Rather than being focused on one laneway, this year’s event features a plethora of arts, eats and beats activations in nooks and crannies and laneways, as well as the Victory Memorial Gardens, Wollundry Lagoon and Civic Centre precincts. Eight locations will be activated between 4pm and 9pm, stretching from Wonderland Lane near the Sturt Mall on Baylis Street and extending to the ABC Riverina carpark off Fitzmaurice Street. Visitor Economy and Events Coordinator
Fiona Hamilton said there will be pop-up bars and food vendors, lighting projections, and local and visiting musicians and performers. “There’s no one way, or start or finish point, to this year’s festival. Festival goers can choose their own Lost Lanes adventure,” Ms Hamilton said. “We encourage everyone to spend time at each site before moving on to the next to ensure they get a taste of all the different arts, eats and beats on offer.” A highlight will be the launch of a popup outdoor ice skating rink at the Victory Memorial Gardens. Skate Wagga is part of a special festival hub, which also features several stunning and interactive art installations and remains in place for the two weeks over the June/July school holidays. More about the festival hub and a Lost Lanes program on Page 3.

Off-leash dog park on its way for Gobbagombalin
Construction began this week on an off-leash dog park at Gobbagombalin as part of Wagga Wagga City Council’s planning for open space for the suburb in the city’s north. The facility is being built in the basin on the corner of Yenda Avenue and Paradise Drive. Strategic Asset Planner Ben Creighton said there was strong demand for a dog park from residents during a 12-month long community engagement phase. “Consultation was completed early last year as part of our broader parkland and open space upgrades for this area,” Mr Creighton said. “We then looked at a number of other sites and the types of equipment they had. “We are proposing to split the Gobbagombalin site into two off-leash areas. “One will be a large open

space where dogs can run around while the second will feature different equipment such as ramps and jumps, which will enable the dogs to participate in agility-type activities.” There will also be other inclusions, from mature trees for shade, irrigated turf areas, and furniture for people who want to sit down while their dogs are inside the off-leash area. The project is one of a number from an open space and parklands perspective being constructed to service the needs of the growing northern suburbs of Wagga Wagga. Mr Creighton said it is expected to cost $70,000 and take approximately three months to complete. Local eco-systems in better shape Native fish populations at the city’s lagoon and wetlands now have a better chance to rejuvenate in their natural environment after a program to monitor and remove invasive species was completed this week. A Wagga Wagga City Council contractor spent two days on Wollundry Lagoon and at Marrambidya Wetlands and removed about 750 kilograms of European carp from the waters. Carp are well known as an invasive pest species because of their destructive bottom-feeding habits, which stir up sediments, reduce water quality and damage habitat for native fish existing in the same eco-system.

Council’s Manager Environment and Regulatory Services Mark Gardiner said the program, using the electrofishing technique, was successful and gave Council some valuable data to help control carp in both waterways. “It had been almost 10 years since Council last conducted this exercise in the lagoon and we are pleased with the outcome across the two days,” Mr Gardiner said. “Controlling carp populations gives native fish species a much better chance to breed and thrive in their natural environment. “Carp have the ability to destroy

the fabric of those eco-systems and that’s why it’s important to monitor their spread and keep it under control.” Mr Gardiner said the next step in the program would be to look at growing native fish populations in both waterways. “We’ll look at that data and the opportunity that presents to restock the lagoon and wetlands with more native fish to ensure the eco-system at both locations continues to rejuvenate,” Mr Gardiner said. Carp were caught using the electrofishing technique and humanely placed into an icy slush. They were then taken to fertiliser manufacturer Charlie Carp.

WA G G A WA G G A W E L C O M E S N E W C I T I Z E N S D U R I N G R E F U G E E W E E K Wagga Wagga City Council welcomed 29 new citizens at an Australian citizenship ceremony to mark Refugee Week from 20–26 June 2021. The conferees, who included 13 children, came from seven countries including Bangladesh, Ghana, India, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines and Sri Lanka. They became Australian citizens as part of a ceremony at the Wagga Wagga Civic Centre on Thursday 24 June. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM said Council was marking this year’s national Refugee Week, held each year during June and coinciding with UNHCRs World Refugee Day on 20 June, with a citizenship ceremony to showcase the city’s support for humanitarian resettlement, and to celebrate our community’s multicultural diversity. “Modern Australia has been shaped by migration. Nearly half of all Australians were either born overseas or have a parent who was born
overseas,” Cr Conkey said. “Humanitarian resettlement has played an important part of this story, with more than 920,000 refugees and others in humanitarian need resettled in Australia since the end of World War II. “In welcoming these 29 new citizens and celebrating their full and formal membership of the Australian community, we are also taking this opportunity to showcase and celebrate Australia’s contribution to global humanitarian resettlement efforts.” The Mayor encouraged people to share their Refugee Week celebrations or stories by sharing pictures on social media using #Refugeeweek. Refugees contribute to Australia in many ways; by enhancing the prosperity of their community through local business and social enterprise; sharing their culture; and bringing new ideas. Illuminating city’s CBD for Lost Lanes and beyond! Wiradjuri-inspired artwork ‘Lagoon’ will illuminate and float on the Wollundry Lagoon in Wagga Wagga’s CBD as part of a special festival hub which will be launched at Lost Lanes on Saturday (26 June) and remain on display over the winter school holidays. Installed on the Wollundry Lagoon this week, ‘Lagoon’ is the creation of artists Maurice Goldberg and Matthew Aberline from Goldberg Aberline Studio (GAS) in collaboration with local Wiradjuri artist Owen Lyons. As part of this year’s Lost Lanes festival this $10,000 public art commission, which is part of Council’s endorsed Enliven Public Art Plan, was recently selected by the Public Art Advisory Panel through an Expression of Interest process. The successful artwork for the commission, ‘Lagoon’, celebrates the importance of the lagoon environment, set within Australia’s vast dry landscape. The illuminated installation comprises 24 inflatable patterned reed-like forms floating up to 2.5-metres high in the Wollundry Lagoon, with Owen Lyon’s artwork printed on the surface of these forms as they emerge from the water. Visitor Economy & Events Coordinator Fiona Hamilton said Council is thrilled to have this collaborative work as one of the features of the festival hub, which will centre on the Wollundry Lagoon precinct and Victory Memorial
Gardens for Lost Lanes and during the winter school holidays. “We are encouraging those attending Lost Lanes on Saturday, along with residents and visitors to the city over the school holidays to make the ‘Lagoon’ installation one of their destinations,” Ms Hamilton said. “It’s a beautiful space to find a quiet spot to sit down and enjoy watching the inflatable reeds gently swaying in the breeze.” The festival hub also features the 25m x 15m pop-up ice rink called ‘Skate Wagga’ in the Victory Memorial Gardens, ‘Regal Peacock’, a giant kinetic light artwork, and ‘Plasma’, a interactive artwork that children can climb on. Tickets for Skate Wagga are now on sale at visitwagga.com The activations will remain in place from Saturday 26 June to Sunday 11 July.
