Spring has sprung and it’s almost time to have some fun. Wagga Wagga City Council’s new children’s festival Spring Jam is just around the corner on Saturday 6 October. Held in the Botanic Gardens, Spring Jam will combine circus acts, adventure play, interactive fun, live entertainment, safaris, treats and more. There will be everything from hands-on interactive activities for the two to five-year-olds, to wild and wonderful experiences for six to 12-year-olds. Spring Jam will also feature our SJ Radio Reporters Connor Gregurke and Xyah McLaren, who will be shown the ropes of radio by Hit 93.1. The lucky duo were chosen as the reporters following an overwhelming amount of talented kids who entered the competition. To find out all the fun on offer at Spring Jam, head to visitwagga.com/springjam. LITTLE KIDS, BIG JOB: Our Spring Jam Radio Reporters Xyah McLaren and Connor Gregurke are going to learn tips and tricks from Hit 93.1FM's Dane (left) and Herbie (right) ahead of the new kids' outdoor adventure festival on Saturday 6 October.

Family fun day to mark 50 years Many of us are spending more time outside as the daylight hours get longer and the weather warms up; whether getting stuck into our own gardens or enjoying Wagga Wagga’s parks and gardens. The Family Garden Festival, to be held on 4 November is the perfect place to gather inspiration and celebrate the Botanic Gardens' 50th anniversary at the same time. Council’s Supervisor Horticulture Henry Pavitt said the whole community, whether they are green thumbs or not, are invited to enjoy a fun family day out.

BOTANIC GARDENS 50TH ANNIVERSARY: FAMILY GARDEN PARTY • Sunday 4 November, 9am – 4pm • Wagga Wagga Botanic Gardens • Free entry and free activities “There will be something for everyone, young and old," he said. "From the everpopular miniature trains to gardening stalls, workshops and demonstrations, tai chi, face painting, roving entertainers and pony rides. A teddy bears' picnic will be held in the gardens on the same day. “We’re encouraging the community to get their thinking caps on now and enter the four competitions which will be judged on the day: the pop-up garden challenge, flower arrangement, cake decorating and student mosaic competitions.

• Competition entries and stallholder applications close on 30 September • wagga.nsw.gov.au/bg50 “Nominations close on 30 September and we’re hoping the community will enter and reveal their creative talents, focused around a garden and nature-related theme.” The pop-up garden challenge to create a 3x3m garden is open to landscape designers, garden businesses, and horticulture students. City gardens, edible gardens, sustainable gardens, container gardens, the only limitation is imagination. Florists, flower clubs, students or anyone with a talent for floral design are invited to enter their creative blooms in a floral

competition in two categories: flower arrangement and single bloom display. Cake decorators – well known for their flower-creation talents – have not been forgotten and are welcome to enter a garden or flower themed cake. Finally, Year 6 students are hard at work creating mosaics with a design based on Australia’s native flora and fauna. More entries are welcome for the competition with materials kindly donated by Bunnings. Do you have garden or nature-related products or services to sell, demonstrate or entertain? Applications for stallholders close on 30 September. “Spring gets busy, so pop the date in your diary for the Family Garden Festival – it’s going to be a fabulous day out,” Mr Pavitt said. wagga.nsw.gov.au/bg50

With nearly all of NSW impacted by drought, every drop counts. Ahead of a predicted dry spring and summer, Wagga Wagga City Council is pushing forward with a temporary method to redirect additional stormwater into Lake Albert from the Tatton Drain. A lack of regular rain caused bluegreen algae to persist in the lake for much of the year and with the dry weather likely to continue, Council wants to capture as much water as possible when it does rain. “It’s predicted to be a much drier spring and summer and we don’t want to miss the opportunity to capture what water we can,” Director Commercial Operations Caroline Angel said. “This construction is a temporary way to capture water from smaller rain events while we await funding for the Tatton Drain project, which is designed and estimated to cost $1M.”

Council has submitted a number of grant applications to fund the $1M Tatton Drain project and in the meantime has committed $52,000 for the temporary method. The temporary construction will allow a pond to be created during rain events, which can then help supplement the water level. At a recent meeting of the Lake Albert Improvement Committee, Council staff advised redirecting stormwater into the lake could add more nutrients to the existing water supply and increase the risk of bluegreen algae blooms. Community members acknowledged the issue, but considered the greater need was for water inflow to the lake. “We’ve held a number of positive discussions with businesses and community members to get to this point,” Ms Angel said. “We have some final approvals to go through, once they are finalised it will be a reasonably quick construction time.”

WAGGA WAGGA Wagga Wagga Week in Leavenworth this year had a special local touch not often seen in the United States’ Sister City. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM, his wife Jenny, Miss Wagga Wagga Zoe Martin and Community Princess Maddie Smith recently returned from a visit to Leavenworth in Kansas. It was only the third mayoral visit undertaken to the US city since Wagga Wagga and Leavenworth became Sister Cities in 1962. “The people of Leavenworth were very welcoming and they certainly enjoy the opportunity to celebrate Wagga Wagga Week and recognise our strong Sister City relationship which has been forged over more than 50 years,” Cr Conkey said. Cr Conkey said the Wagga Wagga delegation was given

at Wagga Wagga’s Australia Day events next year in the Victory Memorial Gardens. If you know of someone deserving of recognition visit wagga.nsw.gov.au/australiaday or contact 1300 292 442 for more information or to make a nomination. Nominations close Friday 23 November.

Cr Conkey had the

Works continue on Stage 1 of Main City Levee upgrade An additional section of the Wiradjuri bike and walking track will be built along the Flowerdale Lagoon as part of the finalisation of Stage 1 levee works. Senior Project Manager Darryl Woods said Stage 1 works to make good the Flowerdale section of the levee upgrade will commence next month after Council endorsed a contractor to finish the remaining section. “A 1.8m security fence will be erected to prevent access between the levee bank and businesses along Moorong St, as well as drainage works and topsoil seeding to revegetate the levee,” he said. “We’ll utilise 2000 tonne of high-grade organic matter recovered from the Livestock Marketing Centre which was graded with the flip screen purchased by Council this year and has met Environmental Protection Agency testing standards. “It’s a progressive step to repurpose a waste byproduct generated in one area of Council’s operations and achieve cost savings and environmental benefits through reuse.” Meanwhile, at Kooringal Road, construction continues on a new 800m section of levee bank running from the Monumental Cemetery to the disused railway line where it will join the existing levee bank. The existing levee - directly opposite the Exhibition Centre Netball Courts – is being reinforced, widened and a 130m concrete spillway built as
