Tech Savvy Elders pilot program for First Nations Elders Wagga Wagga City Library has partnered with the NSW Department of Communities and Justice to develop a tailored Tech Savvy Elders pilot program for Wiradjuri and First Nations Elders. The initiative, which begins on Monday 28 March, is based on the Tech Savvy Seniors bi-lingual program delivered at the library in 2021 and will inform a
state-wide rollout through all public libraries in NSW. Wagga Wagga City Council Aboriginal Community Development Officer Bernard Higgins said the pilot will be delivered by Indigenous trainers, with support and equipment provided by the library, and funding from NSW Department of Communities and Justice. “It’s important to be able to support our Elders and give them the opportunity to learn these skills,” Mr Higgins said. “The COVID restrictions over the past two years have highlighted the increased reliance on technology for communicating with family and friends, yet many of our Elders are constantly having issues with the technology
that most of us take for granted.” The training course comprises classes held over four Monday afternoons. Three separate courses will be held over the coming months, with the first getting underway on 28 March. Participants will learn how to use online video apps, social media and emails, as well as how to access MyGov and ServiceNSW and how to keep using these apps once they have completed the program. Indigenous trainer Sarah Levett is looking forward to taking the classes out to the community hubs at Ashmont, Kooringal and Tolland. “It is a really great initiative because it’s free and more accessible because it’s out

This will help bridge the gap in the tech skills of our Elders.” Fellow indigenous trainer Wes Boney said there has been strong interest from within the First Nations community to take part in the sessions. “They are happy to be learning from Indigenous teachers because they feel safe and they know who they can talk to and there’s no shame; we break that PILOT PARTNERSHIP: Council’s Aboriginal Community stigma,” Mr Boney said. Paving the way for RiFL Hub terminal project
MOVING AHEAD: Work is progressing on the development and construction of Council’s industrial subdivision adjacent to the RiFL terminal. These works form part of the $14.4 million second stage of the project, which includes construction of rail and intermodal terminal infrastructure required to load and unload freight on the main southern rail network between Melbourne and Sydney. Visy Logistics will operate and manage the RiFL Hub terminal and master siding under a Public Private Partnership with Wagga Wagga City Council. Council Director Regional Activation
Michael Keys said the pavers cover 26,000 square metres and took four weeks to install. “It was an impressive effort to get this part of the project completed within such a short timeframe and it’s another major step for the terminal,” Mr Keys said. “The focus now is on the finishing touches such as lighting, electricity and services for the operational interface between the trains, the terminal and the trucks.

Outstanding imaginations: students help design artwork for pump station refresh
COLLABORATING ARTISTS: (from left) Cultural Officer Lauren Reynolds, artist Carla Gottgens and Wagga Wagga Public School students with a replica of the Simmons Street park pump station.
Expressions of Interest Old Ambulance Station Wagga Wagga City Council is seeking expressions of interest from parties interested in licensing the old Ambulance Station building, 56 Johnston Street. Submissions of EOI open: Friday 25 March and close Friday 22 April 2022 at 4pm.

Students from Wagga Wagga Public School are helping artist Carla Gottgens create designs to be used in the transformation of a nearby wastewater pump station at Simmons Street park. Wagga Wagga City Council initiated an Expressions of Interest process in October 2021 seeking an artist to transform the pump station with a new vibrant creative treatment. Cultural Officer Lauren Reynolds said Wagga Wagga Public School was invited to be involved in the project given the school’s proximity to Simmons Street park. “We wanted children who live and go to school in the neighbourhood to be involved, and the school was really happy to take part and have been very supportive,” Ms Reynolds said. A group of students provided Council’s selection panel with feedback on the various designs submitted for the mural project, with the panel ultimately selecting Ms Gottgens’ design concept.
“The students really liked Carla’s design which involved animals, activities, and an element of seek-and-find with little creatures and other surprises hidden throughout the mural,” Ms Reynolds said. “The children felt this would appeal to the young children who use the playground – which is great that they were so considerate of what would work in that space.” This week Ms Gottgens conducted a creative workshop program with a mixture of students from grades 3–6, exploring themes of play, natural environment and connection. The students created images of various animals, insects and birds which will contribute to the final design to be installed on the pump station next month. Ms Gottgens said it was important for the children to have a feeling of ownership of the artwork. “This series of workshops is really important for the Simmons
Street pumphouse, partly because the kids will use the park all the time … it’s essentially their project,” Ms Gottgens said. “As a practicing artist …you have to create something that is site-specific and has relevance to the people who will live, work and play in that area long after the artist has gone. “Working with children is a great way to tap into the next generation of thinkers to get inspiration – their imagination is outstanding.” The finished project will improve the public amenity and street appeal of the site, and provide students of Wagga Wagga Public School who live and learn in the neighbourhood with new creative experiences and skills development. The painting of the pump station is scheduled to be carried out between 7am and 5pm from Thursday 14 April to Sunday 24 April 2022, weather permitting.

Lake Albert gets the all clear Wagga Wagga City Council has issued the all clear for Lake Albert after receiving the results of the latest tests on water samples taken from the lake. An alert for blue-green algae was issued on 7 March 2022 after visual signs of algae scum were observed in Lake Albert. Manager Environment and Recreation Services Mark Gardiner said the first test results from samples taken last week came back Amber, indicating a reduction in blue-green algae. “Council undertook further testing of the lake water on Monday (21 March) and both samples have come back low and the current warnings for blue-green algae have been lifted,” Mr Gardiner said.
Public Notices
“Council advises that Lake Albert is now suitable for recreational use.” Advisory signage that was installed at Lake Albert following the blue-green algae alert was removed on Friday morning (25 March).
