Get ready for some side-splitting fun! Wagga Comedy Fest is back in 2022 and promises to deliver all the laughs, with some of the country’s best comedians taking to the stage over the Queen’s birthday long weekend, 9-11 June. The world-class line up features Anh Do, Joel Creasey, Nurse Georgie Carroll, Effie, Luke Heggie, ABC Radio’s Thank God It’s Friday, Michelle Brasier, Dane Simpson and the Riverina Comedy Club. The long weekend festival of laughs will kick off on Thursday night with the ever popular Anh Do, who returns to Wagga with his smash hit show The Happiest Refugee Live!! Based on his book of the same name, the stage show combines stand up comedy with real life stories in an amazing retelling of his story. “Anh Do is absolutely back by popular demand! He was part of Wagga’s first Comedy Fest in 2015 and is now one of our most requested shows, so we are delighted to see it coming back,” Civic Theatre Manager Carissa
Campbell said. “The laughs will continue to roll on Friday and Saturday night with the Winter Markets offering food, wine and live music outside the theatre and shows at staggered start times so you can catch as many shows as possible in one night. “This year we have deliberately left a little more time between shows so that audiences can easily make a full night of it. Catch a couple of shows, stay for dinner and a drink and hear some live music in the heated markets marquee.” On the Friday night, you can be part of the live broadcast of ABC’s popular drive show, Thank God It’s Friday, with Richard Glover. Nurse Georgie Carroll is also back in 2022 with Sister Flo 2.0; an hour of 100% unfiltered hospital banter. And it wouldn’t be the Wagga Comedy Fest without some homegrown comedic talent. This year the festival with feature Michelle Brasier with her critically acclaimed show Average Bear
and The Dane Simpson Variety Hour will be a fun mix of game show, meets talk show, meets musical extravaganza. Don’t use all your belly laughs too soon because on the Saturday Effie takes to the stage with her post lockdown show Better Out Than In, Joel Creasey keeps it real with Basic AF and Luke Heggie puts his hilarious sarcasm on show in Your Stupid. They say laughter is the best medicine and the Civic Theatre is delivering three days of laughter therapy this year to take advantage of its long weekend timing. “It is the perfect opportunity to redeem any unused Discover NSW vouchers before they expire and get $25 off your ticket price”, Ms Campbell said “So a ticket to see your favourite comedian just became very affordable!” You can check out all the acts and get your tickets at civictheatre.com.au/comedyfest

Carp can threaten native fish populations through competition, predation and the introduction of diseases. If you catch a carp whilst fishing, the animal should not be returned to the water but be humanely euthanised and disposed of appropriately.

Dobney Avenue and Pearson Street roadworks begin Night works got underway this week on the $5.6 million project to rehabilitate Dobney Avenue and Pearson Street, two of the busiest roads in the city’s sub-arterial network. Wagga Wagga City Council has contracted Fulton Hogan to carry out night works on Dobney Avenue (between Edward Street and the roundabout into Bunnings) and Pearson Street (between the roundabout at Edward Street/ Pearson Street and Cheshire Street) that includes the two roundabouts outside Bunnings. Council’s Director Infrastructure Services Warren Faulkner welcomed the start of works at the Sturt Highway end of Dobney Avenue on Wednesday night (20 April). “This is an overdue upgrade and I’m sure that the community will be happy with it when it’s all done,” Mr Faulkner said. “It will deliver a smoother and safer ride for road users and improve environmental factors such as noise reduction and the flow of surface water. “It will also have a thicker and stronger base course, which is important as both streets see a lot of commercial vehicle movements and are also routes approved for Higher Mass Limits (HML).” The project will involve milling out the existing road pavement and putting in a thick continuous layer of asphaltic concrete pavement along Dobney Avenue, then Pearson Street and finishing with the two roundabouts. The works are being carried out between 6pm and 6am to minimise disruptions for motorists and businesses. Traffic will be detoured via Pearson Street during the night works on Dobney Avenue and then switch around when the crews start working on Pearson Street. The roads will be reopened to traffic during the daytime.
The $5.6 million project is being 75 per cent funded by the NSW Government through its Fixing Local Roads program, with Wagga Wagga City Council providing the balance. Mr Faulkner said it has been a busy financial year for Council on the road works front. “We’ve had a good rebuild of our roads over the past nine months, with the completion Lake Albert Road, Kooringal Road, two sections of Red Hill Road, Stanley Street, Darlow Street, and Northcott Parade,” Mr Faulkner said. “Work is also underway on the Dunns Road project, with upgrading of the three kilometres of unsealed pavement to a sealed surface set to begin after Anzac Day. “We will continue to focus on improving our road network in the next financial year, with works on Inglewood Road, Copland Street, Old Narrandera Road, Gregadoo Road, Lord Baden Powell Drive, Lloyd Road, Nagle Street and Macleay Street among those slated for upgrades in the 2022/2023 financial year.” For more information about the Dobney-Pearson Rehabilitation, visit wagga.nsw.gov.au/projects
Do you have a great idea for a project or event for young people in Wagga Wagga but need some funding to turn it into a reality? Wagga Wagga City Council is providing a chance for young people aged 12 to 25 years in the Local Government Area (LGA) to launch an idea or host an event for other youth under its Annual Grants Program. Each financial year, Council makes funds available through this program for local non-profit community groups, individuals and small businesses who have a project, event or great idea for the local community. Applications for the 2022/23 grants are open now, with a total of $202,000 available across 10 categories: Community Programs and Projects; Recreational Facilities; Neighbourhood and Rural Villages; Rural Halls; Arts, Culture and Creative Industries; Local Heritage; Events; Natural Environment; Youth Led Initiatives; and Small Business. The program assists recipients to deliver quality programs, events and projects which support the community and enhance wellbeing and is part of Council’s commitment to developing a vibrant and diverse community. Council Youth Development Officer Alex Osgood said under the Youth Led Initiatives category, applicants can apply for grants between $500 to $3000 to plan, drive and deliver a project or event by young people, for young people within the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area. “If you are someone who says there is nothing on for young people in our community, now is your chance to fill that gap; the
sky is the limit!” Ms. Osgood said. “This is a great opportunity to develop skills, advocate for what young people want (and need) and create positive opportunities for others!” Some examples of eligible projects for the Youth Led Initiative funding category include: • New events featuring live music, art or performance events created by young people or featuring young people. • Delivering Teen Mental Health First Aid training. • Queer craft events. • Game board evenings. • Out-of-school-hours activities or events for young people in parks or open spaces across the local government area. • Projects that encourage young people from diverse backgrounds, including but not limited to those with lived experience with disability, Wiradjuri or First Nations and LGBTQI+, to get involved in their local community.
