A SPECIAL PROJECT: Council’s Lawn Cemetery & Crematorium team has brought fresh colour and an interactive garden space for families visiting the Forget-Me-Not Children’s Section. The transformation project features a mural wall, a new seating area, hopscotch court, chalkboard and a new garden bed, with everyone in the team having input into the design or carrying out the work. Team Leader Cemetery, Mick Gleeson (right), and Cemetery & Crematorium Assistant, Gary Glen, are pleased with the results of the team’s work, with the improvements being well-received by visitors to the garden. 'Special' plans for Bomen precinct Wagga Wagga’s Special Activation Precinct (SAP) will create up to 6000 new jobs, target 30-day planning approvals and could be Australia’s first hydrogen powered precinct.
NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro outlined the draft masterplan for Bomen’s SAP during a visit to ProWay Livestock Equipment this week. He said the draft plan sets the blueprint for a world-class business hub that will drive investment to the region. “Our plans for the Wagga Wagga
precinct include big ideas such as creating a circular economy – where one business’s waste becomes another’s resource – and Australia’s first green hydrogen hub, powered by sustainable energy,” Mr Barilaro said. “We want to create an employment hub with exceptional design to help Wagga Wagga grow while maintaining its unique, local appeal.” Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM said this week’s announcement was a significant milestone for the Bomen precinct and shows the State Government’s commitment to the region reaching its full potential. “The strategic importance Wagga Wagga has in NSW’s ongoing sustainability is evident here today. Our city is punching above its
weight for economic development, productivity and liveability,” Cr Conkey said. “The Special Activation Precinct will provide ongoing employment opportunities for current and future generations. “It will leverage from the Inland Rail and our Riverina Intermodal Freight and Logistics hub (RiFL) project to reduce freight costs for our regional producers and provide sustainable energy solutions, which provide certainty for business and future investors.” Cr Conkey acknowledged the Deputy Premier and Government for their commitment to the project, working with the community, business and Council to make this project a reality. Junior athletes tackle gender equality in sport Wagga Wagga City Council has partnered with the city’s Southern Sports Academy (SSA) to develop a suite of eLearning modules for their young athletes as part of the Your Local Clubs Education Program, focusing on the importance of respectful relationships and gender equality in sport. To address Wagga Wagga’s higher than average rates of domestic and family violence, the partnership further embeds the efforts of theDVproject:2650, which Council runs with project partners Wagga Women’s Health Centre. Southern Sports Academy Chief
Executive Officer, Mark Calverley said the training modules will empower conversations on the importance of gendered relations in sport and at the Academy. “We all know that sport is integral to the lives of many Australians, and is an important and influential social institution for many junior athletes,” Mr Calverley said. “Southern Sports Academy has a responsibility to the community and to our athletes to promote respectful relationships between boys and girls, women and men. “To change the attitudes and behaviours often ingrained in sport, we need to create programs, which provide learning
opportunities and skills that will not only benefit them in their sporting careers, but also in their personal development as community ambassadors.” Southern Sports Academy is recognised locally and state-wide as an industry leader in pre-elite sports development, where sport can use its influence to extend the principles of equality and fairness beyond the field. The suite of eLearning modules was developed to educate SSA athletes about respectful relationships, challenging set gender stereotypes and norms and teach them about safe bystander actions they could undertake.
Equity Project Manager, Maryna Bilousova is hopeful of the impact this training will provide to junior athletes, looking at where inequalities lie and how to effectively address them and call it out. “Sport can empower, motivate and inspire change on and off the field and in order to break the cycle of violence, it is important to educate the community’s youth, who are the next generation of leaders,” Ms Bilousova said. “The training modules will assist SSA athletes to recognise and callout inappropriate behaviour and make it easy for young men and women to make a difference.
“We know the voices and actions of our young men can be part of the wider solution, to challenge attitudes and every day sexism and stereotypes, which enable violence against girls and women to continue.” theDVproject:2650 and Council’s Equity and Respect team are made possible through NSW Government funding received by Wagga Women’s Health Centre in 2018 and is delivered by Wagga Wagga City Council. DR AFT MA STERPL AN FOR SAP
Continued from Page 1. “This partnership will deliver a world-class industrial precinct. We have delivered roads, technology, and now we’re finalising designs for the largest inland port on Inland Rail,” he said. “Wagga Wagga is surging ahead as a regional capital and the benefits of what is happening today will be enjoyed for decades to come.” The draft masterplan covers 4,506 hectares including the existing Bomen Business Park and will be on public exhibition for 56 days, instead of the usual 28-day period, to give people enough time to provide feedback. Target industries include renewables, sustainability
and recycling, advanced manufacturing, value-added agriculture, freight and logistics, which will benefit from fast-tracked planning approvals and access to the Inland Rail. Paul Gianniotis, Managing Director at ProWay, said the precinct will make it easier for his business to expand and innovate. “Saving time and money on planning approvals is a huge benefit for businesses like ours that want to invest more, try new ideas, live regionally and do business with the world.” The Wagga Wagga Special Activation Precinct draft masterplan is open for feedback until 15 September 2020 and can be accessed at planning.nsw.gov.au

Families visiting the Forget-Me-Not Children’s Section at Wagga City Council’s Lawn Cemetery & Crematorium now have a new garden and play area as the result of a special project undertaken by staff. The eight-month project involved the eastern side of the Forget-Me-Not Children’s Section being transformed from a row of old photinias to a colourful and interactive garden space. Team Leader Cemetery, Mick Gleeson, said the aim of the improvements was to make it a more attractive and functional area for everyone. “When we removed the photinias, which were all straggly and past their used-by-date, it gave us a blank slate to start afresh and do something nice,” Mr
Gleeson said. “We put in a fence and garden bed, as well as a new concrete path, a hopscotch court and somewhere to sit for the families who come and visit. “The fence also underwent a make-over from local artist Luke Vineberg. The team sat down and came
up with some ideas of what might look pretty, and once they’d voted on a design, Luke did a proof for us and came and spray-painted the fence.” Forget-me-not seeds have been planted in one of the garden beds, reflecting the name of the Children’s Section and the poem which
graces the monument near its main entry. Another new feature is a chalkboard which the team built themselves and put on the fence near the seating. Cemetery & Crematorium Assistant, Gary Glen, came up with the idea. “I thought it would be good to create something interactive for the kids because often the parent will come here with another child or children, so it gives those youngsters something to do,” Mr Glen said. “It’s been very popular with everyone writing or drawing on it when they visit.” The improvements have been wellreceived, much to the joy of the team. “Everyone had input into the design or carried out the works. We all wanted to be able to give the families a place that was full of colour and beauty, and would brighten things and cheer them up,” Mr Gleeson said. The project team included Mick Gleeson, Gary Glen, Paul Wilson, Scott Malsem, Susan Dolphin, Amanda Jones, Jake Milnes and the late Richard Edwards.

The first-stage upgrade of Wagga Wagga’s Harris Park has provided the city with a second top class rugby league and cricket facility with more improvements to come. Harris Park is now one of the city’s best suburban sports fields located in Turvey Park and will play a pivotal role in the city’s sports calendar during summer and winter events. Wagga Wagga City Council’s Strategic Asset Planner Ben Creighton said works on the first stage had brought the ground to the next level, and recognised the continued support of Wagga Rugby League in managing the project.
“The relationship between Council and Wagga Rugby League continues to bring dividends for the city and local sporting clubs and groups,” Mr Creighton said. “We have worked closely with WRL to complete many upgrades at McDonald’s Park at the Exhibition Centre and this is a similar arrangement. “The improvement works bring Harris Park to a new standard, not only for rugby league but also the local cricket association which utilises the ground.” Mr Creighton said improvements in Stage 1 of the project included the removal of a perimeter hedge and replacing the old
fencing, a new electronic scoreboard, new lighting towers, surface works on the main area, new cricket nets and a training area adjacent to the main field. He said future stages would include improvements to the dressing rooms and canteen. “The new scoreboard was provided through a $13K grant to Wagga Rugby League from Riverina Water, so this has been a real community effort to get a suburban ground which was looking a little tired, back up to a higher standard,” he said. Southcity Bulls president Matt Ward said the club was already seeing the benefits with the new season now
underway. “The lighting has given us more options for training and the ground itself is now at a better standard for first grade matches,” Mr Ward said. “We recognise that McDonald’s Park is the city’s premier facility but we’re more than happy to be given an opportunity to make these improvements and have a quality suburban ground available to rugby league and cricket. “It’s a win-win situation and Council has been proactive in making this happen and facilitating ground improvements that benefit the whole community.”
GREEN LIGHT FOR ‘END OF TRIP’ FACILITIES
Two facilities planned to enhance Wagga Wagga’s Active Travel cycleway network have been approved to proceed to the next stage. Wagga Wagga City Council recently awarded the contract for the design and construction of the two “end of trip” facilities to be located close to the CBD. They will be constructed at the Oasis Regional Aquatic Centre in Morgan Street and the Visitor Information Centre in Tarcutta Street. Council awarded the $297K project to Ladex Construction Group at its 29 June Ordinary Council Meeting. Project Manager Rupesh Shah said the
The Civic Theatre this week announced its plan for reopening, launching Re-Ignite, a program of live music, comedy, theatre and cabaret to round out 2020. Tickets are now on sale for the Re-Ignite season, which kicks off with the Groove Factorie on Saturday 8 August. Other performances will include award-winning Australian country music artist Fanny Lumsden, the Riverina Comedy Club, the Australian Army Band Kapooka, and the Riverina Conservatorium of Music. Peter Cox will also bring his new show ‘A Few Quiet Ales’ to the stage, and a new cabaret festival has been scheduled for September. Civic Theatre Manager Carissa Campbell said the live events and entertainment industry had been one of the hardest-hit as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. “A lot of these people would tell you they haven’t had gigs in months, so we are really pleased that within the rules, we can reopen with limited numbers” Ms Campbell said. “Re-Ignite is all about celebrating that the theatre is open for business and re-lighting our stage. It’s about supporting our local and national artists." That sentiment has been echoed by the artists, who are thrilled to have the opportunity to perform again in front of a live audience. “It’s great. This gig will be just our second for 2020. We were just saying to each other recently how we missed playing together,” The Groove Factorie’s Dale
Allison said. “This is a great initiative by the Civic Theatre, because the facility is big enough to spread the people out on stage and have a reasonable sized audience factoring in COVID-19 social distancing rules.” The Riverina Comedy Club will hold a show in August headlined by Australian comedian, Tahir, who is well-known his role in ‘Fat Pizza’, ‘Swift’ and ‘Street Smart’. “The Civic Theatre is a change for us venuewise and we are hoping we’ll be able to grow our audience and people will come along and have a good laugh,” Wagga comedian Dane Simpson said. The Theatre has introduced a comprehensive COVID Safe Plan, which includes capacity restrictions, physical distancing measures, the provision of hand sanitiser throughout the venue, high standards of cleanliness and hygiene protocols, and protective screens at the box office and bar. “It just means every time you book, between you and the next group there’ll be a couple of chairs and there’ll be less mingling in the foyer, but otherwise you can grab a drink, have a seat and enjoy the show” Ms Campbell said. You can find out more about the COVID Safe Plan on the Civic Theatre website civictheatre.com.au Details of the Re-Ignite performances and show tickets are available on the website or by calling the box office on 02 6926 9688.
