New playground works start at Gobbagombalin Gobbagombalin residents should soon have a new play space featuring a playground design chosen by them, with work now underway on construction of the new park off Muttama Parade. The Wagga Wagga City Council project aims to transform the parcel of land that is enclosed between Muttama Parade, Nellywanna Street and Colombo Avenue into a fun space to play, relax and enjoy. Works and Playground Officer John Conlan said residents were given the chance to have their say on the design of the playground through an online survey conducted by Council in April this year. “We received a great response from the community, with 240 people – most of them from our northern suburbs - voting for their preferred playground design,” Mr Conlan said. “One of the designs – Option 2 – was the clear winner, receiving 79.1 per cent of the vote, so that is the playground we will be putting in over coming weeks, weather and COVID-19 Public Health Orders permitting. “The equipment will include an old-style tractor with modular features including a slide, climbing and other activities. There will also be a

hammock swing, a timber ‘teepee’ type structure, balancing timber logs and two spring rockers.” Works began at the site last week, with crews excavating the playground area to create a level pad in preparation for installation of the equipment. Concrete pathways have been installed around the playground area and on the western side of the park, while trees are already being planted around the perimeter and inside the park. “We have also built a five-bay carpark in the park off Nellywanna Street to make it easier for people to pull off the road safely to go and use the playground and other amenities,” Mr Conlan said. “Soon we will be installing seats and planting advanced shade trees around the playground, along with a garden bed nearby, a shelter with a table setting adjacent to the playground and a water bubbler next to the shelter. “The infrastructure and amenities have all been designed to make the park accessible for residents of all ages and abilities.” It is expected the irrigated turf will be installed over the entire park later this year.

TRANSFORMATION BEGINS: Council’s Works and Playground Officer John Conlan inspects the works underway to build a new playground off Muttama Parade at Gobbagombalin.

Get ready: preparing our pets for emergencies

WALKING YOUR DOG, THE SAFE WAY ...

Council is encouraging pet owners to be mindful of safety as the number of residents hitting the city’s pathways and trails increases during lockdown. Regulatory Services Coordinator Kathleen Bagshaw said it was important to have your pet securely on a lead and under your control. “We’re happy to see so many residents out walking their dogs, as it’s wonderful for their pet’s health and wellbeing,” Ms Bagshaw said. “We’d also like to remind pet owners of the need to keep their pet under their control always, from the moment they leave their house or car, until they return, as well as picking up their pet’s waste. “The reasons to pick up after your pet are pretty obvious; we share our outdoor spaces with

the rest of the community, so it’s the right thing to do. It’s also much safer, as dog waste can spread disease to other dogs, and wash into our drainage systems when it rains, carrying bacteria into our waterways. “Keeping your dog on a lead means the people around you can enjoy their exercise time. Not everyone is comfortable around dogs, and having someone else’s dog lunging across the footpath, or running around freely can be anxiety-provoking, not to mention dangerous. “Nearly every dog attack is a result of dogs not being on a lead or secured in their back yard, so please keep your dog on their lead, and make sure someone strong enough to manage the dog is holding that lead.” If you want your dog to be able to run free, Ms Bagshaw

Protect yourself and loved ones by getting vaccinated as soon as you can.

“It’s about working together with our communities for the best outcomes, and this opportunity is a collaborative approach which benefits both the club and Council,” Mr Faulkner said. “This is a similar arrangement to the one which was approved by Council back in 2018 for mowing services provided by the Wagga Wagga Polocrosse Club at their grounds, the recreation reserve, the hall and surrounding roadside vegetation at Euberta on Crown land, of which Council is the land manager. “So we’ve seen this process work successfully in the past with sporting organisations and the villages and Councillors agreed to endorse this arrangement with the Collingullie community.” Council will now work with the club to agree arrangements for the mower’s transfer.

what to do with their pets,” Ms McPhail said. “That time was a real eye opener and one I hope our community never has to go through again. “At the shelter, we saw how important the human/animal bond was, so we allowed the owners to come in, visit and spend time with their fur kids. You could really see the owners’ stress and anxiety disappear when they were together. “In the height of an emergency, stress and anxiety will most likely take over. By planning ahead, and having everything you need ready to go, you’ll set both yourself and your pets up for a less stressful experience.” For instructions on how to plan for animals, including packing your pet’s Grab and Go Bag, visit ses.nsw.gov.au and search ‘get ready animals’.

recommended visiting one of Council’s eight designated off-leash areas, provided one is within 5 kms from your house (under the current NSW Public Health Order restrictions). “Our off-leash areas are the perfect place to let your dog run, exercise and socialise leash-free with other dogs. If you don’t have an off-leash area within 5 kms of your house, just taking them for a daily walk on a lead is generally enough to keep them happy and healthy.” NSW legislation requires that all dogs in a public place must be under effective control by means of an adequate chain, cord or leash that is attached to the dog and is held by (or secured to) a person. R E A D Y, S E T M O W A T COLLINGULLIE GROUND

Wagga Wagga City Council will work with a local sporting club and provide a used rideon lawnmower in a collaborative approach to grounds maintenance at Collingullie. Council agreed at its 23 August Ordinary Meeting to gift one of its mowers due for replacement to the Collingullie Glenfield Park Australian Football and Netball Club in return for the club contracting with Council to maintain Collingullie Recreation Reserve. Club volunteers have been mowing the reserve for quite some time utilising their own mowers. Director Operations Warren Faulkner said Council has a regular plant replacement program which applies to Council mowers and a unit to the value of $8,000 has been identified as an ideal mower for the club.

Wagga Wagga City Council is encouraging all pet owners to make a plan in order to keep their companions safe in the event of an emergency. We often have a plan for our families and property, but what about our pets? If you need to suddenly leave your house – your pets need to come with you. Will you have everything they need? Animal Welfare Supervisor Julie McPhail experienced first hand the distress caused by emergencies during the 2019/2020 bushfires when, through her role at Council’s Glenfield Road Animal Shelter, she was instrumental in helping many residents stay connected with their pets. “During the fires, we worked with 15 families that were affected and answered numerous phone calls from people who had lost their pets or needed direction on
