WORKS UNDERWAY: Stage 1 works have so far included tree and top soil removal at the Flowerdale section in preparation for reshaping and reconstruction of the levee.
First stage of levee upgrade continues Preliminary works to raise and strengthen Wagga Wagga’s Main City Levee are well underway. Stage 1 of the upgrade works to increase the Main City Levee to a 1 in 100 year level of protection started in October at Flowerdale Lagoon. Works so far have included tree and top soil removal at the Flowerdale section and a total of 48,000 tonnes of clay has been stockpiled on site in preparation for reshaping and reconstruction of the levee and construction of a new concrete spillway.
“Residents would have seen some truck and machinery movements along the levee in the past two months,” Senior Project Manager Darryl Woods said. “This work will continue in the lead up to Christmas and in the new year sections of one of the new concrete spillways will start to take shape. “Residents are also reminded to be mindful of extra truck movements in and around the site at Moorong Street and the Olympic Highway while the works are being carried out. “The Wiradjuri Walking Track at Flowerdale is also closed until the new year.” Some works will also start next week

at the Kooringal Road/Copland Street end of the levee, which will also include increased truck movements in the area. Stage 1 of the Main City Levee upgrade is being delivered in two stages, from Flowerdale to Wiradjuri Bridge and from Copland Street working south to the Kooringal Road Monumental Cemetery. Both sections consist of embankment levee earthen works and the construction of two concrete spillways, one at Flowerdale and the other upstream from Copland Street. Stage 1 is expected to be complete by April 2018. Keep updated on the levee works at www.wagga.nsw.gov.au/levee.
Ever wanted to see what 13,800 twinkling fairy lights looks like? Then be sure to head down to the Victory Memorial Garden on Thursday 30 November from 8pm for the official switching on of a new light installation just in time for Christmas. Flicking the switch will also officially usher in the festive season across the city, which includes Christmas-themed flags, footpath decals and projections on the Civic Centre, along with other events such as carols, a lit-up Christmas village and New Year’s Eve fireworks. “While we are switching on these new lights as part of our community’s Christmas celebrations, they will be used year-round to add something special to the cityscape along with contributing to the overall sense of safety for park users,” Wagga Wagga City Council’s Director Community Janice Summerhayes said. “This project is a gift that will keep on giving to the community long after the festive season. “The lights feature 13,800 LED goldencoloured globes, winding 610 meters around the tree and stretching 20 metres high.” The lights, flags and decals replace the city’s older decorations, which were decommissioned due to wear and tear. The lights will also create a sense of nostalgia for some Wagga Wagga residents who may recall lights adorning the tallest cypress pine in the Victory Memorial Gardens in the past. “The tree lights add a new look and feel to the Civic Precinct, providing a central place for the community to come together during the festive season and at other events throughout the year,” Ms Summerhayes said. “Reinstating the much-loved lights in the pine tree in the Victory Memorial Gardens is the first stage of this lighting project, with the opportunity to light more trees in the area depending on budget available in the future” The lights have been fitted with bird deterrent devices and are heavy duty to withstand weather conditions. The cost of the project was $20,000.

Library's Language Cafe recognised at awards Wagga Wagga City Library’s Language Café has been recognised for its great work, receiving a Highly Commended Multicultural Services Award at the NSW Public Libraries Association Annual Conference held in Sydney this week. The Language Café commenced in July this year, with four free sessions held each week. The project provides the opportunity for people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds to drop in to the library and have conversations with volunteer tutors in an informal and friendly environment in order to improve their conversational English. Council’s Director Community Janice Summerhayes says the Language Café has been a resounding success. “Wagga Wagga is a Refugee Welcome City and the Language Café program provides a great opportunity to celebrate our community’s cultural diversity, while promoting the Library’s services to CALD community members,” Ms Summerhayes said. “We were overwhelmed with volunteers who clearly wish to engage in a meaningful way with the CALD community, and at the first Language Café session we had 13 CALD

Progressive partnership to promote Wagga Wagga The productive relationship Council has with Charles Sturt University and TAFE NSW will be strengthened under a revised Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The MoU outlines a commitment from the three organisations to work collaboratively to ‘enhance the city’s position as a regional city for sustainable business, balanced living and a leader in education, training and research for regional Australia’. Each organisation will apply the key objectives of the MoU in order to promote strategic and project work, cross collaboration and work towards shared goals such as liveability and sustainability within the city along with regional economic productivity and growth. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM says the collaborative relationship between the three organisations will have a positive impact on the city. “This MoU will help boost Wagga Wagga’s position as a premier regional city by allowing the city’s leading agencies in research and strategic planning to deliver a coordinated approach in terms of improving lifestyle, business and education opportunities,” Cr Conkey said. “Charles Sturt University has a strong focus on
partnering with the towns and regional centres where our campuses are located and the signing of this Memorandum of Understanding further highlights our commitment not only to working with institutions like TAFE and the Wagga Wagga City Council but the people who live and work in the wider Wagga Wagga region,” Charles Sturt University’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Andrew Vann said. The implementation of the MoU will involve an annual strategy forum where each organisation will present strategic plans and their progress, along with quarterly meetings to promote collaboration across the three organisations. “TAFE NSW is enthusiastic about the close association we have with Wagga Wagga City Council and Charles Sturt University,” TAFE NSW Regional General Manager Kerry Penton said. “We have a strong history and as we look forward, we will bring a focus on leadership, diversity and growth to this region. We certainly look forward to this renewed commitment to collaboration, knowing the flow-on effect it will have for the educational sector and our collective contribution to the region.” The official signing of the revised 2017 MoU, which will replace the existing 2012 document, took place on Friday 24 November.

E X PLORE R PA RK CLOSE D FOR CONTROLLE D BU RN
Boorooma’s Explorer Park will be closed today, Saturday 25 November for a hazard reduction controlled burn to be conducted in the park area. The burn is necessary to reduce the large amount of vegetation in the park, which at present cannot be maintained by whipper snipping. The rugged terrain also does not allow mowing in the area. Manager Operations Stephen Jewell said the burn, being conducted by the Rural Fire Service, was a short-term solution to manage the vegetation growth. “Council has been providing a level of maintenance to the park area which has included trimming the vegetation either side of the footpaths and around the picnic areas to maintain public access,” Mr Jewell said. “However, significant vegetation growth has occurred in recent weeks. The control burn
Lodgement of applications prior to Christmas closedown
is a short-term solution to bring this growth under control and help reduce both the risk of bushfires and potential habitat for snakes.” Council is also currently reviewing sustainable measures to keep the vegetation in check and maintain presentation of the area year round. “Once the vegetation is brought back to a manageable level crash grazing to maintain the area will be put in place. “Crash grazing involves bringing in a large number of stock over a number of days to crop the grass down.” The burn is subject to weather conditions and if it cannot be carried out on Saturday will take place on Sunday 26 November. The RFS has advised that the burn will generate smoke, hot embers and heat. More information on how residents can prepare in the lead up to the controlled burn is available at www.rfs.nsw.gov. au/fire-information/hazard-reductions.
The last date for Development Applications, Construction Certificates and Subdivision Certificates to be received before the Christmas closedown is Wednesday 20 December at 4.30pm. Each year Council receives an influx of applications prior to the Christmas closedown and there is insufficient time to acknowledge or begin processing these until almost two weeks later in early January. Please ensure all applications are presented to Council prior to the noted cut-off or held back from lodgement until early in the New Year.
