Comedy Fest back bigger and better The Civic Theatre launched the 2021 Wagga Comedy Fest this week, with a lineup to rival its international festival counterparts. After a less than comedic 2020, the Wagga Comedy Fest will deliver all the laughs with its largest festival to date over the Queen’s birthday long weekend, 9 to 13 June. Tickets are now on sale for the festival, which is the biggest yet and features a mix of established and emerging comedians, along with a healthy serve of local talent. The line-up includes Wil Anderson, Umbilical Brothers, Geraldine Hickey, Nat’s What I Reckon, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival roadshow, ABC Radio’s Thank God It’s Friday, Nurse Georgie Carroll, Nath Valvo, Shad & Pete, and the Riverina Comedy Club. “Wil Anderson was one of the headliners in our 2017 Wagga Comedy Fest, when he famously got arrested on his flight here,” Civic Theatre
Manager Carissa Campbell said. “His show Wilegal was built around this event, so it is very fitting that he performs his show here, where it all began. “Another highlight will be Geraldine Hickey’s show What A Surprise, which has just this week been awarded the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Award for the Most Outstanding Show.” The popular Winter Markets will also be back, with hot food, drinks and free laughs on offer from Thursday to Saturday. They say laughter is the best medicine and the Civic Theatre is delivering five days of laughter therapy this year to take advantage of its long weekend timing. “We are expecting tickets to be snapped up quickly this year,” Ms Campbell said. “People just want to get out and have a good time, and with the Service NSW Discover vouchers available for redemption, a ticket to see your favourite comedian just became very COMEDY CAPER: Civic Theatre Manager Carissa Campbell and Artistic Director affordable! and comedian Dane Simpson launch the line-up headline acts and local Continued inside performers for the 2021 Wagga Comedy Fest.

GET ELEC TED: REGISTER FOR WORKSHOP WITH C AMPAIGN E XPERT
Are you running for Council in 2021? Discover how to plan and deliver an election campaign at Ruth McGowan OAM’s Get Elected workshop. The workshop, hosted by Wagga Wagga City Council on Tuesday 4 May 2021, is a practical session providing insight into the process for registering as a candidate and running a campaign. Ms McGowan is the author of Australia’s first national campaign guide, Get Elected, a step-by-step handbook to winning public office, which encourages women and diverse candidates to stand for politics at a local, state, and federal level. Copies of Get Elected are available at Wagga Wagga City Library and will also be available at the workshop. As a former mayor, councillor, and campaign coordinator, Ms McGowan believes local politics is a great way to make a lasting difference in your community. “Whether you want to drive prosperity for your local economy, ensure environmental sustainability, or help connect your community through vibrant engagement, getting elected to your council is the place where you can truly make a difference and leave a positive legacy,” Ms McGowan said. Council’s Manager Governance & Risk Ingrid Hensley said aspiring councillors would benefit from Ms McGowan’s insights. “You’ll be able to hear from someone who has been through the

Street appeal: winter plantings to grow the city’s tree canopy Winter is coming, marking the start of street tree planting season 2021 for Wagga Wagga City Council. In preparation, information flyers are being hand-delivered to those areas and houses who will be receiving either a new or replacement street tree. Team Leader Parks Operations (Tree Maintenance) Andrew Oliver said the leaflets include which tree species is proposed for each street, advice on tree maintenance and outlines the financial benefits of having trees on your block. “This year we’ve taken a more proactive approach with putting out the flyers ahead of the planting season,” Mr Oliver said. “We really want to hear back from residents, particularly if they have any concerns about tree selection or location.” Council’s tree planning, management and maintenance team bases its tree species selection for new or replacement plantings on several factors, such as the size of the road verge, block size, the topography of the land, and soil profiles. The residential developments in Wagga Wagga’s northern

growth area, such as Gobbagombalin, are one of the key delivery areas for the tree planting pamphlets this year. “Council liaises with the developers out there to work on a strategy and they select the trees to improve the canopy cover and provide a corridor effect for the birds and other wildlife,” Mr Oliver said. “We try to create an avenue, so we will have a certain tree species to give good street appeal, which can increase the attractiveness and value of a property. “In consultation with Council, certain arrangements can be
made, regarding tree selection or the number of trees which a residence may require. This is to alleviate problems or hazards being caused." Council is expecting the trees from its first orders to arrive in the city in May. The feedback received from the community between now and then will be used to fine-tune it final order ahead of planting, which will start in June. DRAFT FLOOD MANAGEMENT STUDIES: LAST CHANCE TO HAVE YOUR SAY
Grab your chance to provide feedback on Council’s draft flood management studies, which close for submissions on Wednesday 5 May 2021. The studies, which consist of two comprehensive reports by flood-management experts GRC Hydro and WMAwater, focus on flood mitigation and risk management in Wagga Wagga and the villages of Uranquinty, Tarcutta and Ladysmith. The studies relate to overland water flow, such as flash flooding, rather than riverine flooding, which is the subject of a separate peer review. A series of one-on-one sessions were held last week, which saw representatives from GRC Hydro, WMAwater and Council meet with community members in Wagga Wagga, Tarcutta, Ladysmith and Uranquinty to discuss the reports and any concerns residents may have had about overland water flow in their area. Council’s Director Projects and Strategy Darren Raeck said the sessions were beneficial for all
The growing popularity of new Olympic sport 3x3 basketball is having an impact in Wagga Wagga with the court at Riverside set to undergo a major upgrade towards securing more events. Wagga Wagga City Councillors endorsed a partnership between Council and 3x3 Champions League Basketball (CLB) at their 12 April meeting which will see two new halfsized courts and improved surrounds constructed by the end of this year. The courts will be of Olympic Games standard and feature the Federation Internationale de Basketball Amateur (FIBA) approved rubber playing surface, meaning top league competitions can be brought to Wagga Wagga. The two new courts will be built in place of the full-size asphalt court. The region’s First Nations youth have also been engaged to participate in the recreational area’s transformation. Artworks created by professional artists Owen Lyons and Teisha Robinson will be reproduced on a vinyl wrap and feature prominently on a purpose-built shipping container to be used during competitions and for other purposes over the year. Mr Lyons and Ms Robinson worked extensively with local high school students discussing Wiradjuri symbols which reflect respect and unity in the community. Council’s Strategic Recreation Officer Peter Cook said the project is a positive for Wagga Wagga on many levels. “This is another example of Council partnering with a sporting organisation to achieve great results
for the city,” Mr Cook said. “The popularity of 3x3 is evident right here in Wagga since the first tournament was held in 2018. "Each year since then the competitions have grown and the inclusion of the sport in this year’s Tokyo Games has seen the cutdown version of regular basketball skyrocket in player numbers." CLB General Manager Matt Hollard praised Council’s commitment to the project and said Wagga Wagga was one of the fastest growing regional centres to embrace the fast-paced game. “The courts are state-of-the-art and specced with FIBA fully endorsed products such as the court surface and hoops so we’ll be playing in Wagga on the real thing, just like the Olympics,” Mr Hollard said. “One of the courts will be covered with a dome roof which means year-round use and that gives greater scope to develop the area as a community hub, not only for basketball but a host of other activities as well." Council’s Equity Project Manager Isobel MacCallum said the involvement of First Nations youth gave the project a community-wide feel. “The significance of the river and sport is a real social connection in this space,” Ms MacCallum said. “Having the artwork in place at the court continues a lifelong message to all of equity and respect in sport, in the community and with each other, all the time.” The courts are expected to be finished in December this year.

involved. “It was great to have our team available to answer questions, hear any concerns residents had, and be able to explain our flood mitigation plans in more detail,” Mr Raeck said. “I’d encourage anyone who missed out on a one-on-one
to register their interest for an online session with our team, and get their submissions in before the closing date. “We’ll use all the feedback we receive to help shape the final documents, which will go back to Council for proposed adoption.”

COUNCILLOR COLUMN
With the timeline to the Local Government elections running down to the 4th September this year I wanted to cover off on some of the areas in being a Councillor that may or may not come out in any workshops or discussions you may have if you are considering
nominating. Running up to the completion of my 21st year as a Councillor I have observed consistent factors in the workload of a Councillor and also in the personality traits of those who either nominate or who nominate and are successful in being elected. In any discussion I have with people, whether that is in a
group discussion, at an event or a one-on-one, my consistent message is that to be elected as a Councillor to represent your community is the ultimate community service you can perform. It also a very high honour indeed to be entrusted with representing and making decisions on behalf of your community. It all comes back to passion in serving
your community and ensuring consistency and truthfulness in your dealings with all concerned, no matter what the issue. No one Councillor can be an expert in all areas but due to the wide range of functional areas and decisions to be made it is incumbent on each Councillor to ensure that they obtain enough information and understand enough on all topics

to be fully informed when voting. Otherwise that responsibility the community has entrusted to you is not served as it should be. In regard to the ‘real’ workload as a Councillor, this can vary depending on the size of the Council but cuts across delegations to other groups, attendance at workshops, attendance at meetings, representation at
events and the huge hidden item, that being background research and reading of papers prior to meetings. This is a consistent observation from first-time elected Councillors. The reality of the workload and reading always exceeds the expectations they had prior to election. I cannot speak for all Councillors, but I am more than happy if anyone intending to

Australian alternative pop singer-songwriter Odette will be unleashing her soulful voice and worldly-wise, poetic lyrics in the city this June in support of the Wagga Women’s Health Centre, courtesy of theDVproject:2650. The performance will showcase the inimitable style that has seen Odette thrive in both the Australian and international music scenes, and forms part of the nation-wide tour for her latest album, Herald. A triumphant follow-up to her highly acclaimed debut record To A Stranger, Herald plays like a coming-of-age drama minus the happy Hollywood ending, running the gamut from love, heartbreak and grief, to anger, self-analysis and accountability. “Transitioning from adolescence into adulthood is really hard”, Odette said. “No one gives you the tools, you know?” Local fans can look forward to hearing her bold new singles live, including Feverbreak, Dwell, Amends and Herald, with all ticket sale proceeds going to the Wagga Women’s Health Centre, courtesy of Wagga Wagga City Council. Director Community Janice Summerhayes said Council’s Equity team, currently delivering theDVproject:2650 three year funded project, which aims to increase the region’s support for gender equality and respect, approached Odette to include Wagga Wagga in her national tour. “Odette is an incredibly talented songwriter and performer, and her powerful, honest lyrics resonate with so many people,” Ms Summerhayes said.
