Thousands flock to Fusion16 Fusion16 burst to life at the weekend with more than 10,000 people filling the Civic Centre precinct to enjoy all the fun, flavours and flair of the city’s annual multicultural street festival. For the sixth consecutive year Wagga Wagga’s culture took centre stage, bringing together all that is great from the 98 cultures who call the City of Wagga Wagga home. “Food, music, art and entertainment from across the globe combined in harmony to show Wagga Wagga’s diversely-rich
community,” Community Sector Manager Janice Summerhayes said. “Thanks goes to the Wagga Wagga community for supporting the day, with numbers on par with previous years, and to all the stall holders, artists and entertainments who made the day possible.” While the aromas of the food village have gone and the entertainment main stage has been packed away, part of the City of Wagga Wagga’s Fusion16 will be sticking around a little longer. 98 Faces from 98 Places, an art installation made up of tile decals by photographer Yenny Huber, will remain in the Civic Centre forecourt for the next few weeks. The large-scale artwork features portraits of Wagga people captured by Ms Huber on the streets of Wagga Wagga over two
days. The collection also features archival images from the Museum of the Riverina, Wagga Wagga City Library and Charles Sturt University Riverina Regional Archives. “98 Faces from 98 Places continues the Fusion theme by showcasing the diverse cultural heritage and multi-faith community of our City, both past and present,” Mrs Summerhayes said. “The installation is a great conversations starter, so if you did not make it to Fusion at the weekend or would simply like to view the installation head to the front of the Civic Centre on Baylis Street for a look.” Fusion16 was proudly funded and presented by the City of Wagga Wagga and Multicultural NSW in partnership with Multicultural Council of Wagga Wagga, Riverina Community College and major sponsor The Daily Advertiser. FACES: 98 Faces from 98 Places is on exhibition in the Civic Centre Forecourt as part of Fusion16.

FAMILY DAY CARE TO MARK CHIL DREN’S WEEK
Art and conversation will be at the centre of Wagga Wagga Regional Family Day (WWRFDC) Care’s Children’s Week celebrations this year. Children’s Week is celebrated nationally from October 22 to 30, highlighting that every child has the right to enjoy their childhood and showcase children’s talents, skills, abilities. WWRFDC will open the doors to their Botanic Gardens play centre on Wednesday 26 October from 10am to

noon for all families in the area to come along and experience the family day care model first hand. WWRFDC children and educators will take part in a special art workshop conducted by Wagga Wagga mural artist Luke Vineburg. Luke will work with the children to paint new garden beds at the centre. He will also have conversations with the children throughout the day using what the children tell him to create a bold, bright, colourful mural to be hung
at the centre later in the year. “The open day and art sessions are a great opportunity for WWRFDC to celebrate all children, provide a platform for their voices to be heard and extend children’s abilities and learning through the arts and sustainable practices,” WWRFDC Manager Kym Stewart said. WWRFDC is now in its 41st year and currently has 42 licenced educators who care for 365 children in the region each week.

GIVE YOUR BUSINESS AN O N L I N E A DVA N TAG E There are a handful of spots left for the next round of the Activate Online program, which starts on October 24. The City of Wagga Wagga and TAFE NSW Riverina have partnered with the NSW Small Business Commissioner to deliver the program, which helps small businesses unlock their online potential. Lighter machinery and extra help has been called in to assist Council staff through one of the most difficult starts to a spring mowing program in years. “Unprecedented rain events this winter means we have been facing one of the most challenging spring mowing periods we have ever had,” Parks Operations Supervisor David Stapleton said. “The rain has affected the grounds a fair bit, through waterlogging. Because they are so wet we also haven’t been able to get in and do our usual broadleaf spraying program so grounds and reserves aren’t looking as good as they usually would this time of year. “We thank the community and sports user groups for being patient with us as we gradually work through the program.”
Every spring Council puts on an additional mowing team to accommodate the spring mowing program, where staff rotate through suburbs and villages mowing parks and open spaces. Some warmer days in September and October have resulted in crews being out and about maintaining parks and ovals. Smaller pieces of equipment and specialised tractors have been in use to help progress the program. “Henwood Park in Kooringal has been maintained by using a tractor with specialised turf tyres that don’t mark the ground. The tractor cuts the grass short to give the surface a chance to dry out and reduces the need to mow again for another couple of weeks. By this time it is hoped the ground has dried up and will be able

are still quite waterlogged and will take some time before we can get it back on track.“ Council will continue to work through the program when weather and saturation levels allow.
