture, how to expand existing cultural facilities and improving the streetscape. To join the discussion, visit waggaview.com.au/ culture or longer submissions can be emailed or posted to Council. The community consultation evening will be held on Wednesday 3 July from 5.30pm to 7.30pm at Romano’s Hotel. To RSVP, visit the website. The ideas and submissions will be used to prepare the draft Cultural Plan, which would then be placed on public exhibition later this year for further feedback.

FURRY FRIENDS TO FROLIC Garden gurus to share rose pruning tips IN NEW OFF-LEASH AREAS Learn from our
Make no bones about it, dogs love nothing more than having the freedom to run and roam while out with their owners. Walking a pooch has great exercise and wellbeing benefits, for owners and their best friend, however, letting dogs roam in public places can pose problems. Unrestrained dogs have the potential to harass or annoy members of the public, be involved in an attack with another dog, or create a mess if left to urinate or defecate on public property. The reminder comes as the city’s seventh off-leash area has been established and a 12-month trial for an eighth site gets underway. A fenced section of Explorer Park in Booroma is Wagga Wagga’s newest offleash area, joining the existing areas in Narrung Street, Wilks Park in North Wagga, Willans Hill (various areas), Kurrajong Avenue in Forest Hill and two locations in Lake Albert (Boat Club reserve off Plumpton Road and the O’Halloran Park agility track at the northern end). The eastern end of Wiradjuri Reserve will be part of a year-long trial, which will assess the usage and compliance of the area as an off-

Dogs have the potential to act differently in unfamiliar surrounds, they can easily get over excited or spooked, which could lead to a dangerous situation or attack,” Manager Environment and City Compliance Mark Gardiner said. “Keeping dogs on a lead while out and about helps remove this risk. It also helps owners notice when their animal is doing its business, which can be cleaned up straight away and not left to make a mess for other community members or council staff to clean up.” Under the Companion
Animals Act 1998 having unrestrained dogs in public places, which are not dedicated off-leash areas, is an offence and may result in the dog being seized, and or penalty notices of $220 issued. Serious incidents involving noncompliance to the Act may result in the matter being heard before a Local Court. The Act also outlines that owners are responsible for cleaning up after their dog when in a public place. The penalty for not picking up after your dog is a $275 fine.
