Be a part of Fusion 18
Fusion 18 is the city’s premier celebration of live music, street food, culture and art – and you can be a part of it. Each year, more than 10,000 people soak up the vibrant festival atmosphere in the heart of Wagga Wagga with entertainment, fun activities and alleyway-style eateries. Applications are now open for food vendors, local performers and pop-up stalls to add to the sights, sounds and flavours from across the globe at Fusion 18. Council’s Director Community Janice Summerhayes said this year’s festival is expected to draw another huge crowd from the region and interstate. Continued inside
Vital link to Bomen set for overhaul A $1.2M road rehabilitation project on a section of Byrnes Road will begin on 31 July.
The works on a 2.2km of Byrnes Road between Bavin Road Intersection and East Bomen Road intersection will improve drainage and build a road surface able to withstand an increase in heavy vehicle movements at Bomen Business Park. Director Commercial Operations Caroline Angel
said the project will take up to five months to complete due to the extent of works required and to ensure access can be maintained for businesses in the area. “We’ve spoken to many of the businesses at Bomen and they have welcomed the upgrades to Byrnes Road; and also understand the timeframe needed to minimise disruptions for trucks and other vehicles,” Ms Angel said. “Only one lane will be closed at a time and works will be completed in sections, which will mean minor delays but we won’t have to close the road completely.
“There are two main elements of the works – a major upgrade to the existing stormwater drainage system and the construction of a pavement that can handle Higher Mass Limit (HML) vehicles.” The Byrnes Road/Eunony Bridge Road corridor forms the major access route to the Bomen Business Park and the site of the proposed Riverina Intermodal Freight and Logistics (RiFL) Hub. HML vehicles wanting to access Bomen or Harefield from the southeast of Wagga Wagga currently travel via the Sturt Highway and the Olympic Highway over the Gobbagombalin Bridge.
“Council has been working on creating a High Productivity Freight Route in this area for a number of years, including the Bomen Enabling Roads project completed last year,” Ms Angel said. “These works and the Eunony Bridge upgrade will complete the route, which will allow heavy vehicles to avoid the city and cut 18km from their trip.” The works are due to be completed by the end of the year, weather permitting. The $1.2M project is funded by Wagga Wagga City Council ($289,152) and the NSW Government’s Fixing Country Roads program ($868,168).
TRAFFIC CONDITIONS
• Works will be undertaken between the hours of 7am and 5pm with traffic lights or stop/go traffic control in place. • Traffic flow along Byrnes Road will be reduced to one lane under the control of traffic lights or stop/go traffic controllers, with access to be reinstated at the end of every shift. • There will be minor delays, however, there will be no full road closures during the project. • Local access will be maintained during works and staff will be on site to assist residents and businesses if required. wagga.nsw.gov.au/byrnesroad

Council funds 60 community projects worth $163,000 Sixty community projects will be made possible through Wagga Wagga City Council’s 2018/19 Annual Grants Program. More than $163,000 in funding has been allocated across seven categories, including $3704 to assist the Ladysmith P&C run children’s art workshops and $2500 for Landcare to host community outdoor cinema and barbecue nights to help promote the value of our local environment. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM said the
Annual Grants Program formed part of about $2.1M in contributions and donations provided by Council to the community in 2018/19. “The Annual Grants Program allows us to support a diverse range of projects that directly benefit our community,” he said. “It’s encouraging to see another strong response to the grants program and I look forward to seeing these projects come to fruition over the next year.
“Youth Led Initiatives was a new category added this year and five projects were funded which encourage youth in the community to develop, implement and lead their own youth-focused projects. “Several of these are focused around live music, such as the Bright White Festival an event for local high school bands and Strum 2019 - a music gig with a focus on mental health. “The grants program aligns with Wagga View, our Community Strategic Plan, and is
part of our commitment to helping foster a strong, creative community.” The grants are provided across seven categories - Community Health and Wellbeing, Connected Rural and Urban Communities, Arts and Culture, Local Heritage, Events, Natural Environment and Youth Led Initiatives. A full list of grant recipients can be found in the 23 July Ordinary Council Meeting business papers at wagga.nsw.gov.au.

PROPOSED AMENDMENT FOR DEVELOPMENT CONTROL PL AN
An amendment to the Wagga Wagga Development Control Plan 2010 (DCP) is on public exhibition until 25 August, with the community able to share their thoughts on the proposed changes. Council is currently undertaking a review of the DCP with the aim to rewrite the document due to inconsistencies and difficulties experienced with interpreting the provisions.
The rewrite will align the DCP with recent strategic documents, guides and directives. The DCP rewrite is an extensive project and due to the necessary timeframes, an interim amendment has been prepared to address pressing issues that need immediate attention. This amendment will allow a more flexible approach with development assessment as it relates to solar access, privacy
and setback controls. To read the amendment and make a submission, visit wagga. nsw.gov.au/public. You can also make submission by mail addressed to The General Manager, Wagga Wagga City Council, PO Box 20, Wagga Wagga NSW 2650, deliver it to the Civic Centre at the corner of Baylis and Morrow streets or email it to council@wagga. nsw.gov.au.

HISTORIC WOLLUNDRY L AGOON BRIDGE RESTOR ATION COMPLETE
Maintenance work on Wollundry Lagoon Bridge concluded this week. Supervisor Operations Lee Shoemark said intensive repairs were undertaken to restore the concrete handrails and repaint the 1850s landmark. “Twenty-eight columns were reconstructed on the western side where the mortar was soft and fragile,” he said. “Some of the parapet capping and bridge ends
also required repair as they had deteriorated over time. Both sides of the bridge were repainted in heritage colours to match the Beckwith Street Bridge which also received a makeover recently. “We’re very impressed with the final result," Mr Shoemark said. "The Wollundry Lagoon precinct is a beautiful part of Wagga Wagga and the rejuvenated bridge has definitely lifted its appeal for the community and visitors."
