Community celebration The sun shone brightly over the white sand at Wagga Beach as the smell of sausages cooking on the barbecue filled the air, while Aussie’s from all walks of life shared smiles with friends and strangers. City of Wagga Wagga’s Australia Day celebrations at Wagga Beach were again well supported this year with about 5000 residents turning out to celebrate all that’s great about our great southern land. Thirty-three people from 13 different countries used the nation’s day to become Wagga’s and Australia’s newest citizens. Wiradjuri man Mark Saddler ran two cultural tours, attended by about 80 people, focussing on the history and significance of Wagga’s Wollundry Lagoon and offering tips and hints on
bush tucker in the area. Free amusement rides, markets and the return of the Beyond Bank Entertainment Tent which showcased a range of home-grown talent guaranteed fun for all on the day. Official celebrations were kicked off on Wednesday with the Australia Day Awards at the Civic Theatre, where five outstanding Wagga residents were honoured for their contributions to the community. Dianne Jacobson was named the city’s 2017 Citizen of the Year for her dedication and commitment over the past 30 years to the Wagga Wagga Eisteddfod. Young Citizen of the Year was awarded to Isobel Cowell, the Ted Ryder Memorial Sports Award honour went to Anthony Paul, while Jim

Close to 200 people also turned out for a free picnic and movie night at the Oasis on Wednesday. “The outdoor screen meant that people could keep cool in the pool while being entertained with a fun movie,” Oasis Manager Maurice Eames said. “This year was the first time we combined the movie and picnic night for Australia Day, and it proved to be a big hit with local families.”

failed. In February we will see a report to Council on live streaming the Council meetings. Interestingly, it’s the smaller councils that are taking the lead in this initiative with many in our region already implementing live streaming successfully, some at a minimal cost with a couple of iPhones on tripods. Live streaming will open up the Council meetings to the vast majority of the
population who have never attended and assist the community to get a greater understanding of the issues, opportunities and projects discussed at Council meetings. It’s a small thing overall, but a step in the right direction. During campaigning and since being elected, myself and fellow Labor Councillor Dan Hayes have been active in our conversations with the community through our Facebook page Labor For Wagga and other social
media platforms (I just signed up to Twitter as @clr_keenan). Dan and I do a Facebook video summary of the reports before each meeting and use the page as a platform for not only informing but engaging with the community directly. Importantly, this is a public record of what we have said and done. I take very seriously the issues and ideas I campaigned on and got elected on. Behind the scenes, Dan and I are progressing on
live streaming, better youth representation, improving footpath connectivity and more. Community engagement is a two way street, so if you see an opportunity to contribute I encourage you to take the time and participate. Our community can only benefit with diversity of opinions and ideas.

up in a ‘no parking’ section along the service road out the front of the school, while parking will still be available further north of the school.

CH AT WI T H COUNCIL IN YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD A new initiative from the City of Wagga Wagga means residents will be able to talk to Council from the comfort of their own neighbourhood. Council is looking to engage with villages and suburbs across the Local Government Area. The Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga, Councillor Greg Conkey OAM, is encouraging residents to go along and chat with staff and Councillors. “We want to know what is going on in your backyard and by taking Charlie to you, we can better understand your issues and concerns,” he said. General Manager Alan Eldridge says staff will be on hand to answer questions and lodge requests. “Whether you want to have a say on Council projects, need help with online services or know about a pothole that needs fixing, we want to know about it,” he said. “You can drop in at your leisure for a quick visit or an in-depth chat.” With a bright yellow exterior and WAGGA number plates, Charlie will be easy to spot! Residents with a kerbside waste collection will soon notice some extra bling on their recycling bin. Over the coming weeks new stickers will be applied on the lids of household recycling bins as a reminder to residents not to place soft plastics in them. Soft plastics include plastic bags, bubble wrap and cling film. This also means recyclables in plastic bags are not permitted. All recycling products should be placed loose in the bin. Soft plastics should be disposed of in the general waste bin, or, recycled at a nominated recycling drop-
