A little Aussie legend

Little Lucas Lacy is as true blue as footballs, meat pies, kangaroos and Holden cars. In fact, he just loves Holden’s V8 supercars and adored the kangaroos he saw during his first visit to Wagga Wagga’s Botanic Gardens' Zoo recently. Lucas and his mum Soo-Yin Dunn were in Wagga Wagga visiting family and friends while on holidays from their United States home in Virginia. It was Soo-Yin’s first visit back home in four years and saw it as the perfect opportunity for her to arrange a special citizenship ceremony for Lucas who is three months away from his third birthday. Story continued inside NEW AUSSIE: Lucas Lacy celebrated his Australian citizenship with family and friends in Wagga Wagga this week and also got the chance with his mum Soo-Yin to catch up with Mayor Greg Conkey OAM.

Concrete flows for levee upgrade Construction work at the levee upgrade site at Kooringal Road is progressing to schedule this week, with form work on several sections of the spillway boxed and concrete poured. A concrete pump towered over the work site and trucks were busy delivering concrete for both the spillway and

pedestrian and cycling pathway under construction (pictured right). The new three-metre wide path starts at the Monumental Cemetery at Cemetery Road and will eventually link up with the existing pathway at Copland Street. Wagga Wagga City Council Senior Project Manager Darryl Woods said both headwalls on either side of Copland Street, are poured and earthworks are well underway to join these cement structures with the levee bank. “In the event of a flood temporary barriers are locked in to the headwalls to secure the levee,” he said. “Two spillways are included in the levee

design; the first at Flowerdale Lagoon is completed. “Spillways are designed at a height lower to the levee height to slowly release water into a protected area in a controlled manner, rather than risking overtopping or breaching the levee in a flood event that exceeds the levee wall height." Stage 1 construction works are scheduled for completion by the end of the year. Councillors will consider a recommendation to proceed with a tender for Stage 2 works - from Narrung Street to Copland Street - at the 29 October Council meeting. Stay updated with the levee upgrade at wagga.nsw.gov.au/levee.

My day job is as a psychologist. Often at events once people learn this, it inevitably leads to questions and discussions about mental health and ultimately suicide prevention. While at times I would much prefer to

talk about absolutely anything else, it is part of the obligation of working in mental health to share information that can be useful. This article will briefly outline the steps you can take to help potentially save a life. It is by no means a comprehensive account; more information is available at reputable websites such as Beyondblue

and Blackdog Institute. Suicidal thoughts can occur in anyone, though it does not mean that everyone will have them, and the thoughts can vary significantly. For example, some people may have fleeting thoughts while others may have them for a long time, some will have strong thoughts while others not so much. Lots of people who have thoughts of

suicide will never act upon them. For many others though they will require help and will often need someone to assist in getting that help. This is where anyone can help. The first step is we need to recognise someone needs help. This can be learnt through what we hear, observe or learn about someone. The second step is being prepared to ask

clearly and directly about suicide. No euphemism, no beating around the bush, but rather asking “Are you thinking about suicide?”. This does not put the idea is someone’s head and it does not make things worse. The third step is learning what services are available that can be used such as those listed at the end of this article. Importantly, you

do not need to fix all the problems (often because you cannot), your role is about linking that person up with the help they need, just like if you came across someone with a broken arm. You don’t fix the arm, you help them get help. Those steps are easier said than done, and there are training courses available to help such as safeTALK or the online training

QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) for those wanting to learn more, but if you are brave enough to do those steps above, you could make a huge difference in someone’s life. If you need assistance please contact Access Line on 1800 800 944 or Lifeline on 131 114.

GARDEN GLORY: Parks and Gardens team Jayden Daniher and Stephen Walden planting garden beds ahead of the Family Garden Festival to be held at the Botanic Gardens on 4 November.

Fun for all the family at Botanic Gardens festival The whole community, whether green thumbs or not, are invited to enjoy a day out at the Family Garden Festival on Sunday 4 November. It is the final special event being held this year to celebrate the Botanic Gardens' 50th year. Wagga Wagga City Council’s Supervisor Horticulture Henry Pavitt said a garden-themed day is planned to encourage everyone to enjoy all the Botanic Gardens have to offer. “We have a busy line-up of free activities and there is something for everyone, with gardening workshops and demonstrations, face painting for kids, roving entertainers and five choirs, amusement rides, chainsaw art, stalls and pony rides,” he said. “The event also coincides with the Teddy Bears' Picnic and Wagga Wagga Society of Model Engineers' 30th annual invitation train run, so come along and enjoy a ride on the miniature train, too.

FAMILY GARDEN FESTIVAL

When: Sunday 4 November from 9am to 4pm Where: Wagga Wagga Botanic Gardens. Free entry. • Free pony rides • Pop-up garden challenge • Garden seminars and demonstrations • Garden stalls

• Free face painting • Miniature train rides ($2, enclosed shoes required) • Free kids garden craft workshops • Free amusement rides • Free roving entertainers • Primary school student mosaic competition • Tai chi • A variety of food and drinks

“Free workshops will be helpful for people looking to improve their gardens. Mr Pavitt said Jim Dunn from Council’s Parks and Gardens team will speak about making informed decisions on suitable trees to plant in urban gardens, Matthew McGrath will discuss weed management and he will give a presentation on landscaping. “Wayne Fox from Fox Rocks will be doing a dry stone wall demonstration," he said.

“The Botanic Gardens are in full bloom now and there is so much to see including the ever-popular zoo and also the refurbishments undertaken for the 50th anniversary. “The Tree Chapel and Shakespearean Garden received complete overhauls and we’ve installed new entrance signage this week. “We’re looking forward to a great day and we hope to see many people enjoy spring in the gardens."

SPECIAL CEREMONY FOR LITTLE LUCAS

From Front Page Lucas was born in America in January 2016 and received his Australian citizenship by descent six months later – but it was all just a paperwork transaction and there was no ceremony to celebrate. “I really wanted to do something special for Lucas,” Soo-Yin said. “So when I came back home on this trip to see mum and dad (Roz and Michael Dunn) and my family, I decided it was a perfect opportunity to do something to mark the occasion. “We were delighted Greg (Conkey) was able to

fit us into his busy schedule to conduct a small ceremony for us. Having the Wagga Wagga Mayor do that for us was fantastic.” Soo-Yin, who is now a permanent resident of the US and works at Norfolk as a Registered Nurse, said Lucas’s Australian citizenship would form an important part of his future. “This is his other home. I want him to have familiarity with Australia and learn all about this country where I grew up,” Soo-Yin said. “This is his first visit to Australia and he has learned so much in such a short time … we’ll be back in Wagga in about a year and I’m sure he can’t wait.”

Thousands feast on food, music & culture at Fusion

Despite some windy weather, more than 10,000 people flocked to Wagga Wagga’s premier springtime celebration of live music, food and culture last weekend. Fusion18 has been dubbed a roaring success, with locals and visitors from across the country experiencing food from 31 countries and music by headliners Mama Kin Spender, Oh Mercy, Henry Wagons and Woodes. The multicultural street festival also featured community performances, kids’ activities, pop-up shops and DJ sets – as well as roving entertainment from bubble-blowing unicorns, costumed stilt walkers and musicians that added to the unique atmosphere at Fusion18. “We were expecting a little bit of wild weather, but we still had more than 10,000 people,” Council’s Director Community Janice Summerhayes said. “Fusion has grown to be one of Wagga Wagga’s flagship events and is adding more and more to the 1.3M visitors to our city each year. “The entertainment was fantastic this year and the gardens were filled with people feasting on food from around the world on picnic rugs with family or friends. “The World Food Village has grown each year and we relocated the majority of it to Morrow Street, which was well received. “We would love to hear everyone’s feedback on Fusion18 so we can deliver an even better event in 2019.” If you attended Fusion18, visit wagga.nsw. gov.au/fusion and complete the online survey by 4 November to go into the draw to win CDs from this year’s headline acts. Fusion18 was presented by Wagga Wagga City Council and made possible by major sponsor Riverina Water County Council, media sponsor The Daily Advertiser, supporting partner Origin Energy and cultural partners the Multicultural Council of Wagga Wagga and Riverina Community College.

GRAND SLAM: Strategic Asset Planner (Parks and Recreation) Ben Creighton with the award.

COUNCIL ACES AWARD Wagga Wagga City Council has been recognised at the Tennis NSW 2018 awards presentation at the SCG on Thursday, taking out the Supporting Tennis – Government Recognition category. The award is presented to the Council that is judged the most engaged and supportive of tennis in their community. Wagga Wagga City Council was named the winner ahead of Willoughby, Cumberland and Wollongong councils. Over the past year, Wagga Wagga City Council helped the South Wagga Tennis Club secure $350,000 for a major facility upgrade and worked with Tennis NSW to implement the Book a Court system at Bolton Park, which allows players to book online and then access the court with a unique PIN. Council has also been working closely with Tennis NSW on a tennis strategy for the Wagga Wagga area and in the development of the Bolton Park Master Plan to create a regional tennis hub that could host professional championships. Director Finance Natalie Te Pohe thanked key Council staff for their work with Tennis NSW, including Strategic Asset Planner (Parks and Recreation) Ben Creighton and Strategic Recreation Officer Peter Cook. TREE TIDY UP: Trees around bus stops and school zones have been given a trim to improve safety for pedestrians and motorists. Twice a year the trees - like this one in Baylis Street - are lifted and shaped to improve visibility. If you have a street tree that needs attention, please report it to Council on 1300 292 442, online at wagga.nsw.gov. au/onlineservices or email council@ wagga.nsw.gov.au.
