Weekly information from us to you

meet marquis! our new zoo resident There’s a new arrival at Wagga Zoo & Aviary. Zoo Curator Kieralee Tori is expecting Marquis the miniature donkey will be a star attraction as the Zoo & Aviary opens seven days week over the school holidays. Read more about Marquis’ journey to Wagga on Page 3.

Stay COVID-safe when out and about It is a great time of year to get out and about in Wagga Wagga and visit its many attractions and beautiful parks and gardens.

Wagga Wagga City Council is reminding residents and visitors to be aware when they do head out to these public spaces that there are COVID restrictions in place. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM said traditionally, the Spring school holidays see people head to places like the Wagga Beach and Wiradjuri Reserve, the Victory Memorial Gardens, Botanic Gardens, the Oasis Aquatic Centre and the Wagga Zoo & Aviary.

“While the weather is a little cool at the moment, we are still expecting to see a lot of people gathering outdoors with family and friends and visiting the local attractions, particularly with their children on holidays,” Councillor Conkey said. “We’re also anticipating we’ll see a rise in visitor numbers as people from other regions look to have at least some kind of ‘getaway’ holiday. “It makes it as important as ever to follow the rules on gatherings and social distancing and practice good hand hygiene.” There will be different COVID guidelines at different locations within the LGA, and it is up to patrons to ensure they are aware of those differences and follow the direction of Council staff. For example, the Wagga Zoo & Aviary

has introduced a QR code sign in system which requires visitors to use their mobile phone to register their details to assist with contact tracing. Manager Parks and Strategic Operations Henry Pavitt said as part of its COVID safe measures, the Zoo conducts regular cleans and has hand sanitising stations located around the facility. “We also have a limit of 250 on the number of people allowed entry at any one time,” Mr Pavitt said. “Please be patient with staff if they are required to close the gates periodically until numbers reach the safe limit. “In line with NSW Health, it is also recommended people wear a face mask during their visit.” These measures coincide with the Zoo opening it gates seven-days a week over

the school holiday period, from Saturday 26 September until Sunday 11 October. No matter where you are these school holidays, please continue to exercise caution and take appropriate measures: • Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly; • Maintain a 1.5m physical distance; • Wearing a face mask recommended; • Stay home if you’re feeling unwell; NSW Health and NSW Police are the State Government agencies which have jurisdiction over public gatherings as per the current Public Health Orders. If you are feeling unwell or have any of the following symptoms - sore throat, cough, fever, or shortness of breath - get tested. Call the Murrumbidgee COVID-19 Hotline on 1800 831 099.

Weekly waste tip Be a bright spark and DON’T dump electrical items in the yellow lid recycling bin! Electrical items can be delivered to the Gregadoo Waste Management Centre for a small fee or taken it to a scrap metal dealer. For more info visit: wagga.nsw.gov.au/householdwaste

COUNCILLOR COLUMN

It has certainly been a big week for Wagga Wagga City Council, or to be more specific, a big Monday. Three major events took place on Monday. The first was the

reopening of the upgraded Eunony Bridge. This project involved strengthening and widening the 40 year old bridge. It cost $10.6M and has seen the weight limit increase from 60 tonnes to 160 tonnes. I would like to thank the public for

their patience over the six months it took to complete the project which saw around 4000 vehicles per day diverted through the CBD and across the Gobba Bridge. Later that morning, the official opening of the first stage of the levee upgrade took place which

has seen the level of flood protection for the CBD increase from a 1 in 60 year level to protection to a 1 in 100 year. The work has included the construction of a pedestrian and cycleway on top of the levee which offers sweeping views across the

0417 467 760 | councillor.conkey@wagga.nsw.gov.au Murrumbidgee River. It has become extremely popular for locals and visitors alike with many hundreds of people using the pathway each and every week. One “wag” has commented that due to the volumes of traffic, we should have added

passing lanes. The next stage of the project is to provide extra protection for North Wagga residents with both the Council and North Wagga residents waiting on a review of the independent consultant’s report to see if a higher levee than recommended

should be considered. The third opening on Monday was the new NRMA electric vehicle fast charging station which is located in the Cross Street Car Park. This charging station will drastically reduce the time to charge electric vehicles,

down to around 30 minutes. And the goods news … it’s free. Expect to see many more of these fast charging stations established around the city in the years ahead.

Oasis splash and fun, bring snacks for one Families will be heading to the Oasis Regional Aquatic Centre these school holidays – and while splash and fun swimming is back, there are a few changes in store. Oasis Programs Supervisor Fiona Claridge said the Oasis team was hoping the community would work with staff to help keep everyone’s swimming experience a safe and positive one. “There’s a maximum number of people we can allow in each pool,” Ms Claridge said. “To help manage numbers, we’ll have COVID-safety officers keeping track. If one pool is full when you come in, we may ask you to wait for someone to leave or give you the option to use a different pool. “We’re not restricting how long people can be in the water, we’re just asking the community to be mindful of each other – if you see someone waiting to get in, and you’ve been in for a while, maybe hop out and let them have a turn. “Everyone has been mindful of each other so far, and we’re hoping that’ll continue over the holidays.” Enjoying a snack after a swim is a regular part of a pool visit, and for once it’s okay to keep your food to yourself! “We’re encouraging everyone to only bring food for themselves

or their families – snacks that are designed for one, like muesli bars or bananas,” Ms Claridge said. “We’re not open for birthday parties or gatherings – we can’t have people congregating and sharing food because it’s important we keep to the four square metres per person rule. “We’ll also have limited seating, basically just for people who are watching their children, so we won’t have tables and chairs out for food and drinks.” If you’re wanting to swim laps, the best time to visit during school holidays is early morning or in the evening, as staff are expecting the pool to be busy with leisure swimmers from approximately 11am onwards. “We’ll have lap lanes in place in the morning and take them out if we’ve got a lot of people coming in during the day for leisure swimming, moving them to the 25 or 50 metre pool,” Ms Claridge said. “We’ll cater for people as best we can. We’re just asking everyone to please listen to our COVID-safety officers and be considerate of each other – that way everyone will have fun, which is what school holidays are all about.” For more information visit oasiswagga.com

WELCOME BACK: Lifeguard Luke Maslin and Oasis Programs Supervisor Fiona Claridge are ready to welcome the city’s families for leisure swimming these school holidays – and are asking everyone to play their part in keeping the holidays safe and fun.

Wagga ready for Riverina Esports Cup challenge

TUNED IN: Wagga teenager Kodi Fiege is keen for the inaugural Riverina Esports Cup and says the city has a number of gamers who will take the challenge right up to Albury and Griffith rivals.

It may be esports being played in a virtual world of online entertainment but the inaugural Mayor’s Challenge being laid down by Wagga Wagga to rival cities Albury and Griffith has never been more real. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM (pictured) has endorsed a novel way to generate interest in the first Riverina Esports Cup which starts across the region next Tuesday (29 September). And it’s definitely game on, with Albury Mayor Kevin Mack and Griffith’s civic leader John Dal Broi accepting the challenge! The Mayor of the winning city which claims the inaugural Riverina Esports Cup will have the right to demand his “opponents” wear an article of clothing promoting the winning city for one week whilst on mayoral duties. A social media post on that Council’s channels will also be posted of the Mayor in the winning city’s branding, and shared by the winning Council. “It will be great to see Kevin and John wearing a Wagga Wagga hat

or t-shirt to work,” Cr Conkey said. “It’s very important my mayoral counterparts get the opportunity to recognise what a great regional city Wagga Wagga is … and how we can benefit the communities of Albury and Griffith. “There’s always been strong rivalry between all three cities in traditional sporting challenges, so

I’m laying down the gauntlet for our first ever esports tournament … it’s something worth fighting for.” Registrations for the tournament, opened on Friday 11 September with two of the most popular esport games – Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (18+) and Rocket League (13+). To register go to Australian Esports League website at ael.org.au

He’s cute and cuddly ... and we call him ‘Marquis’ There is a saying that ‘good things come in small packages’, and the latest addition to the Wagga Zoo and Aviary’s stable certainly fits the bill. Marquis the miniature donkey arrived at the zoo in early August and, over the past few weeks, has been settling into his new digs. Zoo Curator Kieralee Tori said the two-year-old came from a miniature donkey stud, near the ACT. “The start of 2020 was a bit of a rough trot for little Marquis,” Miss Tori said.

“His previous owner lost her farm in the summer bushfires and Marquis was given back to the stud. “Now, he’s joined our herd and he’s fitting right in. He’s become best buddies with Shrimp, who is our donkey bred from Jenny and Forrest. “They love to sunbake together and usually aren’t too far away from each other in their enclosure.” With the zoo to open seven days a week over the school holidays, there will be plenty of opportunity for people to come

along and see Marquis and all the other residents. The guinea pigs are back in their castle after its renovation, while the free-roaming peacocks are displaying as it is currently mating season. “We also have the cute and fluffy alpacas, our entertaining goats, the kangaroos and swamp wallabies, fallow deer, and then all the birds in the aviaries,” Miss Tori said. The zoo is open from 9am-4pm (entry gate closes at 3.45pm) daily until Sunday 11 October 2020.

SIGN IN: Council Business Support Officer Angeline Little urges visitors to the zoo to ensure they sign in using the QR code process.

Q R CODE ACCE SS INTRODUCE D AT W A G G A’ S Z O O A N D AV I A R Y The Wagga Zoo and Aviary has introduced a new QR code sign in system for the protection of the public and staff as part of its COVID safe measures. It coincides with the zoo opening it gates seven-days a week over the school holiday period, from Saturday 26 September until Sunday 11 October. Wagga Wagga City Council’s Business Support Officer Angeline Little said in line with government regulations, all guests will be required to register their details to assist with contact tracing. “We are asking for the public’s cooperation in following our COVID safe measures,” Mrs Little said.

“When you arrive at the zoo, you will find sign in station instructions at the gate. There are two options, you can sign in using the QR code on your smart phone via your camera, or via a URL code. “So, don’t forget to bring your mobile phone along so you can sign in safely and securely before entering the zoo.” If you don't have access to a mobile phone, please fill out a Visitor Registration form on-line before you head to the Zoo, at tinyurl.com/ yxupcnyl As part of its COVIDsafe measures, the zoo has hand sanitising stations located around the facility. Manager Parks and Strategic Operations

Henry Pavitt said it also has a limit of 250 on the number of people allowed entry at any one time. “Please be patient with staff if they are required to close the gates periodically until numbers reach the safe limit,” Mr Pavitt said. “It is also recommended that people wear masks during their visit.” For the next fortnight, the zoo will be open from 9am-4pm seven days a week, and entry is free. When school resumes on Monday 12 October, the zoo will be closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays while works continue on the beautification project.

Shade sails and big trucks: LMC upgrade continues Earthworks are underway at Wagga Wagga City Council’s Livestock Marketing Centre (LMC) as part of the $2.2M project to upgrade the sheep yards and increase sale day capacity. Civil works are being undertaken in preparation for the construction of new sheep drafts, stacking pens and delivery pens. Additionally, new drainage will be installed together with new ramps, the works increasing the sheep selling facility by 20 per cent. Project Coordinator Kym Holbrook said retractable shade sails would also be constructed over a section of the new yards. “As our summers are getting hotter, it’s important we have shelter available,” Mr Holbrook said. “The shade sails will be ideal for the yards – they’ll be out all summer and can be retracted in winter, allowing the ground to dry out so

the livestock are standing on a firm surface.” Ramps will be added to the new yards, with a slight difference to the facility’s original ramps. “We’re putting the new ramps in on an oblique angle, as we’re seeing an increasing number of big trucks coming in,” Mr Holbrook said. “It’s a trend that’s happening right across the country. Obviously bigger trucks can carry more stock, so we need to ensure the LMC can handle vehicles of that size. At the moment, when they back up to a straight ramp to unload, they block the road. “Having the new ramps on an angle will allow those big trucks to unload while keeping the road clear for other vehicles to move freely around the facility.” The Livestock Marketing Centre upgrade is expected to be completed in late December 2020, weather permitting.
