Weekly information from us to you

HAVING A BLAST: Tarcutta Public School students show off their best air horn pose at the official launch of Arm Horn, the town’s new artwork. Below: Arm Horn artist Will Maguire and Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Rod Kendall also get into the spirit.

Honk! Artwork parks in village Tarcutta’s newest permanent residents were officially welcomed to town this week. Arm Horn, a steel sculpture featuring three children gesturing to passing truck drivers to give a honk on their truck horn, is the latest installation in the Wagga Works Public Art Plan. Tarcutta residents and Tarcutta Public School students were joined by Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Rod Kendall, Councillors and Council staff to officially launch and celebrate the town’s new artwork on Tuesday.

Arm Horn is the work of Australian blacksmith William Maguire and was inspired by the childhood memory of waving to truck drivers and getting them to honk their horn. “Arm Horn is three little kids doing the air-horn arm pull, and is a great sentiment to the town of Tarcutta because of its strong connection to the transport industry,” Mr Maguire said. “It hopefully brings back good memories for people who done the gesture as a kid themselves.” It’s hoped the artwork will create a new generation of air-horn arm pullers. “The artwork is mounted on three rocks. One rock is blank, where kids can come along and get a photo of

them doing the arm pull pose,” Mr Maguire said. “On the whole, it’s a light-hearted sculpture that people can interact with.” Tarcutta Progress Association worked with Council from the beginning to help bring the public art work to life. “We hope the artwork attracts more people to the village and make the most of what Tarcutta has to offer,” Tarcutta Progress Association president Craig Plum said. Arm Horn is located at the southern end of the Sydney Street road reserve, across from the Tarcutta truck driver’s memorial. The work is part of the Wagga Works Public Art Plan and cost $25,000.

CAMERA-LESS PRINT: James Farley, Fossils and Hyperobjects 2016, lumen print on silver gelatin paper.

PHOTOS CAPTURED WITHOUT A CAMERA Is a photographer still a photographer even when they capture photos without a camera? One Wagga artist is challenging this ideal in the exhibition Traces of Light and Shadow, which was officially opened in the E3 Art Space last night. Photographer James Farley has put down the camera to explore light and shadows in their rawest form. Mr Farley uses camera-less photography to showcase landscapes and an ecologically divide between human and nature.

Camera-less photography is the art of casting and manipulating shadows and light on photographic paper, or chemically treating the surface of the paper. What is left behind is a true original print, as no negative has been created. Traces of Light and Shadow presents part of Mr Farley’s ongoing research towards a practice-based PhD at Charles Sturt University. The exhibition will be on public display until Sunday 31 July.

UNIQUE WORKSHOP HITS THE RIGHT NOTE Are you a part-time Pavarotti? Opera Australia will be conducting a unique workshop to give you an insight into the world of an opera singer. The one-hour workshop will be held on Saturday 30 July in the lead up to Opera Australia’s production of The Marriage of Figaro at the Civic Theatre that evening. You’ll hear about the career development of cast members, learn a little about vocal control, snippets of behind the scenes news and how the production

The Marriage of Figaro was developed. Opera Australia was last in Wagga two years ago and ran a similar workshop, which proved popular. For those who prefer to enjoy the opera rather than take part, tickets for the production of The Marriage of Figaro are on sale now. Mozart’s brilliant opera follows the adventures of a household over one crazy day where masters lust over servants and servants outwit their masters. Award-winning

creative duo Michael Gow and Robert Kemp have created the new production, which features stunning period costumes and a clever set. A talented chamber orchestra and chorus of local children will accompany some of Opera Australia’s finest singers. To book tickets for the production, which is sung in English, visit civictheatre.com.au. For those interested in attending the workshop, contact the theatre on 6926 9688 to reserve your place as numbers are strictly limited.

NEW AUSSIE: Mayor Rod Kendall welcomes one of 15 new citizens during the July citizenship ceremony on Thursday.

FIFTEEN NEW AUSSIES WELCOMED AT CITIZENSHIP CEREMONY Fifteen people from four countries have become Australian citizens on Thursday afternoon. More than 4000 trees to be planted across Wagga area More than 4000 seedlings will be planted across the Wagga region as part of National Tree Day in 2016. Residents can get involved at the community event on 31 July at 211 East Bomen Road (off Byrnes Road) where 1400 seedlings will be planted. Twenty-seven schools and preschools across the city and villages will take part in Schools National Tree Day on 29 July, with 2680 seedlings and guards provided for free by the City of Wagga Wagga. “We’re looking for as many people as possible to come and get their hands dirty and help us at the community event,” Council’s Environmental Education Officer Alice Kent said. “By planting native species we aim to promote biodiversity, help manage urban salinity and contribute to a healthy

environment. “These new seedlings will provide habitat and food sources for local fauna, including squirrel gliders, superb parrots and possums.” While thousands of new seedlings will be great for the local environment, new research has found that those who lend a hand may get a boost to their health. The Adding Trees: A Prescription for Health, Happiness and Fulfilment report commissioned by Planet Ark discovered that spending time outside reduced your chance of developing a range of diseases. Just 10 minutes in the outdoors can reduce blood pressure, while getting out in nature can also triple your chances of a good night’s sleep. “If you want to beautify our city, help the environment and

also improve your wellbeing, then grab your gumboots and gardening gloves and take part in the community planting,” Miss Kent said. “We’ve got 1400 seedlings – including native trees, shrubs and groundcovers – to plant at our site on East Bomen Road. “Volunteers will be able to see the difference they’ve made to our city as they watch those seedlings grow bigger and bigger in the years to come.” Volunteers are asked to wear enclosed footwear, sun protection and bring along wet weather gear and a pair of gardening gloves. The community planting will start at 10am, followed by a free sausage sizzle. Volunteers will also receive a seedling to take home. For more information, contact Alice Kent on 1300 292 442.

Located at the Museum of the Riverina’s Botanic Gardens site, the Hall of Fame is undergoing its biggest change in almost a decade. and gives long-overdue recognition to more of Wagga’s female sporting legends.” The Hall of Fame is now in its 15th year and following this major overhaul, all 104 inductees will be represented. GET ADVICE ON HERITAGE PROPERTIES

WHAT A VIEW: Explorer Park will make the most of the steeper land contours, with a viewing platform and binoculars included.

Do you need heritage advice before you renovate your place? The first heritage adviser visit of the financial year will be 2 August and residents can make appointments now by contacting Council’s planning department on 1300 292 442. The City of Wagga Wagga has engaged the services of a heritage adviser for more than 20 years as a free service for the community. If you’re planning future work on

heritage items or work within the conservation area, the adviser can give advice on suitable materials and colours for restoring old buildings both commercial and residential, discuss appropriate styles and shapes of extensions and additions and work through other heritage issues. The service is achievable through the support of the Heritage Branch of the Office of the Environment and Heritage.

P L A N N I N G F O R PA R K L A N D S I N B O O R O O M A Boorooma’s dual parklands are ready to take shape with masterplans for Explorer Park and Lineal Park now complete. Both parklands take advantage of the suburbs’ natural landscape – it even features in each design. Onsite rocks will be used as seats under trees and additional native plants and grasses will be planted to complement the already established greenery in the area. Manager Environment and Recreation Services Mark Gardiner said the parklands will provide public access into the nature reserves and a range of recreational opportunities. “During the design phase Boorooma residents were asked to provide ideas and input into what they would like from the reserves,” Mr Gardiner said. “Council has taken these suggestions on board and designed two spaces that will offer a range of outdoor activities for residents, from bushwalking to picnicking, all while retaining the natural landscape of the area.”

Explorer Park will be three hectares, located in the eastern corner of Boorooma, and will make the most of the steeper land contours. The parks design includes an elevated viewing platform with binoculars, more than 800 metres of pathway through natural parkland, two play areas and a fenced dog off-leash area. Lineal Park will be a six-hectare, open space featuring natural wetland and woodland areas. Located alongside Amundsen Street, Lineal Park caters for family-friendly fun, featuring a playground and a sheltered barbecue area. Both parklands are part of Council’s longterm plan for Boorooma, which also includes streetscaping and footpaths. The combined total for the parklands is $1.2M, mostly funded through Section 94 contributions. Preliminary works, weeding and fencing to establish boundaries, has already started. Construction will kick off in August (weather permitting) and the completed parklands are expected to be ready by June 2017.
