WITTY WORKS: Museum of the Riverina Manager Luke Grealy says The Bald Archy Prize, founded by Peter Batey OAM, is a great opportunity for artists to show well-known Australians in a whole new light.

We will then directly contact adjoining businesses so they’re aware of the project start date and timeline, and then we’ll advise the community of more specific details.” The indicative works program provided by Fulton Hogan as part of its tender submission indicates that the works are expected to be ongoing for approximately two months. The rehabilitation works will cover the stretch of Pearson Street and Dobney Avenue from the Sturt Highway up to and including the two roundabouts adjacent to Bunnings.
The current surface will be reshaped and renewed, improving safety and ride quality for road users, as well as improving environmental factors such as noise reduction and the flow of surface water. The works will take place at night to minimise inconvenience to the adjoining businesses as well as motorists. The $5.6 million project is being 75 per cent funded by the NSW Government through its Fixing Local Roads program, with Wagga Wagga City Council providing the balance. Let’s keep in touch: Council hoping to build on success The Junior State Cup Southern Conference (JSC) touch titles in Wagga Wagga last weekend (18-20 February) was another success and a boost for the city’s hopes of securing the event when it comes up for tender later this year. The city has hosted the JSC carnival since 2019 and currently has a two-year contract with NSW Touch Association (NSWTA), which will see the event return to Wagga Wagga City Council’s Jubilee Park precinct
again in 2023. Strategic Recreation Officer Peter Cook said Council is keen to continuing building on its success. “The 2022 Junior State Cup drew more than 10,000 people to Wagga Wagga during the three days, which is a great boost for the city and the surrounding region,” Mr Cook said. “We had over 170 teams here and more than 670 games were played over the course of the competition.
“I think we have once again proven our ability to successfully host a sporting event of this size and calibre. “We are looking forward to having the opportunity to put in a bid to host 2024 – 2026 JSC carnivals when the tenders come out, and I’m confident that we can make a strong case for retaining it into the future.” For now, Council’s focus will be on working with NSWTA to ensure the success of the 2023 carnival.

More trees please! Results of Urban Tree Cover Survey The results of Council’s recent Urban Tree Cover Survey are in, with the community giving a clear response – we want more trees. More than 330 people answered the survey, with 91 per cent agreeing there are not enough trees in Wagga Wagga, and over half saying they would be planting more trees in their own backyard. Environmental Education Officer Alice Kent was pleased at the response. “What blew me away was that most respondents rated biodiversity and habitat as the key benefit of trees, with shade coming in second,” Ms Kent said. “I think it shows that we as a community are beginning to look beyond ourselves and understand the way we’re intrinsically interconnected with our environment. “It was also encouraging to see that 98 per cent of respondents agreed that planting trees would help keep our region cool. As we feel the increasing impacts of climate change, it’s great to know that more people see how planting trees will have ongoing benefits for all of us.” In addition to planting more trees in their own backyards, respondents said they want more trees on their nature strips and denser plantings in
their neighbourhoods. “This feedback is valuable as we’ll use it to help develop urban canopy targets for our Urban Cooling Strategy, which were identified as an action under Council’s Biodiversity Strategy: Maldhangilanha 2020–2030,” Ms Kent said. “Our city currently has a canopy cover of only 10.8 per cent, so we’ve got lots of room for improvement. “As most of the land available for additional trees is locked up in backyards and out of Council’s control, it’s reassuring to know that so many community members are working beside us on this tree-planting journey.” The Urban Cooling Strategy will include Council’s proposed plans for cooling our city along with a suburb-by-suburb snapshot into urban temperatures and canopy cover. The draft Urban Cooling Strategy will be presented to Council with a view to proceed to public feedback in April 2022. Council’s One Tree for Me giveaways will restart in June 2022. metres counts as ‘canopy’ (tall enough to cast shade). Natives are a great choice as they cast shade, provide habitat for local birds, and beautiful flowers for your garden without needing a lot of water. Different types of bottlebrushes, for example, grow between 3 to 5 metres. Small flowering gums and bloodwoods are also a great option.

Where to plant Consider what else is in your garden. Leave enough room from your house and your neighbour’s house. When to plant Autumn or winter is the best time to plant as the soil is moist, it’s easier to dig, and plants don’t need as much watering in. Planting in autumn or winter also gives plants time to establish their roots before the summer heat arrives.
From front page The prize for the winning artwork is $10,000. Museum Manager Luke Grealy is encouraging artists from across Australia to get involved and help ensure the successful return of this iconic event. “We are calling for submissions that include wit, slapstick, vulgarity, farce, black comedy,
irreverence, and anything in between, preferably featuring an Australian distinguished in art, science, letters, politics, sport or the media,” Mr Grealy said. “The Bald Archy prize was started by Peter Batey in a corrugated iron shed at Coolac, just north of Gundagai, in 1994, as a send-up of the prestigious portraiture award, the Archibald Prize. “Over the quarter of a century plus since then, it has become an iconic event on the Australian art calendar because ‘taking the mickey’ out of each other appeals to the Australian sense of humour. “It is still judged by sulphurcrested cockatoo, Professor Maude Cockatoo PhD, who is an impeccable judge of satirical art!” Over the years, the prize has been awarded to works featuring a variety of politicians, celebrities and high-profile sports men and
women, including several former prime ministers, Dame Edna Everage/Barry Humphries, the late Bert Newton and Shane Warne. The Bald Archy Prize art exhibition last toured in 2019 and was exhibited in the ACT, Queensland, Victoria and NSW venues including Wagga Wagga and the wider Riverina region in southern NSW. Entries for the 2023 prize are open until 10 January 2023. A preview of the finalists will be launched at the Watson Art Centre in Canberra on 9 February 2023, before the exhibition sets off on a year-long tour around Australia. The winner will be announced in Sydney in mid-March 2023. Entry details, tour dates and locations, and more about the history of The Bald Archy Prize can be found at baldarchy.com. au

Save the date and help clean up our bit of Australia With the 2022 Clean Up Australia Day just around the corner, residents and community groups across the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area are being encouraged to take part in this major community-based environmental event. The main Clean Up Australia Day, which is celebrating 33 years, will be held on Sunday 6 March, with Schools Clean Up Australia Day on Friday 4 March. Wagga Wagga City Council Environmental Education Officer Alice Kent said there has been a positive community response, with 15 sites registered locally by schools, youth groups and community groups in the LGA. “Removing litter and rubbish from the environment improves
community safety and reduces environmental harm and it also makes our city a place that visitors want to spend time in,” Ms Kent said. “The local focus in 2022 is all about the link between land and water and the ease at which land-based litter can become water pollution. “Land-based litter can easily be picked up by flowing water, enter the drain network and be released into local waterways. Small pollutants can be ingested by animals and larger items can cause entanglement. “The recent wetter conditions have increased the mobility of land-based litter ending up in the waterways we love like Lake Albert, the Murrumbidgee River and Flowerdale Lagoon.
“Poor water quality and litter can have significant impacts on native fauna including fish, turtles and platypus.” Wagga Wagga City Council is teaming up with several community groups to host a community clean up activity at Flowerdale Lagoon between 9am–11am on Sunday 6 March. Prior to the clean-up, volunteers will learn about platypus in our local waterways from expert Joanne Connolly. Interested participants can meet at the Flowerdale rest area off the Sturt Highway near Edward Street West at 9am. For further information about Clean Up Australia Day, visit cleanup.org. au
