STAY SAFE: Project Coordinator (Parks & Recreation) Peter Cook with the new signage at The Rocks, which includes other languages.
If you're heading to the 'bidgee, respect the river The Murrumbidgee River is a great place to cool off during summer in Wagga Wagga, but remember to respect the river. A number of actions to improve water safety were recently endorsed by Council after staff worked with Royal Lifesaving Australia to conduct an Aquatic Safety Assessment at Wagga Beach. Improved signage at The Rocks area has been installed this week, while a community awareness campaign is also underway on social media. Council will also develop an Inland Water Safety Management Plan to address safety in aquatic environments across the Local Government Area. Project Coordinator (Parks & Recreation) Peter
Cook said the new signage at The Rocks was larger and was designed to be more easily understood, particularly for non-English speakers. “The Murrumbidgee River is one of Wagga Wagga’s greatest assets, but it does have inherent risks,” he said. “The new signage includes six other languages – Arabic, Mandarin, Dinka, Burmese, Tagalog and Swahili. “The development of the Inland Water Safety Management Plan will also identify other projects, partnerships and strategies.” The community can learn more about inland water safety at www.wagga.nsw.gov.au/riversafety.
