TA-DA: Works and Playground Officer John Conlan with the almost-complete playground at Cox Park in Central Wagga. New and upgraded playgrounds are currently being installed around the city and villages. Inset: The now playground at Undurra Drive in Glenfield.
Council brings fun to neighbourhoods New and updated playgrounds are on their way across the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area. There are more than a hundred playgrounds across the city and villages, ranging from neighbourhood playgrounds to the adventure playgrounds at the Botanic Gardens and Apex Park. Work is almost complete on Cox Park at Kincaid Street and the playground on Undurra Drive in Glenfield, as well as three upgrades to village playgrounds.
“Wagga Wagga is a family-friendly city and the provision of great playgrounds is a key part of that and adds to the overall liveability of our city,” Council’s City Strategy Manager Tristan Kell said. “Council staff have been adding fun to neighbourhoods right across the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area over the past few weeks, with two new playgrounds in the city and upgrades to three village playgrounds. “We work closely with the local community near each playground to ensure it features the right mix equipment to create a great play space for children.” The $75,000 Cox Park playground includes
a swing set, nest swing, hanging rings, two slides, scramble net, obstacle bridge, climbing net, combination goal posts and more. Glenfield residents near Undurra Drive are enjoying a more than $100,000 new playground featuring see-saw, balance equipment, four in a row and noughts and crosses games, a large rope climbing structure, slide and obstacle bridge. Meanwhile, works at Paddy Osborne Park in Tarcutta will be finished soon. After discussing the village’s needs with the local progress association, a double flying fox cableway is being installed and the existing playground equipment is getting a fresh

coat of paint. Some playground equipment is being replaced at the Uranquinty Neighbourhood Centre after consulting with local user groups at the centre. Concrete works will be completed in the school holidays. Council is also working closely with the Mangoplah community and the MangoplahCookardinia United-Eastlakes Football & Netball Club on the playground at the sportsground. New equipment, fencing and footpaths are currently being installed. Council works to upgrade and build new playgrounds across the Local Government Area in line with its Playground Strategy 2016-2036.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Mayor Greg Conkey and Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack take a look at produce grown by members of the Multicultural Council of Wagga Wagga's community garden project.
New compostable liner delivery Households with a Council kerbside waste service will soon receive their first annual delivery of compostable liners. The compostable liners help residents sort their food waste in the kitchen for disposal in the green lid bin. Only certified compostable liners can be placed in the green lid bin. Liners will be delivered to households along with a new waste information booklet throughout March. For further information contact 1300 292 442.

Community garden and grant helps Fusion grow Growth was theme when Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM and Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack checked out the Multicultural Council of Wagga Wagga’s community garden this week. People from different backgrounds have been tending to the veggie patch and will use the local produce in their culinary creations at Wagga Wagga City Council’s annual Fusion festival later in the year. The Federal Government has provided $18,400 for Council to undertake a strategic plan to help the multicultural street festival continue to grow into the future. “Wagga Wagga City Council’s Fusion festival has grown to be one of our flagship events, drawing
more than 10,000 people from across NSW and interstate to the city each year,” Cr Conkey said. “This study will assist us in looking at the growth and sustainability of Fusion so it can continue to build on its success into the future.” The Federal Government funding comes after Riverina Water signed on in to support Fusion with $25,000 each year from 2018-20. “Fusion 2018 was a tremendous success, celebrating Wagga’s abundance of diverse cultures, bringing visitors to the region and with it greater turnover for local businesses,” Mr McCormack said. “We look forward to seeing how the study will work towards making the Fusion festival a permanent fixture of Wagga Wagga’s calendar.”
WAGGA PAYS RESPECTS TO CHRISTCHURCH VICTIMS The Wagga Wagga community gathered as one to honour and remember the victims of the recent Christchurch tragedy (pictured right). About 1000 people came together at a candlelight vigil at the Victory Memorial Gardens last Sunday night to pay their respects and to stand together in support of the city’s multicultural community. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM said the gathering was a solemn occasion which sent a unified message that “love conquers hate”. “It was a moving ceremony which gave people in our city the opportunity to gather and reflect on those recent tragic events which have impacted communities around the Ph: 1800 424 065

Take a look inside new stadium at open day Wagga Wagga residents watched on from a distance as the city’s new Multi-Purpose Stadium took shape and developed into a $9M premier sporting facility. Built in just under 12 months, Wagga Wagga City Council is now offering a unique opportunity to take a closer look at the stadium when the doors swing back on a community open day on Saturday 30 March at the Exhibition Centre. “We’re encouraging the community to come along and take a look inside this outstanding stadium which offers so much potential to the city,” Council Director
Commercial Operations Caroline Angel said. “This is a high-quality sporting, community and entertainment/event space in the heart of the city. Wagga can be proud of this project. “The venue opens up opportunities for competitions or events that attract visitors from across the state and country.” The stadium includes three timber-sprung indoor multi-sport courts; tiered seating for 667 spectators; accessible toilets, showers and change rooms; public toilets; three unisex change rooms; function space,
kitchen and servery; meeting rooms and office space; referee facilities and more. The facility was opened within budget estimates on 25 February this year. Council was able to use these contingency funds to add pathways and landscaping; road resurfacing; upgraded scoreboards and backboards to international standards; upgraded court lighting; curtains between courts; projectors to meeting rooms; additional furniture, fittings and fixtures; First Aid Room fit out and stocking; and motorised louvers to maximise the efficiency of the courts’ evaporative air-conditioning.
The project was funded by $4.5M from Council, $4.4M from the Federal Government’s National Stronger Regions Fund and $250,000 from Wagga Wagga Netball Association. Some key building statistics are: 33,490 hours worked, all injury-free, more than 130 tonnes of structural steel work and over 1300 cubic metres of concrete used. The open day on 30 March will run between 10am and noon. Those wishing to try out netball, basketball, volleyball and futsal on the courts should bring their sports shoes.

TREE REMOVAL AT COLLINS PARK
Residents and motorists are advised Fox Street will be closed between Forsyth and Tompson streets on Wednesday 27 March for the removal of a tree, weather permitting. The street will be closed between 7am to 4pm with traffic controls in place. The large sugar gum tree located at the edge of the garden in Collins Park is now in serious decline as a result of being struck by lightning. This has now caused the majority of the leaves to turn brown and fall off. The tree has now become a community safety concern. It has dropped limbs over the past few years, which have mostly fallen into the garden away from pedestrians. However, there is a basal cavity with a large amount of rot, which is a cause for concern.

HAVE YOUR SAY ON CLOSURE OF LANEWAY AT WALLA PLACE
The community will be asked for their feedback on a proposal to temporarily close a pedestrian laneway off Walla Place, Glenfield Park. Council has received customer requests from nearby residents to close off the laneway between 10 and 12 Walla
Place, citing issues with opportunistic crime, vandalism and antisocial activity. The proposal involves fencing off the laneway at the eastern end with Colourbond fencing to prevent pedestrian traffic usage. By using this method, the laneway can
easily be re-opened to the public if required. About 45 residences would be directly affected by closure of the laneway, along with members of the extended Glenfield Park community to access Glenfield Oval, Southcity Shopping Centre and other Council community
facilities. Consultation will take place from 23 March to 4 May, with the matter to be referred to the new Crime Prevention Working Group. Residents can submit their feedback via email to council@wagga.nsw.gov. au.

0447 231 080 | councillor.hayes@wagga.nsw.gov.au It was very disappointing for the community to hear we missed out once again on the final funding piece for the new PCYC centre as it was not approved for the third time through the Federal Government ‘Building Better Regions’ fund. With both Wagga Wagga City Council and the NSW Government allocating funds, it leaves only one level of government not supporting this project which would have a range of benefits to our community. Recently I got to visit the
current site and see the great work being done, but in an environment that is no longer suitable. PCYC say it best themselves in their mission: “We get young people active in life. We develop their skills, character and leadership. We reduce and prevent crime by and against young people.” The new facility will increase their potential to engage with the young people of Wagga, provide increased programing and increase the co-location opportunities of other services, all for the benefit of
our community. The $3M funding commitment that Wagga Wagga City Council approved is predicated on the whole project being delivered and not part of it, this is why it is so important for the final $10 million to be provided to ensure the project can happen. Outside of the good work that PCYC do, it will provide new facilities for those who utilise the current Bolton Park Stadium such as basketball and futsal. This is turn provides a unique opportunity in any redevelopment

I promised the Wagga Wagga Society of Model Engineers, who operate the Willans Hill Miniature Railway, that I would let more of our community know what they have been doing over the past 40-plus years. The Botanic Gardens are the gem of Wagga Wagga. Besides the zoo, well-equipped playgrounds and the spacious barbecue areas, there is another gem at the gardens and that, of course, is the miniature railway that is located near the
