Feedback wanted on flood studies Community members are being encouraged to give feedback on two comprehensive reports which focus on flood mitigation and risk management in Wagga Wagga and the villages of Uranquinty, Tarcutta and Ladysmith.

The 40-day public exhibition period for the Wagga Wagga Major Overland Flow Floodplain Study (MOFFS) and the Village

Overland Flow Floodplain Study (VOFFS) opened on Friday 26 March. The documents give details on several years of flood modelling and community consultation to source local knowledge of flash flooding after heavy localised rainfall. The MOFFS and VOFFS do not relate to riverine flooding which was the subject of a separate peer review. Council Director Projects and Strategy Darren Raeck said it was important for the community to have its say about the issues and recommendations raised in the two reports. “These are two very comprehensive documents which consultants have compiled over a number of years dating

back to 2011 … essentially we need to make sure we’ve covered off on every aspect of overland flooding in these areas,” Mr Raeck said. “We value the knowledge of people living in these areas and will work with them to cross-check that what we have in the reports is consistent with the thoughts, first-hand knowledge and expectations of people who live there. “The reports include key recommendations for specific areas across Wagga Wagga city and the villages. “Making a submission to the Council during this public exhibition period will help shape the final documents.” Mr Raeck said residents could also

contact Council with their feedback or any questions around the MOFFS and VOFFS. Council will also have consultants available for one-on-one engagement with residents as part of the review process. He said consultations may be limited due to COVID-19 restrictions, however every effort will be made to ensure community comments are considered. “We understand there is a lot of information to digest,” Mr Raeck said. “We have uploaded an overall snapshot of the documents to Council’s website and this summarises the key points of MOFFS and VOFFS. Students from the Riverina Conservatorium of Music (RCM) performed for youngsters this week at Wagga Wagga City Library’s popular Storytime. The primary school-aged students performed two self-composed scores to accompany a reading of Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak and The Magic Hat by Mem Fox. Dr Harold Gretton, Head of Strings at the RCM, suggested the collaboration to the library after being part of a similar performance while working in Germany. “I was working at the Stuttgarter Musikschule, which is the Stuttgart Municipal Music School,” Dr Gretton said. “We performed in accompaniment to book readings at the Stadtbücherei Möhringen, the local public library. It was a great success, so I was excited to bring the idea to Wagga Wagga. “We’re thrilled the library embraced the idea straight away. It’s important our students get as many opportunities to perform publicly as possible and performing for children younger than themselves helped our students focus on the enjoyment they were giving, rather than their

own nerves. Seeing all those happy faces in the audience gave our students a great confidence boost.” Acting Manager Library Services Christine Bolton said the library had given the RCM a short list of books to choose from. “The RCM students chose Where the Wild Things Are and The Magic Hat, and the scores they wrote for each story were a lovely addition to the readings,” Ms Bolton said. “Our Programs Officer Wendy Harper had a couple of practice runs with the RCM students before the day, which showed in today’s beautiful combined performance. “We were thoroughly delighted to be able to provide this wonderful opportunity to our young local musicians and to also add a live music element to our Storytime. It’s been so successful we’re planning to repeat this collaboration each term.” Storytime is free, held at 10am and 11am each Wednesday and Friday during school terms. Bookings are essential. Plug + Play 2021 expressions of interest are now open Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre is on the lookout for young musicians to join its esteemed Plug + Play program in 2021. The program works with local, emerging musicians aged 14-25 to provide support and mentoring in the music industry. Civic Theatre Manager Carissa Campbell said after a pause in 2020 due to COVID-19, the Plug + Play program is back in 2021 with a renewed focus on connecting local musicians with professionals as teachers, mentors and business colleagues. “This year, the theatre is particularly keen to work with people who are already performing solo and are writing originals,” Ms Campbell said. “We’ve learnt that these are the people we can support the most. “Providing the business skills behind the music and making connections with the industry professionals who can take them to the next level, this is where we can really help.” The Civic Theatre’s Plug + Play program aims to build business, song writing, technical and

marketing skills in young musicians so they can create their original music, start new bands, get paid and make a career in music - all at no cost to the participants. “Being part of Plug + Play doesn’t cost you anything, except your time and commitment,” Ms Campbell said. “It was evident in past intakes that those who were invested in the process certainly got more tangible outcomes.” The program works individually with participants to deliver the connections and information they need to take the next step in their musical career. Applicants can also expect workshops with industry professionals, performance opportunities, technical support, professional photography and the opportunity to meet and jam with other young musicians. Expressions of interest (EOI) are open until Friday 23 April, with limited spaces available. Interested musicians can get more information and submit their EOI via the Civic Theatre website: civictheatre.com.au

The event will feature four shows at the Wollundry Lagoon Amphitheatre over the weekend of 10-11 April 2021, paying homage to the rock, disco and groove of the 1970s.

Director Community Janice Summerhayes said it will be the perfect opportunity to spend some time in the open air singing along to those classics which are still heard on the radio today. “People have been missing open-air live music events and ‘33.3RPM Live’ promises to bring people together and support local musicians, creative industry workers as well as other small businesses impacted by COVID-19 social gathering restrictions,” Ms Summerhayes said. “Set on the spectacular water’s edge of the Wollundry Lagoon Amphitheatre, this event is for music lovers in search of a relaxed, safe and fun haven to hang out with family and friends.”

COUNCILLOR COLUMN

At last Monday’s Council meeting it was resolved to place on public exhibition two of the most significant documents that Council will prepare in this term of Council. These two documents are: 1. The Draft Wagga Wagga Major Overland Flow

Floodplain Study (the MOFFS), and 2. The Tarcutta, Ladysmith and Uranquinty Floodplain Study (the VOFFS). These two studies have been prepared after extensive public consultation to gain first-hand knowledge of flooding and property inundation caused by localised storms. This local experience data was then used to

calibrate and confirm the accuracy of a flood model that was prepared for each of these studies. Once the model was calibrated against historic events it was then possible to model a vast number of potential storm events within the local catchments of Wagga Wagga and the villages to give an accurate prediction of property inundation during

0467 552 263 | councillor. kendall@wagga.nsw.gov.au

major storm events taking into account current infrastructure predicted development. The flood models then allowed Council’s consultants to look at measures/ infrastructure that may be built to help lower (or mitigate) those water flood levels thereby reducing to number properties that are in danger of water inundation in major storm events.
