UPGRADE: Oasis Manager Maurice Eames and contractor Brant de Hennin look over the progress of the retiling project.

Demolition work to lift and remove 1700 square metres of floor tiles in the indoor pool area at the Oasis Regional Aquatic Centre was completed last week and the indoor pools re-opened to the public on Monday morning. “We’d like to thank to the community for their patience during the temporary closure, which enabled us to complete the demolition quickly and re-open the pools as scheduled,” Oasis Regional Aquatic Centre Maurice Eames said. “Floor tiling has started around the indoor pools and this is expected to be completed in September. “We appreciate the understanding of Oasis patrons while these works are underway. “Refurbishment of the accessible toilet and change room is complete and we were able to reopen those facilities on Monday. “This will be closely followed by the two family change rooms, which are also nearing completion after a complete re-vamp. “Tiling works, installation of new showers and toilets is underway in the male and female change rooms and these are expected to be completed in late June,” Mr Eames said. For more information about the works call the Oasis on 6926 9390.

Prevention approach to domestic violence Wagga Wagga City Council has applauded the decision of the NSW Government to become a member of Our Watch, as the region tackles its domestic and family violence problem. Our Watch is the national organisation working to prevent violence against women and their children. “This development is particularly positive for communities like ours where domestic

“There is a strong link between inequality, disrespect and domestic violence and we need to highlight the steps our community can take to challenge existing norms and attitudes towards women. “One of the key things we are doing is our My Story. Our Story. event on Wednesday 5 June at the Civic Theatre. “Having a keynote speaker with the calibre of Ray Martin talking about his experience of domestic violence as a child and then to address how we can prevent it happening is what the community really needs to hear. “Our panellists for the evening will start a conversation about being an influence for change.

“The aim is to encourage our community to speak up or show disapproval when they see disrespect towards women, and give practical tips they can use when they see casual sexism either at home, at work or in any social environment. “We’ve kept the ticket prices for this event at a very reasonable cost to allow all members of the public to attend. “Wagga Wagga is a vibrant regional city. We need solutions to changing current attitudes that mean that respectful relationships are part of our daily lives and reflect our vitality.” All proceeds from this event will support the Wagga Women’s Health Centre.

Wagga Wagga City Council is helping community groups with a can-do attitude turn their trash into cash. With the popularity of the Return and Earn container deposit scheme, Council’s environment team recently launched the Community Cash 4 Cans recycling trailer (CC4C). The trailer is available for community, sporting and school groups to use at local events and easily collect eligible drink

containers at local events. “Council has created the trailer to make it easy for the community to raise money, while making sure single-use drink containers are recycled and not going to landfill or ending up as litter,” Environmental Education Officer Sam Pascall said. “The trailer can hold between 2500 and 3000 cans and bottles, which can be worth hundreds of dollars for your local group or club.

From the completion of the Main City Levee Upgrade to work to build infrastructure in the northern growth suburbs, Wagga Wagga City Council’s draft budget for 2019/20 is focused on meeting the needs of a growing community. The draft combined Delivery Program and Operational Plan (DPOP) 2019/20, along with the draft Long Term Financial Plan 2019-2029 and draft Fees and Charges are on public exhibition,

Ray and our panellists will start the conversation about changing our community attitudes, social norms and stereotypes towards Domestic Family Violence.

“Local artist Rachel Viski has provided a bright and colourful, recycling-inspired design for the trailer, making it stand out and easy to spot events.” Any interested sporting, community and school groups wanting to use the CC4C trailer can simply book it online and arrange to pick it up. For more information, visit wagga.nsw. gov.au/cc4c. There is no cost for using the recycling trailer.

GIVING BACK: Language Café volunteer Di McCarthy (left) works with participant Tina Yang to improve her conversational English. Di is one of many volunteers across Council who are being celebrated as part of National Volunteer Week.

Volunteers in the spotlight at library's Language Cafe National Volunteer Week 2019 is from 20 to 26 May and in celebration, we would like to say thank you to those individuals who volunteer their time to provide an invaluable contribution to the community. Volunteers at Council are fundamental to the successful provision of our much-needed services and programs across a range of areas such as Wagga Wagga City Library’s Language Café. Established in 2017, the library’s Language Café is an English Conversation program designed to address a range of issues for community members new to Australia to help them learn English and meet new people. Three mornings per week, trained volunteers work with groups and individuals to improve their spoken English. One day one there were 13 participants, nine language backgrounds and five volunteers. Today, there are 72 trained volunteers and more than 300

participants each term from 30 countries of origin. Language Café volunteer Di McCarthy said she feels enriched by the experience and has a greater awareness of the many vibrant cultures that make up Wagga Wagga. “You can’t get more excitement that being in a room full of people from all around the world,” Di said. “Time flies when you’re enjoying what you’re doing, for me it was the perfect formula of the love of people, language and sharing the language. “Programs like this are integral to the balance in a city like Wagga, helping blend newcomers into our community. The more we help them and make them feel welcome, the better citizens they are ultimately going to be. “You do feel like you are doing something that benefits the city and everybody in it.” Library Manager Claire Campbell said the Language Café brings people together from

different cultural backgrounds to foster lifelong learning, celebrate new friendships, and to provide access to programming and collections that celebrate cultural diversity in the community. “Three times a week, volunteers help participants practice their English through conversation in our Community Learning Space,” she said. “Wagga Wagga has a growing Cultural and Linguistic Diverse (CALD) community and our participants have come from more than 30 countries of origin such as Syria, Iraq, Iran, Korea, China, India, Japan, Sri Lanka, Burma, Spain, Afghanistan, Mexico, Pakistan, Indonesia and Columbia.” Council welcomes volunteer applications for a wide variety of organisational areas, events and initiatives all year round. For more information on areas where you can volunteer and how to apply visit wagga.nsw.gov.au/jobs and navigate to the volunteering section.

Expressions of interest to lease the former café/restaurant site in Wagga Wagga’s iconic Botanic Gardens close on 31 May. The building is in the heart of the gardens, which is a popular spot with local families and visitors. It comprises three separate areas and may be leased separately or as a whole: • A coffee shop/kiosk with outdoor seating

area overlooking the children’s playground • A function area with wet bar, cool room, toilets, baby change amenities, office, staff bathroom, private courtyard • A kitchen with cool room, freezer, benches, grease trap and exhaust hood. This could be leased in conjunction with the function area or coffee shop The Botanic

Gardens feature a range of active spaces, an outdoor entertainment area, outdoor wedding areas, the Wagga Wagga Society of Model Engineers’ miniature railway and the zoo, which has a mix of native and farmyard animals along with a free-flight aviary. To find out more about the leasing opportunity, attend an open inspection or visit tenderlink.com/ wagga.

DRAFT CODE OF MEETING PRACTICE ON EXHIBITION

Council is calling for the community’s feedback on the draft Code of Meeting Practice. The Code covers items such as how members of the community can speak at a Council meeting, modes of address and rules of debate. In general, it deals with how Council goes about making decisions and the behaviour expected during meetings. It also contains the Order of Business for Council meetings and community feedback is sought in relation to the continued inclusion, or otherwise, of the current Prayer. A clear and transparent Code of Meeting Practice, that meets legislative obligations, ensures the community is able to effectively

engage with Council at Council meetings. To access the draft Code of Meeting Practice and make a submission, visit wagga.nsw.gov. au/public. Council can only amend or supplement non-mandatory provisions in the Code and any additional provisions must be consistent with the mandatory provisions (black font) outlined in the Model Code. The non-mandatory provisions are shown in red font and provisions that are not in the Model Code but are recommended for adoption to ensure improved governance practices are shown in blue font. Submissions can be made until 5pm, 10 June.

COUNCILLOR COLUMN

The Wagga airport is one of the most important pieces of infrastructure for our city. From business to tourism to health services, it provides a valuable role for

the community and beyond. Council, backed by the community, deem the airport to be a business unit and it is expected to not only generate funds to break even, but ideally make a profit that can be reinvested into the airport. There is a significant

challenge for this to happen. The airport isn’t owned by Council, but rather it is leased from the Department of Defence. In numerous other places the airport has been sold to local councils for $1. In Wagga, the lease costs the community hundreds of thousands of dollars per year.

What is more absurd is that any upgrades or improvements made, which are often paid for by Council (ie: ratepayers), leads to an increase in the lease. Imagine renting a home where you are required to make all the improvements, and when you do your rent increases.

FEEDBACK NEEDED ON RIVERSIDE CONCEPT DESIGNS

Share your feedback on the concept designs for the Riverside Stage 2 project by 1 June. The $6.7M works for Stage 2 will see the entire precinct from the beach carpark through to St Michael’s Oval rejuvenated, building on the success of the $1M Stage 1 works completed in 2014-15. The key items identified for Riverside Stage 2 are: • Car parking upgrade: Trees for shade, CCTV and lighting • Container food and beverage outlets: modified containers to provide flexible food and beverage opportunities that are removable during flood • Event spaces: Large, medium and small spaces to cater for a wide range of events, which can be used individually or combined for major events • Playground and water play: A large ‘destination’ playground with water play elements that will be designed to ensure minimum impact during flood You can see the plans and share your thoughts online at wagga.nsw.gov.au/riverside, or email your feedback to riverside@wagga.nsw.gov.au, deliver it to the Civic Centre or post it to PO Box 20, Wagga Wagga NSW 2650.

Council’s draft Combined Delivery Program and Operational Plan 2019/2020, draft Long Term Financial Plan 2019/2029 and draft 2019/2020 are now on public exhibition. These document provide details of the Council’s proposed budgets, services and projects for delivery. Council invites submission on the draft documents. Inspection Venue: The draft plans are available for review at Wagga Wagga City Council, Cnr Baylis & Morrow St, Wagga Wagga within the exhibition period. The draft plans can also be accessed from Council’s Wagga View website www. waggaview.com.au. relocating if the airport was to be handed over, this is despite the millions of dollars promised to the RAAF Base for upgrades. The RAAF’s contribution to our area is immeasurable, though the notion that the only reason they remain in Wagga is an airport lease is either incredibly concerning,

or just not believable. Regardless, we need a better deal, but without the local Federal Member backing the community, we will not have a great deal of luck and this is costing everyone.
