MOOOOOVING AHEAD: Checking out works that are part of the Livestock Marketing Centre’s (LMC) $3M upgrade are LMC Manager Paul Martin and Proway Livestock Equipment’s General Manager Paul Gianniotis and Director/Designer Bill Thomas.
LMC upgrade all systems go The largest upgrade in more than a decade at the Livestock Marketing Centre (LMC) is under way. Temporary fencing has gone up and construction of some of the $3M expansion has started at the Bomen-based site. The works will help secure the future of the facility beyond the next 20 years by planning for current and future demands, increased safety and enabling efficiencies.
“It is exciting times for the LMC, with works on the expansion starting to take shape,” LMC Manager Paul Martin said. “The LMC attracts buyers and sellers from across Australia. These works not only have benefits to every one of those users, but also have huge flow-on effects to the broader Wagga Wagga community, especially as an economic driver.” The works include an expansion of the existing cattle yards, increasing the holding capacity from a nominal 2700 cattle to 5500, addressing both a current capacity shortfall and creating the foundation for future projected growth.
We’re now on Facebook!
To make way for the larger cattle yards, the existing calf pens will be relocated and a roofed area will be built providing a more versatile area for the selling of calves and store cattle. An elevated pedestrian walkway will be built above the cattle yards, improving public safety to the cattle selling ring, canteen area and amenities. To facilitate the works a number of minor operational changes are required. These include, changes to parking to separate light and heavy vehicles, changes to bobby and dairy calf unloading, changes to pedestrian access and possible minor traffic delays on
non-sale days. Signs and notifications will be in place to assist people during the works. The upgrade is one of the key elements outlined in the LMC’s Strategic Master Plan, adopted in 2016. “The works, and the broader Strategic Master Plan, will support the growth of the facility and ensure the LMC retains its status as a premier selling centre in south eastern Australia,” Mr Martin said. WWITS 2040 to kick start transport infrastructure Residents have until the end of June to make a submission on the draft Wagga Wagga Integrated Transport Strategy and Implementation Plan 2040 (WWITS 2040). Led by the City of Wagga Wagga, WWITS 2040 will be a document that all levels of government, agencies and industry can
refer to when planning for Wagga Wagga as a growing regional city. C4Wagga CEO Chris Fitzpatrick says it is an outstanding opportunity to lobby governments for the funding of future transport infrastructure. “The ability for the whole community to be
united as one voice to lobby government will be undeniably strong and we should all work together to ensure that the transport solutions and outcomes for the City of Wagga Wagga become reality,” he said. The Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga, Councillor Greg Conkey OAM, is urging everyone to make a
submission. “Thank you to the hundreds of people that have already contributed in some form during the extensive consultation process,” he said. “This is your last chance to review the strategy and have your say before it goes back to Council, so
make sure you check it out.” As well as looking at ways to attract and forward plan for potential large scale infrastructure projects, WWITS 2040 also identifies a number of short term actions that can be taken to create a connected, vibrant and active city.

MAKE US AN OFFER WE CAN’T REFUSE
For the next two weeks, the City of Wagga Wagga’s impound car yard is open for business. All makes and models have to go, with the 20 vehicles on the lot ranging from small cars to station wagons and utes. Expressions of Interest (EOI) from potential buyers who would like to snap up a cheap second-hand car are open until 5pm, 15 June. “All people need to do is make an offer on the vehicle they are interested in. If they have the highest offer at the end of the EOI period, then the car is theirs,” Manager Environment and City Compliance Mark Gardiner said. Potential buyers just need to bid on a vehicle that has been impounded by the City in the past 12 months. All cars are unregistered, have clear titles – meaning it is not under finance – and come with a bill of sale certificate. Purchasers will need to arrange transport for their vehicles as they do not come with keys. It is encouraged that potential purchasers wanting to register a
vehicle organises a mechanical check prior to sale. “If you think you might be interested in one of the cars, check it out on our website, and then head down to the lot at one of the viewing times to see the car first hand,” Mr Gardiner said. “If you are still interested after having a look, then put forward your offer.” There are also 40 miscellaneous shopping trolleys for purchase, which can be repurposed for a range of uses, such as in the garden or the shed. Money raised from the abandoned car and trolley auction becomes general-purpose revenue, and is utilised to support the delivery of services and maintenance of facilities. The cars can be viewed at the impound lot located at the Glenfield Road Animal Shelter on Glenfield Road from 3pm to 4.30pm on Tuesday 30 May, Friday 2 June, Tuesday 6 June and Friday 9 June. All cars, and the EOI form, are listed on Council’s website, wagga.nsw.gov.au/cars.

Extensive repair works to a section of levee at North Wagga were completed this week. Levee inspections carried out by the City of Wagga Wagga during a high river in October 2016 found seepage through a section at the western end of Gardiner Street.

To properly carry out the repair and prevent extensive vegetation loss, about 100 meters of new levee was constructed to the north of the existing levee. Electronic designs and automated GPS controllers to operate grader blades were able to profile the levee to exactly
match model heights and profile requirements. Compaction and fencing around the site were also included in the project. The repair was funded through the NSW State Government Natural Disaster Funding.

To mark the 20th anniversary of National Sorry Day, the City of Wagga Wagga and Aunty Isobel Reid have announced a new project to pay respect to those impacted by forced removal policies and work towards reconciliation. National Sorry Day is held on 26 May each year to remember the historical mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The day provides a chance for people to come together in the healing process for the Stolen Generations who were forcibly removed from their family and communities. “National Sorry Day
is a time to pay respect to and remember all those who have been impacted by government policies of forcible removal that have resulted in the Stolen Generations,” Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM said. “As part of the 20th anniversary and upon request from Aunty Isobel Reid, we are working to place a large rock cradling a commemorative plaque at the Wollundry Lagoon precinct. “The City is committed to working with our Aboriginal community members towards reconciliation.”
Once the project is complete and installed, the community will be invited to commemorate the unveiling of the monument by Aunty Isobel Reid and the Mayor. A highly regarded local Wiradjuri Elder, Aunty Isobel Reid is the chair of the Cootamundra Girls Home Corporation and has worked tirelessly to progress the recommendations of the “Bringing Them Home Report” that was tabled in Federal Parliament on 26 May 1997. Held annually since 1998, National Sorry Day was born out of a
key recommendation made by the National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families in the report. The intergenerational impact of the forcible removal policies on young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander citizens in the 21st Century has been profound. The commemoration of National Sorry Day each year helps contribute to a broader ongoing effort towards healing and social and emotional wellbeing for individuals, families and communities across the country.
