ON POINT: Council’s Environmental Health Coordinator Sharomi Dayanand with Needles the Echidna at Wednesday’s storytime session

Storytime teaches kids how to Be Sharps Smart Wagga Wagga City Council is spreading the message to local children on how to Be Sharps Smart, through interactive storytime sessions in schools, pre-schools and day care centres. On Wednesday Needles the Echidna and Council’s health officers attended Town &

Country Children’s Centre for an interactive storytime session, where Council’s illustrated Be Sharps Smart book was read out to the children. The book helps children to identify sharps in public spaces, educates them on the dangers of sharps while teaching them not to touch sharps. Each storytime session finishes with a question and answer session, which allows children to test their new knowledge and show their understanding of how to stay safe in the community. Council’s Environmental Health Coordinator Sharomi Dayanand said

children thoroughly enjoyed the storytime sessions. “This project has been a huge success and we look forward to delivering more storytime sessions across the region,” Ms Dayanand said. “Council is committed to a comprehensive sharps awareness campaign and aims to ensure residents of all ages can easily access information on how to correctly dispose of needles and syringes.” Council’s illustrated book Be Sharps Smart, which was partly funded by NSW Ministry of Health, was launched in September last year.

Over the past six months more than a hundred books have been made available in schools, pre-schools and day care centres. If children find a sharp object, they should take the following steps: • Step away! Leave it where it is and notify an adult straight away • Adults are encouraged to call Council or the NSW Needle Clean-Up Hotline on 1800 633 353. A trained person will then come and collect the object Read Council’s ‘Be Sharps Smart’ book and find out more information at wagga.nsw.gov.au/sharps.

COUNCILLOR COLUMN

Last week I met with Council’s Street Tree Management team. With a new policy about street trees going up for adoption by Council on Monday night, I thought it was important to get more of an understanding of how we go about managing them. When you stop and think

about it, street trees play such an important role in our community. On the nature strip, out the front of just about every house in the city and villages, you’ll see a street tree. Each one is maintained by Council for the first two years to allow them to establish. For the larger and faster growing trees, the crew head out and prune them on a regular basis. There are over 50,000 street trees in Wagga. That’s

a huge amount. They are all also regularly assessed to make sure they are safe and to keep an eye on their health. With so many trees of varying age and lifespans, the crew are always maintaining and replacing the trees. As well as the scheduled maintenance and plantings, the small crew respond to over 1500 community requests a year. You’ll generally find the trees varying from street to

councillor.keenan@wagga.nsw.gov.au

street and this is primarily to make sure there’s some diversity in case disease impacts a particular species. If we planted the same trees throughout the city and they were impacted by a pest or disease, the effects would be devastating to the urban canopy. I learnt a lot from the meeting and it made me think about the multitude of services and programs Council delivers. Street trees are just one of around

450 services that Council provides. I find it quite amazing that when you look closely at any service, there is just so much involved. It’s inevitable that not everyone will be happy all the time with Council and the particular service they request, but it is clear to me that both staff and Councillors are always looking to improve and build upon what is delivered to the community. We are, after all, a local organisation.

Our staff are residents, pay rates, raise families and contribute to the community in a multitude of ways and, like all of us, want the best for Wagga. I’m looking forward to learning more about the services we provide as a Council and how as a community we can work together for the benefit of residents and visitors.

Walking track works roll on along 'bidgee Work is well underway on the upgrade of the Wiradjuri walking track, with a new footpath now tracking along the banks of the Murrumbidgee River from the Wiradjuri Bridge to just past the Wiradjuri Reserve boat ramp. More than half of the track upgrade is now complete, with work set to continue towards the Marrambidya Wetland over the coming months. “We would like to thank pedestrians for their patience during this important upgrade,” Manager Project Operations Bruce Sheridan said. “The track needs to be closed in sections while the upgrade occurs, however, once complete pedestrians will be able to walk along a much improved designated footpath that links the Wiradjuri Reserve

to the levee banks and Wagga Beach.” The new footpaths are 1.8m wide, made from decomposed granite with a timber edging and feature handrails along some sections. In the coming weeks the next stage of the track upgrade will commence from the end of the Wiradjuri Reserve access road heading towards the Marrambidya Wetland. Track closures will be in place while this next stage of the upgrade occurs and the Wiradjuri walking track will not be able to be accessed from the Marrambidya Wetland. This stage is expected to be completed by the end of April, weather permitting. Signs will be in place to inform pedestrians of the track ON TRACK: Works on the Wiradjuri Walking Track are progressing, with more than half of the works complete. closures.

weekly MOWING

R E P O R T

All parks, reserves and open space areas are programmed to receive one grass cut approximately once every six weeks as part of Council’s seasonal mowing program. The mowing teams will be operating in the following suburbs

this week: • North: CBD followed by Estella • East: Forest Hill followed by Lake Albert • West: Lloyd followed by Bourkelands • Roadside: Southern region • Village: Brucedale

JOINT EFFORT: Council and Menshed Wagga are teaming up to beautify the CBD.

MENSHED WAGG A IMPRE S SE S WI T H F URNI T URE WORK S Street furniture throughout the CBD is being spruced up thanks to the Menshed Wagga. Wagga Wagga City Council enlisted the services of the local men’s shed to help with routine maintenance of the furniture through Baylis and Fitzmaurice streets. Council staff have been removing the furniture from the main street in stages and transporting it to the men’s shed. The first of the finished

pieces were collected on 9 February to be reinstalled in the CBD. “Previously we completed the annual maintenance ourselves, but this year we are partnering with Menshed Wagga,” Council’s Supervisor Wearing Operations Lee Shoemark said. “The meticulous and skilled team from Menshed Wagga have been hard at work and at a recent progress inspection we were more than happy with

the standard of the work and turnaround time. “The partnership has been so successful, we’re currently talking about expanding it to include the bin surrounds.” The team at Menshed Wagga have been stripping the timber slats from the frames, sanding the merbau, recoating in varnish, replacing any damaged slats, removing graffiti and undertaking other repairs as required.

DIY FUN: Lana, 10, with her very own video game.

KIDS TO MAKE THEIR OWN V I DEO G A M E S AT CODI N G CL A SS Instead of playing video games all Saturday, let your children become computer game designers instead. The Museum of the Riverina is offering a one-off opportunity to give local children access to a course rarely offered in regional areas. In a one-day Codespace Kids Coding Workshop on Saturday 3 March, kids will learn how to create a basic video game, which they can take home at the end of the day to play, further develop and share with friends. Local 10-year-old Lana has taken part in a similar workshop in the past and finished the day with her very

own game. “What I like is that my dad has been playing video games for over 30 years but he has never made one like I have,” she said. “It was fun and once you were finished you knew you actually made a game. “I think kids learning coding could be helpful if they wanted to become an app designer or something like that. “Any kid can learn to code if they want to.” The Codespace Kids Coding Workshop is aimed at children aged between eight and 14 at a subsidised cost of $45, which includes lunch. Museum Education and Public Programs Officer Tim Kurylowicz

said spaces were limited and urged parents to sign their kids up as soon as possible. “Kids will learn to be creators of technology, not just consumers of it while they develop their problem solving and critical thinking skills – skills that will help them in any career in the future,” he said. “They will learn how to create scenes, create

players from sprites and learn how to code them to move, learn how to create coins, spikes and more.” The workshop will take place from 10am to 4pm at Wagga Wagga City Council’s Bob Osborne Skills Centre on Fernleigh Road on Saturday 3 March. For more information and bookings, visit museumriverina.com. au/codespace.

Charlie, Council’s yellow community engagement truck, will be hitting the road in March and April, visiting all nine villages, followed by five Wagga suburbs. Throughout 2017, Charlie visited 40 locations across the Local Government Area and was visited by 685 community members. Charlie brings Council staff out into the community, and is an opportunity for you to drop in to speak to staff about Council services and projects, lodge a request, ask questions and a town planner will be on board to provide initial advice on planning matters. Staff will also be on hand to discuss the new kerbside waste service, set to start on 2 April. Resident of Currawarna, Barbara Johnston, is looking forward to Charlie visiting her village this autumn. “If residents and ratepayers have any issues or concerns, Charlie is a just great way to meet personally with Council staff and explain just what your problem is,” Ms Johnston said. “We appreciate that the Charlie truck continues to come to our area.” This year, Charlie visits will be grouped together to occur in autumn

and spring, so that the truck is out and about in the city’s finest weather. If you see Charlie in one of the villages, drop in anytime between 4pm and 7pm to chat to Council staff. To view the full schedule of visits and to find out more about Charlie visit wagga.nsw.gov.au/charlie or call 1300 292 442. The city’s nine villages will be visited on the following dates: Monday 5 March Oura 4-7pm Tuesday 6 March Currawarna 4-7pm Wednesday 7 March Ladysmith 4-7pm Monday 12 March 4-7pm Humula Tuesday 13 March Uranquinty 4-7pm Wednesday 14 March Mangoplah 4-7pm Monday 19 March Collingullie 4-7pm Tuesday 20 March Galore 4-7pm Thursday 22 March Tarcutta 4-7pm

service desk. Residents can use the kiosk to pay rates and other charges, track development applications, lodge customer requests, submit applications and view a range of Council documents and maps. “Council is continually looking at ways to make

it easier for residents to interact with Council, in particular through accessible technology,” Director Finance Natalie Te Pohe said. “We look forward to receiving feedback from residents on how we can continue to improve the customer service experience.”
