FUTURE VISION: Wagga View team member Leanne Frow with Wagga residents Jamie Bratusa and Olivia Koth at the Wagga View pop-up shop this week.
Plan for future embraced by city The Wagga View plan has been embraced by hundreds of community members and a state parliamentarian this week. The draft Wagga View plan, which consists of more than 200 strategies that will help shape the future of Wagga, was endorsed to go on public display at last Monday night’s Council meeting. More than 400 residents have engaged with the draft Wagga View plan through a pop-shop at the Wagga Wagga Marketplace on Wednesday and Thursday. Feedback from the community on the draft
plan has so far been positive, Corporate Strategy Coordinator and Wagga View team member Serena Wallace said. “People in general appreciate how comprehensive this plan. It is great to see those that contributed earlier in the year come back and be able to link their response back to the draft plan.” As well as community feedback, the draft Wagga View plan also received praise from State Multiculturalism Minister the Hon John Ajaka. The Wagga View plan includes four guiding principles – thriving, innovative, connected and inclusive – and captures five strategic directions for the city. Inclusion was a new measure added as a

direct result of community consultation. Mr Ajaka was pleased to see Wagga’s commitment to being a more inclusive community. “The NSW Government wants to make NSW a more inclusive place to live and work for everyone, including people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds,” Mr Ajaka said. “I commend Wagga Wagga City Council on their commitment to making the local community, as well as their services and facilities, more inclusive for everyone. “My agency Multicultural NSW looks forward to working closely with Council through the Riverina Regional Advisory Council to consult and provide strategic
advice on the final version of the plan.” This State Government endorsement is a positive step forward for the city and helps strengthen partnerships across the different tiers of government. “We have aligned the Wagga View plan with state plans and policies so that Wagga is better placed to access funding opportunities,” Mrs Wallace said. “Although we are aligning with the state; through our community consultation and stakeholder engagement we have been able to tailor each strategy and solution so it is the best fit for Wagga.” Find out more about Wagga View at, wagga.nsw.gov.au/waggaview.

NAUGHTY TO NICE: Library Programs Officer Peter Casey with some donations made through the Food for Fines campaign.
A ‘fine’ way to give back
The season of giving is being celebrated by the Wagga Wagga City Library through its ever-popular Food for Fines campaign. Returning for 2016, Food for Fines is the Library’s way of gifting its members the chance to erase any fines they may have accumulated for overdue library returns throughout the year. All members need to do is donate non-perishable food items, and, just like a Christmas miracle, their fines will disappear. The campaign, now in its 17th year, will help stock up the Salvation Army’s pantry during the busy holiday season. “Even if you don’t have any
library fines, you can still come in and make a donation to this important cause,” Library Manager Claire Campbell said. “Your contribution will support the Salvation Army’s hard work and ensure everyone in our community can have a merry Christmas. “Tinned meals, pasta, beans, cereals and recipe bases are really helpful items. Just make sure your donation is non-perishable so it can be distributed when it is needed most.” The program is also Council’s way of giving back to the community during the festive season by forfeiting the money from overdue fees.
Since 2004, every branch of Riverina Regional Library have also been involved, meaning residents across the region can also donate to this worthwhile cause. Around the region other various local charities will be the recipients, as nominated by their branch libraries. The community can make donations to the Food For Fines campaign until close of business on Christmas Eve. Keep up-to-date with all that’s happening across the Riverina Library network by following the Wagga Wagga City Library or Riverina Regional Library Facebook pages.

Don’t let their pint-size status fool you – Wagga Wagga’s newest furry friends are proving to be a big deal. Since relocating to the Wagga Wagga Zoo and Aviary last Friday the two cute and cuddly pademelons have been receiving plenty of attention for the Wagga Wagga community. The boy and girl marsupials have already put smiles on the faces of many zoo visitors in the past week. A City of Wagga Wagga social media naming competition also received more than 60 suggestions for the pair. This list has been reduced down to a top four. The Wagga Wagga community are now asked to vote for their favourite from the following four name combinations: Rocky and Skye, Tictac and Mintie, Paddy and Melon or Bubble and Squeak. Vote for your favourite boy and girl combination via the City of Wagga Wagga Facebook page, by Thursday 1 December.

Council News - A Wagga Wagga City Council publication
SHELT ER OPEN DAY A BIG SUCCE S S Fifteen furry friends have found their forever homes following a highly successful open day at the Glenfield Road Animal Shelter on 19 November. Hundreds of community members visited the shelter to learn tips on pet behaviour management and responsible pet ownership, browse and purchase pet-friendly supplies and meet the devoted staff who care for the animals that find their way into the shelter. Animal Welfare Supervisor Belinda Gibbs, who joined the shelter following time as a veterinary nurse, RSPCA supervisor and feline behaviourist, said it was great to see so many animals rehomed on the day.
“We had eight adoptions on the day and 15 adoptions in total as a result of the open day, which I couldn’t be more happy about,” she said. “We had a great turn out from the public and it was a steady flow all day. “It was really nice just to see people from the community just pop in to show their support.” Anyone looking for a new pet can contact the shelter at wagga.nsw. gov.au/animals or call 6971 4651 during business hours. The price of adoption includes desexing, vaccination, worming, microchipping and lifetime registration.
HEAVY MACHINERY: The Glenfield Road overpass is being overhauled overnight.
Glenfield Road/Pearson Street transformation almost complete Wagga motorists would have started to notice the difference in the road surface along the Glenfield Road/Pearson Street overpass. Works to rehabilitate the 300m section of road have been progressing well. Since Sunday, City of Wagga Wagga staff and contractors Fulton Hogan have been working through the night, removing the damaged existing road surface and replacing it with a heavybound asphalt pavement. Some minor machinery and stock allocation set-backs earlier this week have resulted in the project being extended by two days. The revised completion date is now the morning of Tuesday 29 November. The road closure time for the works has also been brought forward half-an-hour, to 6pm, to assist with efficiencies.
“Works have been progressing well and have been helped along with the addition of some cooler temperature nights this week. The colder evenings helped cool the asphalt quicker, so we can have the road open in time, or earlier, for the morning traffic,” Supervisor Wearing Operations Lee Shoemark said. “We would like to thank motorists for their continued patience as we work through this project. The end result will be a smoother, better road surface for the thousands of cars that travel this section of road each day.” These works involve the removal of the top layers of the road and replacing it with a hotmix asphalt laid at more than 170 degrees Celsius. The end result is a smooth road surface that can withstand high traffic volumes. The $1M project is part of the City of Wagga Wagga’s planned rehabilitation program.
RESEALING TO START To complement the overpass rehabilitation works, the City of Wagga Wagga will be resealing a section of Urana Street and Glenfield Road on Saturday 3 December. These works will be carried out from 7am to 5pm with the road closed to motorists and detours in place, weather permitting. Glenfield Road will be resealed from the Fernleigh Road intersection to the overpass roundabout. About a 200metre stretch of Urana Street, starting at the overpass roundabout, will also be resealed. These works are being carried out separate to the night works.
Nominate now! Inductees will be recognised as part of the City of Wagga Wagga Australia Day Ceremony held on Wednesday 25 January. Nominations close 5pm Friday 16 December 2017 For more information or to download a nomination form visit www.wagga.nsw.gov.au/AustraliaDay or call Council’s recreation officer on 1300 292 442.

The next step of creating an all-inclusive Wagga community is for a changing room to be built in Wagga.
councillor.koschel@wagga.nsw.gov.au
A changing room is a facility for those who can’t use standard accessible toilets. These rooms contain changing tables, ceiling hoist and other speciality equipment. Without a changing room, a person with disabilities is put at risk, and or families are forced to risk their own health and safety by changing their loved ones on a toilet floor. I learnt this over the last few months by
spending time with local families who are in need of these facilities in Wagga. I am currently working with Council to try and get this up and running. On Monday 5 December, Council is giving you the chance to have your say on our future with a Disability Inclusion Action Plan forum. I encourage everyone to come and help us create this plan between 1.30pm and 4.30pm at the Wagga
Wagga Art Gallery’s Links Gallery. Community engagement and involvement is essential. I was elected to represent you, the community. Please feel free to contact myself at any time with your concerns and ideas at councillor.koschel@ wagga.nsw.gov.au.

More than 350 residents took part in the choir, which was the Civic Theatre’s community production for 2016.
