Partnership a boost for freight hub The owner of the biggest freight volume in the region, Visy Logistics, has partnered with Council on the proposed Riverina Intermodal Freight and Logistics (RiFL) Hub.

Visy Logistics (incorporating Visy Intermodal, Visy Contract Logistics, Visy Global Forwarding and Visy Global Logistics) was established in 2006 to integrate the internal and global supply chains of the Visy Group, a global leader in the packaging, paper, and resource recovery industries with more than 120 sites across Australasia. Since that time, Visy Logistics has grown in scale, scope and sophistication and now services the requirements of Visy Group and an extensive non-Visy Group Customer base, employing over

400 staff at 120 sites across Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom and Singapore. The parties have entered into a Heads of Agreement, which provides Council and Visy Logistics with a framework moving forward. “We are excited to enter into a partnership with a company that has the size and experience of Visy Logistics,” Council’s General Manager Peter Thompson said. “The RiFL Hub has the potential to become a transformative piece of infrastructure for Wagga Wagga

and the wider region. “It will provide a significant and long-lasting benefit to current and future businesses, as well as flow-on effects for the broader community. “The aim of the Public-Private Partnership is for Visy Logistics to fund the construction of the freight terminal and then operate the freight terminal on a long-term lease. “Visy Logistics is focused on investing in integrated logistics solutions and enablers, across the

complete supply chain, both locally and internationally,” Executive General Manager of Visy Logistics Sean Richards said. “Critical to our strategy in Australia is the appropriate and effective deployment of Visy Groups’ critical mass of freight for the purposes of developing an integrated and complementary network of road and rail infrastructure solutions across Australia; and offering these networks and their related services to the general market.” Continued inside

changing. One observation that I hear often is that the people of Wagga don’t necessarily like change, but once it happens we As someone who was born and raised in get on with it. I think Wagga, I have seen lots this might be close to of changes occur in the the mark. As a psychologist I city. am in the business of At times it may not change. Helping others always feel like it, but change behaviours, Wagga is constantly

change thoughts, and change how they feel. As a city Councillor, I’m in the business of navigating change as a representative of the community. There is significant parallels between change in the individual and change in the city and the challenges that present themselves.

Firstly, we can often feel that life was better back in the day or that our current way of doing something is the best or easiest way, even if it isn’t. Secondly, we can often feel that change is harder when it is caused by external factors rather than from within.

councillor.hayes@wagga.nsw.gov.au | 0447 231 080 Thirdly, change often creates an unknown outcome and it is easy to think of the worst case scenario or highlight the negatives. Overcoming these barriers to change on an individual scale can be difficult, even more so when bringing in a change that impacts the whole community. To

overcome the barriers mentioned previously, Council and community members can do some simple things. Talking to and listening to each other is key to understanding changes and make them work for many. Be part of the change if you can, help direct it and understand it.

BOTANIC GARDENS MARK 50TH ANNIVERSARY

From front page Cr Conkey said the Botanic Gardens are one of Wagga Wagga’s much-loved community spaces. “The anniversary is a chance to remember the tireless work that many people have contributed to make the Botanic Gardens the special place we enjoy today,” he said. “It is without doubt one of the jewels in Wagga Wagga’s crown and the 50th anniversary is the chance to thank everyone for their commitment.”

City of Wagga Wagga Mayoress Jenny Conkey presents Regional Manager of PCYC, Brett Somerville, with the proceeds raised at the successful Mayoress’ Charity Concert. The final figure of $30,500 was announced on Thursday with fundraising proceeds going to Wagga Wagga PCYC and its youth programs. Over 800 people enjoyed the two gala performances featuring 30 talented performers held on 28 July. Looking on at the presentation were (back, from left) Senior Sergeant David Cook, Steven Wait representing major sponsor Thomas Bros, Director Peter Cox, Musical Director David Wall, Master of Ceremonies Peter Casey and Senior Constable Troy Fisher.

Mr T.R.N. Lothian OBE, the President of the Australian Institute of Parks and Recreation and Director of the Adelaide Botanic Gardens, performed the official opening in 1968. Former and current staff of the gardens joined Wagga Wagga City Councillors and community members at the event held on Friday 24 August. logistics business and freight load to make the project viable. A strategic master plan for the 1800-hectare Bomen Business Park site was completed in 2009 and featured the proposed RiFL Hub and the roadworks required to make the project possible. Works began with the Eunony Bridge Road Deviation project in 2014-15 and were followed by the $35M Bomen Enabling Roads project, which was completed last year. Tenders have been received and are currently being assessed for the strengthening and widening of the Eunony Bridge.

This will be the final major road link for the project and allow Higher Mass Limit (HML) vehicles to access Bomen Business Park more easily. “Developing a high productivity freight route for Bomen Business Park has been a priority for Council for a number of years,” Mr Thompson said. “The opening of the Bomen Enabling Roads was a significant milestone and with the Eunony Bridge works moving forward, the pieces are falling into place as we continue to work closely with Visy Logistics on the proposed freight terminal.”

Uranquinty community to benefit from new skatepark Uranquinty residents can look forward to more community facilities as the planning and construction of a new skatepark gets underway. Wagga Wagga City Council’s Strategic Recreation Planner Ben Creighton said Uranquinty community members met with Council staff last week and finalised the community’s in-kind contribution to the project. “The project is a collaboration with the Uranquinty community and we are keen to see the skatepark finished by the end of the year,” he said. “Working in collaboration is vital to deliver a project that meets the needs of the community and we’ve agreed on a design based on the

available funding. “It will be located adjacent to the Uranquinty Oval and tennis courts, a convenient setting close to the village’s sporting facilities.” Paul Olsen, Station Manager at Origin Energy’s Uranquinty Power Station said the company was delighted to be able to chip in with a $20,000 contribution. “As a member of the local community we’re always keen to support initiatives that add to the well-being of Uranquinty’s residents and we believe this fantastic new facility will make an important contribution to that aim,” he said. The new skatepark will be similar to the one built at Forest Hill. It’s a modular style, which, when

compared to concrete skateparks, provide greater variety in design made from flexible and impactabsorbing materials, which can help reduce injuries. The project is a collaboration between the Uranquinty community who contributed in-kind assistance to construction, Wagga Wagga City Council contributed $50,000, Origin Energy contributed $20,000 and another $20,000 was received from the Federal Department of Industry Innovation & Science. It’s the seventh skatepark in the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area, with one at Forest Hill Oval, Chambers Park in Tolland, Henwood Park in Kooringal, Bolton Park in Central, Webb Park in Ashmont and William Street in North Wagga.

RO BOT S RU LE TH E C I V I C C E NTR E

Despite the cold weather last Saturday there was a great turn out of curious children and families at RoboDay, the final event in the week-long Riverina Science Festival. Library Manager Claire Campbell said the Civic Centre was buzzing and young imaginations were in overdrive as children and families explored the different robotthemed activities. “Robots paraded on the catwalk, children experienced virtual and augmented reality, tried the drones, experimented in the robot petting zoo, the 3D print room, the microscope nerve centre and got hands-on manipulating robots around an arena," she said. “We were thrilled with the response and would like to thank everyone who visited and LEVEE BANK: Wagga Wagga City Council’s Project Coordinator Graham Cox (left) and Senior Project Manager Darryl Woods review plans for the 800m section of new levee bank under construction near the Monumental Cemetery on Kooringal Road.

TIP SHOP BARGAINS

What’s new at the Tip Shop this week? If you’re looking for a Commodore ute canopy or three rolls of socked subsoil drainage pipe (pictured), then pop down to the shop to nab a bargain. The Tip Shop is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 8am to 4pm. Don’t forget you can drop off unwanted items in good condition at the shop for free instead of sending them to landfill.

Levee construction at Kooringal Road underway Heavy earthmoving equipment and hard hats are in full view from Kooringal Road this month as construction on a new 800m section of levee bank gets underway near the Monumental Cemetery. The new section, built with approximately 8000 cubic metres of soil, runs from the Monumental Cemetery to the disused railway line where it will join with the existing levee bank. Under the plans, the existing levee - directly opposite the Exhibition Centre netball courts - will be reinforced, widened and a 130m concrete spillway built. Head walls on either side of Copland Street are also under construction. In the event of a major flood additional temporary barriers are locked in to these strong structures to secure the levee. On completion the entire section of the levee bank will be topped with concrete and become

part of the proposed cycleway network in the city’s Active Travel Plan. The new section of levee is being constructed in accordance with Wagga Wagga’s 1 in 100year flood planning strategy. It is the final part of Stage 1 of the levee project and is scheduled for completion by December 2018. Tenders for Stage 2 of the Main City Levee upgrade close soon and will involve just under two kilometres of sheet piling, extension of the concrete retaining wall at Cadell Place and specialised work around the Hampden Bridge site to incorporate the area’s heritage. This next stage of work will extend from Narrung Street to Copland Street. For more information about the levee upgrade visit wagga.nsw.gov.au/levee.

Council to crack down on uncovered loads, fines to be issued Wagga residents are being urged to heed the “Don’t be a Tosser” message or face heavy fines in a blitz on uncovered loads between September and December. Wagga Wagga City Council will target uncovered loads on various days through the four-month period in the Gregadoo, Mitchell and

Ashford roads area. Updated signage along these access roads to Gregadoo Waste Management Centre are reminding visitors to the centre to cover their load. Council’s Environmental Education Officer Samantha Parsell advised that Council

rangers will be patrolling the area and heavy fines will be issued. Penalties for uncovered loads range from $250 to $1500. “Your load must be covered to prevent spilling, leaking or escaping. Waste is not just rubbish or unwanted items, it also includes excavated material, such

as dirt, sandstone, soil and vegetation,” Ms Parsell said. “Once litter has blown from vehicles and trailers it creates an untidy streetscape for the local residents and can cause damage to Council and private infrastructure. "Larger items can also cause serious roadside

accidents that can be fatal.” More than 160 cargo covers have been given away to tip users who didn’t have a cover at the Free Tip day in May. This provided users with the tools to do the right thing. Ms Parsell said residents can also report offences of

FAST-PACED GAME HEADING TO CIT Y Wagga Wagga basketball fans will experience the fastpaced urban style 3X3 game for the first time in the city later this year when a round of the National Summer Series is played. The Champions League Basketball 3X3 promotional van rolled into Wagga on Tuesday (August 21) to check out the Wagga Beach precinct before the three-day event between 16-18 November. The event is being supported by Wagga Wagga City Council. The Wagga Beach area will come alive with a party atmosphere of “three on three” sports action, music, food and family fun. Two mobile 3X3 half courts will be

set-up for the games. Council’s Strategic Recreation Officer Peter Cook said it was an opportunity for the city to secure a sporting event new to the area. “This three-day event is a major coup for the city,” Mr Cook said. “We’re expecting more than 1000 spectators. Many of them will be visitors to the city in addition to local residents. A sports event of this magnitude brings many economic and social benefits.” Wagga Heat captain Zac Maloney is excited about the sport’s future in Wagga and district and said 3X3’s highenergy style engages young players.

Decay and internal rot in the sugar gum tree has compromised its integrity. Work on removing the tree is scheduled to start on Thursday 30 August.
