shopping precincts and encourage people to shop locally. Going beyond a traditional window display, the competition calls on businesses to create a sense of Christmas inside the store. “Christmas is a special time of year, full of festive songs, favourite foods, time with family and friends and long-held traditions,” Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM said. “It’s a unique experience for all ages and A new Christmas store display competition we are asking local businesses to bring that with $8000 in cash prizes will kick off this joy and excitement into their stores this December in the hopes festive cheer Christmas. will flow through the CBD and other
“Along with creating a festive atmosphere throughout the city, the competition will encourage people to shop locally this December.” The competition has four categories: • Best store and window display: $3000 • Festive experience awards (businesses that not only look appealing, but also create the most festive experience for their customers): $2500 • People’s choice award: $1500 • Wagga Christmas award (best display with a local theme): $1000 To enter the competition, a photo of
a local business’ store display must be uploaded to Instagram using the hashtag #waggachristmas2018, with the business identified in the post. Entries for judging will close on 16 December at 5pm. The people’s choice voting will be open until 18 December at 5pm and will go to the store display with the most photos uploaded to Instagram with the hashtag from unique accounts. The winners will be announced on Thursday, 20 December. For more information and terms and conditions visit the website. wagga.nsw.gov.au/christmas

UPGRADES UNDERWAY AT MCDONALD'S PARK From Front Page “The works will further improve the facility for rugby league and other sports locally, especially by providing a female change room,” Council’s Strategic Asset Planner (Parks & Recreation) Ben Creighton said. “The spectator seating is being extended to the north and south of the main grandstand seating to bring the total seating to more than 660. “The works are on schedule to be completed in time for the 4 May NRL clash between the Raiders and Panthers.” Wagga Wagga Rugby League is coordinating the projects worth in excess of $400,000, which will also move the canteens on the eastern side further back to the fence to increase spectator capacity
and useability. “We’re very excited,” Wagga Wagga Rugby League Chairman Warren Barclay said. “For the last 10 years we’ve been building the ground up to what you see today. “This ground is maintained by Wagga Wagga City Council and it’s maintained at a fantastic level. “We’re keen to keep developing McDonald’s Park as the best ground for rugby league and we’ll make sure it’s in Mickey Mouse condition for anyone who wants to use it like rugby union and soccer.” The works are scheduled to be completed in March 2019, weather permitting. Tickets for the Raiders-Panthers game will go on sale at 9am, Thursday 29 November at www.raiders.com.au.

EROSION CONTROL: Another section of the Lake Albert shoreline is currently being worked on following works at another part of the lake in 2017.
SHORELINE WORKS AT LAKE ALBERT
Significant work to improve another section of the Lake Albert shoreline is underway with rocks and sandbags taking shape along the water’s edge. Wagga Wagga City Council's works aim to address erosion and greatly improve the aesthetics and safety of the eastern shoreline. The project includes: • Removing existing concrete walls and shoreline along about 135 metres. • Construct new walls from a combination of Elcorock sand bags (or similar) and rocks to reduce erosion, improve aesthetics and access to Lake Albert.
• A cove will be installed to provide a haven for users to sit and also provide a safe area for children to play. • Boat tie up points will be installed along the shoreline. The remediation project, adjacent to Eastlake Drive and north of the public boat ramp, is part of the NSW Government’s Boating Now Program – Round 2 funding to improve boating access to waterways in NSW. Stage 1 shoreline remediation at Lake Albert was completed in 2017. The project is expected to take five weeks, weather permitting. Pedestrian access around the lake walking track is not affected by the works.
Turn your library fines into food this Christmas
This week we have a special treat – one of the magical kind! See, we had a little family stop by, they got lost down diagonalley and they are keen to find their new furever homes. You may have seen them in a small film franchise known as Harry Potter! They are keen to curl up on your lap, clean all the scraps out of your used caldrons and be a loyal friend. Please, meet the Weasleys! We have: Mrs Weasley (the mumma bear), Bill (the cool one),
Ph: 6971 4651
Charlie (the fierce one), Fred and George (the cheeky twins), and Ron (the kind one). Are you ready to start your magical journey with a Weasley? Mrs Weasley (mum, $231.50) and the kittens ($201.50 each) can be adopted from the Glenfield Road Animal Shelter. The price includes desexing, microchip, lifetime registration, vaccination, worming and ID tag. GRAS is open from 1pm to 4.15pm, Monday to Saturday, and can be contacted on 6971 4651.

Want to be in Santa’s good books this Christmas? Returning for 2018, Food for Fines is Wagga Wagga City Library’s way of gifting its members the chance to erase any fines they may have accumulated for overdue library items throughout the year. All members need to do is donate non-perishable food items, and their fines will disappear just like Santa Claus back up the chimney. The Christmas campaign, now in its 19th year, will help stock up the Salvation Army’s pantry during the busy holiday season.
“Even if you don’t have any library fines, you can still come in and make a donation to this important cause,” Wagga Wagga City Library Manager Claire Campbell said. “Your contribution will support the Salvation Army’s hard work and ensure everyone in our community can have a merry Christmas. “Tinned meals, pasta, beans, cereals and recipe bases are really helpful items. Just make sure your donation is non-perishable so it can be distributed when it is needed most, which is often just after Christmas when the Salvation
Army’s stocks are low.” The program is also Wagga Wagga City Council’s way of giving back to the community during the festive season by forfeiting the money from overdue fees. The community can make donations as part of the Food for Fines campaign from Monday 26 November until close of business on 22 December. With school holidays around the corner, keep up-to-date with all that’s happening at the Wagga Wagga City Library Facebook page or at wagga.nsw.gov.au/ library.
Heavy penalties apply. Leaving your load uncovered is dangerous. Cover it up, do it right. Report littering from vehicles

GARDEN WEDDING: Local couple Danielle and Ryan Jamieson, said “I do” in the Tree Chapel on 3 November under a brilliant blue sky.Photo: Bec Hyland
Say I Do with a view at the new-look Tree Chapel Five happy couples have tied the knot at the Tree Chapel since it re-opened in October after a major refurbishment project. One couple, Danielle and Ryan Jamieson, held their nuptials before family and friends in the chapel on 3 November under brilliant sunshine. The popular venue in Wagga Wagga’s Botanic Gardens received a makeover courtesy of Council’s Parks and Gardens team which installed prominent sandstone retaining walls, new paving and plantings of ornamental pears, maples, couch grass and flowering shrubs. Wagga Wagga City Council’s Manager Parks & Strategic Operations Henry Pavitt said the
chapel deserved a total refurbishment as it’s a special spot for weddings. “The Tree Chapel is one of several projects we completed this year to mark the 50th anniversary of the Botanic Gardens,” he said. “It really is a unique location in the gardens and we’ve done a lot of work to create an attractive space for special events that the community can enjoy.” You can book the Tree Chapel or any of Wagga Wagga City Council parks and ovals online at wagga.nsw.gov.au/councilbookings, or call the Booking Officer on 1300 292 442.

KIDS TAKE OVER THE MUSEUM There was a friendly invasion and take over of the Museum of the Riverina (MoR) in Wagga Wagga this week. Museum Takeover Day is a day when museums across the world hand over control to kids for the day. Takeover Day was in full swing in the city on Thursday.
The MoR has been working all year with a school group from Sturt Public School to curate an exhibition about local history. Inspired by the UK event of the same name that is run by the charity Kids in Museums, these ‘junior curators’ had their first taste of
installing an exhibition as they took over the MoR for the morning. The event involved children handling museum objects, placing them on display, organising their labels and deciding where their images should be hung.
