Stage set for W-League clash The countdown is in full swing for Wagga Wagga’s historic W-League clash, with the heavyweight trial showdown between Sydney FC and the Newcastle Jets just days away. Sydney FC, the reigning W-League champions, are set to arrive in the city on Friday, ready for an action-packed 48 hours before kick-off at McDonald’s Park on Sunday 3 November. “As part of the club’s visit, more than 650 kids, across five schools, will have the

chance to participate in gala day clinics on Friday morning,” Strategic Asset Planner Parks and Recreation Ben Creighton said. “In the afternoon, players will visit another nine schools, engaging with around 1000 kids. “At 5pm members of the public will have their first chance to see the team in action, when Sydney FC meets Football Wagga Wagga’s National Premier League team at McDonald’s Park. On Saturday morning Sydney FC stars will return to McDonald’s Park to assist in facilitating a Football Gala Day, prior to a signing session." Lake Albert Sharks youngster India Illsley is eagerly awaiting her chance to hone her skills under the guidance of the superstar Sydney line-up on Saturday morning. India has been playing football for the

Sharks for the past three years, following in her brother James’ footsteps. “Three years ago, India said out of the blue, ‘I want to play football’,” India’s mum Melissa said. “I registered her with Lake Albert. The club rang me back and said she is the only female player who has registered, and would she mind being in a team with boys?’ “Of course, she just wanted to play.” Football forms a big part of the Illsley family’s life, with dad Rob, a proud Englishman and Bristol FC supporter. “Rob and James have been to a couple of European Premier League games out in the UK, because we go back fairly regularly,” Mrs Illsley said. The whole family is looking forward to the opportunity to be part of the crowd at the

ground-breaking W-League clash. “I think it’s an amazing opportunity and I really hope it gets well supported,” Mrs Illsley said. “I’m pretty confident it will, because this is a very sporty city. “It’s going to be great to see W-League players in action here. We’re really looking forward to it.” Adding to the family’s excitement, eightyear-old India will enjoy a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ experience at the clash, winning the opportunity to present the official game ball. She’ll join coin toss competition winner Suzie Neilsen in the centre of the ground prior to kick-off at 3pm on Sunday.

TRAFFIC CHANGES ON FARRER ROAD THIS WEEKEND

Preliminary works in the lead-up to the full upgrade of Farrer Road in Boorooma will continue this weekend with traffic changes in place for the two days. A section of Farrer Road is being closed to allow drilling work on the gas pipeline relocation to proceed across the road. The section of road will be closed from 7am Saturday 26 October to late evening on Sunday 27 October. Motorists and

residents in the area are advised detours from both the eastern end (Coolamon Rd) and western end (Boorooma St) of Farrer Road will take motorists via Kingsford Smith Road, Bradman Drive, Whitten Avenue and then back onto Farrer Road. Wagga Wagga City Council Senior Project Manager Silas Darby said the works were an important part of the complete redesign and widening of the road which is scheduled to start

later this year. “We’re getting closer to works starting on the widening of Farrer Road but these preliminary works around the gas pipeline and drainage need to be completed first,” Mr Darby said. “Our drillers encountered a problem with rock and we’ve had to make alternative plans for the pipeline relocation. As a result, the road will need to close for the weekend.”

SOMBRE SAFET Y MESSAGE HITS HOME

Michelle Rath’s 49th birthday started like so many others, with an early text message from her youngest son, Alex. It was short and beautifully simple, reading ‘Happy birthday Mummy. I’ll give you a call later on during the day.” Tragically, Michelle would never again hear the voice of her beloved son. Only hours later, whilst working inside the roof of a residential property north of Adelaide, the 23-year-old, fourth year refrigeration and airconditioning apprentice came into contact with a live wire. He was fatally electrocuted. “Alex was fault finding when the accident occurred,” his father Rob

said, while addressing Wagga Wagga City Council staff on Tuesday. “The tenant of the property had heard two bangs 15 minutes before speaking to Alex’s boss Daniel on the phone. “By the time an ambulance arrived on the scene, 27 minutes had elapsed.” Those 27, long minutes robbed Alex – an otherwise fit and healthy young man - of any chance of survival. “Following electric shock, there’s a window of opportunity where paramedics can bring you back,” Rob said, after being consulted by the emergency services. “That small chance to be revived was taken away from Alex.”

From that moment on, life irrevocably changed for the Rath family. “I will never have another birthday. I now call it Mother-Son Day,” Michelle said. “All we have now are memories. We’ll never get the chance to take another photo of Alex.” Michelle and Rob bravely shared their story in Wagga as part of Wagga City Council’s Safety Week 2019, in a bid to spare other families the trauma, grief and loss they’ve experienced – and continue to live with each and every day. “Don’t risk taking short cuts as it can ultimately cut your life short,” Michelle said. “If you don’t have the appropriate training, don’t do it. If you don’t

feel safe, don’t do it. If you see something, be brave and speak up. “It doesn’t matter how good you are at your job, if you’re not here to reap the rewards of it today, it’s all for nothing." Council’s Work Health and Safety Advisor Julie Philpott echoed the Rath’s message, describing Safety Week as an important opportunity for all employees to reflect on why they should perform their jobs safely. “All of us have multiple reasons to go home at the end of the day in the shape that we arrived,” she said. “This is a week to think about the ways you can ensure your own safety, and that of your mates.”

Community comes together for Fusion19 Unseasonably cool weather couldn’t keep the crowds from Wagga Wagga’s premier celebration of live music, food and culture. About 8000 people filled the Victory Memorial Gardens and Civic Precinct for Fusion19 on Saturday 19 October, sampling street eats from 30 countries and experiencing a diverse mix of performers and musicians. “Fusion has grown to be one of the city’s biggest outdoor events, with more than 8000 people from the region and beyond soaking in the sights, sounds and flavours from across the world,” Council’s Director Community Janice Summerhayes said. “This year featured another exciting and eclectic line-up, including headliners Kardajala Kirridarra, Thandi Phoenix, Hot Potato Band and Big Sky Mountain. “As always, our multicultural street festival also featured community performances, pop-up shops and DJ sets – as well as kids’ activities including the popular Trash Puppets and 60s sci-fi inspired roving entertainers.”

FIRST NATIONS CULTURE ON SHOW AT NRL-COUNCIL EVENT

A joint partnership between Wagga Wagga City Council and Play NRL South West has once again delivered an empowering collision of sport and First Nations Culture in the heart of the CBD. The Walanmarra Gundyarri School Cultural Day - now in its third year - is a holistic event designed to foster an inclusive environment, where pupils can engage in activities encouraging respect and recognition of the world’s oldest continuous living culture. Wiradjuri Elder Uncle James Ingram attended the day to share his expertise and knowledge of Indigenous artefacts with the next generation. “We’re teaching the kids about the different types of rocks, the different tools and implements you can find in the bush, their uses and their different names,” Uncle James said. “Hopefully next time, when they find something out in Country, they’ll know what it is. We’re also teaching respect, helping the kids understand why it’s important to leave these things where they are found. “It’s about exploring young minds and watching the light bulb go off as they finally get that beautiful ‘ahh’ moment.” Girls at the Centre staff, alongside artist Sarah Levett, demonstrated Aboriginal painting techniques and artistic expression used by First Nations People for centuries. It was one of the five diverse stations

Steven O’Neill from Relationships Australia also presented traditional Aboriginal games, which were a huge hit with the young participants along with the language station run by Aunty Gail Manderson where kids learnt Wiradjuri words and their meaning. “It’s an opportunity to highlight and celebrate the unique relationship between our First Nations Peoples and the sport of rugby league,” Game Development Officer Simon Vanzanten said.

This year’s Fusion also strived to reduce waste from single-use plastic products, with festival-goers feasting from compostable catering ware. Ms Summerhayes said while Fusion is one of the premier festivals on the city’s calendar, the heart of the event is still in celebrating the many cultures and backgrounds that make up our community. “Each year, Fusion showcases people from all backgrounds, faiths and language groups who make up our community,” she said. “And for many of the food vendors, it’s not only a chance to share their traditional food with others, it gives them experience in running a small business or raises money for services or initiatives for their community.” Fusion19 was presented and funded by Wagga Wagga City Council ($50,000) and made possible by Major Sponsor Riverina Water ($25,000). Fusion is also supported by Origin and our Cultural Partner the Multicultural Council of Wagga Wagga and Media Sponsor The Daily Advertiser.

There’s nothing emu-sing about the exciting work taking place inside the Wagga Wagga Botanic Gardens Zoo and Aviary as part of Council’s $900K Entwine project. Entwine is built on the philosophy that history loves botany and botany loves history. This exciting project will strengthen the connection between the Botanic Gardens and the Museum of the Riverina through an engaging interpretative trail and refurbishment of historical gardens and places to further activate this precinct. By the end of November, the Botanic Gardens Zoo and Aviary, a beloved local attraction will have new internal fencing protecting its pair of emus, the garden’s alpacas and the popular kangaroos. Manager Parks and

Strategic Operations Henry Pavitt said the works have been purposely undertaken outside the busy school holiday period to minimise disruption to visitors. “We’re currently upgrading the fencing in the alpaca’s enclosure… that should be finished by early next week,” he said. “Once those fences are done, we’ll get started on the emu yard and the dividing fence running through the kangaroo’s area of the zoo.” The new alpaca fencing will stand 1500mm high, while the kangaroos and emu borders will lift to 2100mm, meeting Department of Primary Industries standards. To make life easier for contractors working on the project, the zoo’s large, flightless birds will be moved in with their smaller, native Australian counterparts – the Swamp Wallabies. However, the plan has hit a

“Each time we get them to the gate, they stop and refuse to go another step… it’s a work in progress.”

Upgrading the zoo exhibits with practical improvements like new fencing is just one aspect of the large-scale Entwine project, jointly funded by Council and the NSW Government. It’s designed to increase visitation to both the Botanic Gardens and the Museum of the Riverina. “As well as the zoo fencing, Entwine will include new signage around the zoo site, barbecue facilities and a new playground area,” Project Manager Thomas Lemerle said. “We are still working on the concept design, but we expect to have it finished by mid-next month. “This project is going to greatly improve this whole space, creating opportunities for new animals and different exhibits down the track.” Mr Pavitt said there’s already significant hype surrounding the possibility

of welcoming new creatures - great and small - to the zoo. “A lot of people have said they’d like to see some echidnas,” Mr Pavitt said. “Some of the more exotic animals would be great, but we’ll have to wait and see. More than likely we’ll be going down the native animals line.” On average the Wagga Wagga Botanic Gardens Zoo and Aviary welcomes around 120,000 visitors a year. Both Mr Pavitt and Mr Lemerle agree the overdue upgrade will only serve to increase visitation into the future. “This is a really timely and important development,” Mr Pavitt said. “We’re also in the process of rectifying the ponds and a few drainage issues, which will hopefully lead to new pens in the future. “There’s a lot going on, and a lot to be excited about.”

Craning in a cool change for Civic Theatre A 130-tonne crane (pictured) looming large over the Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre earlier this week stood out as a beacon of progress alongside the city’s renowned landmark. The beast was required to assist in a major upgrade of the theatre’s air-conditioning system. “The crane on site was capable of a 47-metre reach with load of 3 tonne,” Council’s Facilities Management Coordinator Luke Fitzgerald explained. “The air-conditioning unit installed earlier this week was for the auditorium, particularly important in looking after the public seating space. “The unit was by far the largest and heaviest installed as part of the Civic Theatre Air-conditioning Upgrade. It weighed just under 3 tonne and required a reach of 42.5 metres to the platform on the roof.” The project will modernise the theatre’s air-conditioning system by the installation of six new

been made at the Theatre to make it more comfortable for patrons coming to see a show." The air-conditioning upgrade isn’t the only exciting energy efficient development contributing to improving the theatre’s appeal, with the facility’s lighting having a major upgrade. “We’ve replaced all the stage lights, along with the foyer lights to an LED, energy saving system,” Ms Campbell said. “The LED lights use a fraction of the energy required to power normal theatre lighting, that equates to massive energy savings. “LED lights also mean we have access to the whole colour wheel. They are more versatile, giving us more opportunities to wow our audiences.” Focus will soon shift to the installation of solar panels atop the Civic Theatre as part of Council’s wider Solar Project, which will also see systems installed on the Civic Centre and Livestock Marketing Centre Pump House.
