WE'RE READY FOR RAIDERS' RETURN IN 2021 The footy might be off, but Wagga Wagga City Council is pushing ahead with new improvements at the Exhibition Centre and McDonald’s Park. See full story inside.

PARK PROGRESS: Wagga City Council Strategic Asset Planner Ben Creighton inspects the upgrade to ground facilities at McDonald’s Park this week.

More bus services for Wagga A major revamp of Wagga Wagga’s bus timetables will see more than 240 new weekly services added to the network in a significant boost to public transport services in the city.

Strategy Tristan Kell said the program would deliver improved connectivity to popular locations and see longer operating hours along key routes, particularly into the Central Business District. He said the plan is directed at creating a more liveable city in Wagga Wagga and with improved services to support journeys to work, health, education and social interaction.“Bomen Business Park will now have a new service for employees to get to and from work on a special scheduled and The new timetables will start on Monday bookable service,” Mr Kell said. 30 March after Transport for New South Wales identified Wagga Wagga as one of 16 “There are more than 2000 workers in Bomen who have the opportunity to regional cities to benefit from the initiative. Most routes will run later into the evening, benefit from this. A key initiative is directed up to 9pm, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at supporting access to employment for workers in our neighbourhoods - a major And for the first time in Wagga, most improvement for the city. routes will have Sunday services operating “It’s a perfect correlation with the recent between 8am and 6pm. ensuring that State Government capital funding will be supported by workers who reside in Wagga Wagga “More than 240 new service, are being introduced to facilitate shortened travel times and more regular services which are pivotal to Wagga maturing to a city of 100,000 people.” Mr Kell said the Wagga Wagga Disability Inclusion Plan identified access to transport for vulnerable people, who don’t have access to motor vehicles, as a number one priority. “The plan includes a greater breadth of hours through the day and across the week, providing services to travel to and from work, as well as providing trips after hours to support social activities in the CBD on Thursday and Friday evenings and also weekends,” Mr Kell said. “Having these improved services will also

change behaviour and reduce the reliance on private vehicles, easing congestion and improving access to services for our residents moving forward. The program has been highly consultative with customers and stakeholders and included network planning, minor infrastructure improvement, and aligns with key activity centres and growth. Council adopted the Wagga Wagga Integrated Transport Strategy in 2017 and this is a key outcome that is being delivered by TNSW in partnership with local government, local operators and the community. Wagga is the second city in the pilot program after Tweed Heads which was rolled out in December last year. The new bus timetables and services can be viewed and downloaded at busaboutwagga.com.au

COUNCIL ACTS TO LIMIT EXPOSURE

As the Coronavirus COVID-19 situation progresses, Wagga Wagga City Council is moving swiftly to protect the community’s exposure. All Council-owned outdoor recreation and play assets have been closed until further notice. Council’s open spaces remain open and available for public use, in accordance with the recommended social distancing and appropriate hygiene practices.

Council’s customer service desk in the Civic Centre arcade has also been closed, with staff still available by calling 1300 292 442 or emailing council@wagga.nsw. gov.au Earlier in the week the Wagga Wagga City Library, Civic Theatre, Art Gallery and Visitor Information Centre closed. Online library services remain available 24 hours a day from rrl.nsw.gov. au/elibrary Council meetings will go ahead remotely.

The community can watch the live stream on Council’s Facebook page, or at wagga.nsw. gov.au/watchlive Council elections, which were due to be held in September this year, have now been extended for 12 months. As a result, Council will conduct a Mayoral election in September this year, for the remaining year. For all Council's COVID-19 updates visit wagga.nsw.gov. au/coronavirus

We’re ready for Raiders! The footy might be off, but Wagga Wagga City Council is pushing ahead with new improvements at the Exhibition Centre and McDonald’s Park. The major upgrade at McDonald’s Park and surrounds, including a new exit on to Kooringal Road, increased seating capacity and an increase in the size of the southern hill, continue to progress towards a mid-April finish. Council Strategic Asset Planner Ben Creighton said many of the improvements had already been completed with the remaining works still on target which was set for the Raiders and Newcastle round 6 NRL game in Wagga on 18 April. Mr Creighton said the decision last week to cancel the Wagga game had no effect on the upgrade schedule. “We’re going full steam ahead with the improvements at this stage,” Mr Creighton said. As a result of the improvements, McDonald’s Park will have a 1450 increase in fixed seating capacity, taking the total number of seats to 2300 - an overall venue capacity of 12,000 and improved pedestrian and traffic infrastructure.

Mr Creighton paid tribute to the great work and ongoing partnership with Wagga Rugby League. “This partnership continues to deliver significant improvements at the venue which would not be possible otherwise, and is a key reason Council can continue to attract elite level content to McDonald’s Park,” said. President of Wagga Rugby League Mr Warren Barclay said he was extremely pleased with the works that have been completed and believes they will provide a massive benefit to the community into the future. “Wagga Rugby League and Council has a strong relationship which has allowed the development of McDonald’s Park into one of the best multi-purpose facilities in Country NSW,” Mr Barclay said. Mr Creighton said confirmation the Raiders would be back in Wagga next year for an NRL game is a great outcome under the current circumstances and demonstrates the solid partnership that Council has with the Canberra Raiders and NRL.

Mind what you flush… Please ensure you only flush toilet paper. If you’ve run out, know you’re not alone. Keep some plastic bags in the bathroom and bag up your toilet paper alternatives. Put this bag into the red bin. We appreciate your help in keeping the city’s sewage system flowing (not to mention your own plumbing).

Grieving in a strange time Wagga Wagga City Council crematorium and cemetery staff are working to accommodate families after the Federal Government announced a limit of 10 people at funerals, as part of broader shutdown measures designed to combat the spread of COVID-19. Administration & Client Services Coordinator Susan Dolphin said that all services were proceeding within the new guidelines. “We’re certainly not cancelling services,” Ms Dolphin said. “We’re an essential service, so we’re still accepting new bookings and will be proceeding with all cremations and burials. “Having the limit of 10 people basically means immediate family only,” Ms Dolphin said. “It will be very distressing to some families, but it’s critical that we abide by the guidelines and keep the community protected.” Live streaming is an available option, which gives additional family and

friends the ability to watch a service online. For each service, the live streaming channel is restricted by a secure login and password. Other options for families may include holding larger memorial services after restrictions were lifted. “We may be able to accommodate memorials in the future, where families can engage a celebrant or priest and have a service around the resting place,” Ms Dolphin said. “If we can help people feel that they’ve said a proper goodbye, we’ll do all we can.” Cemetery and crematorium gardens are open 24 hours a day, and while families were still able to visit, Ms Dolphin said it was important to keep in mind the Federal Government’s advice of not going out unless it was necessary. “If a special day is coming up for your loved one, you’re still welcome to visit, keeping in mind social distancing. It’s best to come separately from other family members,” Ms Dolphin said.

Cemetery staff were encouraging clients to make arrangements via telephone or email and avoid coming into the office directly. “Our reception area is very small, so we don’t want to put people at risk,” Ms Dolphin said. “Also, we have limited staff, so it’s important we all stay safe. We can do everything over the phone or email. If the line is engaged, please leave a message and we’ll get back to you.” Ms Dolphin said that staff appreciated the community’s patience, especially those who were grieving while dealing with the unprecedented set of circumstances COVID-19 presented. “Every member of our team has lost someone special – we understand what it’s like. Please be reassured that your loved ones are safe with us, and we’re here to help.” You can contact Council’s crematorium and cemetery team on ph. 02 6926 9310 or email cemetery@wagga.nsw.gov.au

While life has changed dramatically for many, staff and animals at the Glenfield Road Animal Shelter are going about their daily routine as per usual. Wagga Wagga City Council has restricted the public’s access to the shelter during the current COVID-19 outbreak. Animal Welfare Supervisor Julie McPhail wanted to reassure residents that the animals were well cared for. “Everything’s operating as normal,” Ms McPhail said. “The animals are cared for every day; staff are here to clean, feed, exercise and water them. We’re just not open to the public, but you can easily get in touch with us.” The shelter is still accepting lost animals, with guidelines on stray dogs differing to those on stray cats. “Cats are legally allowed to roam in NSW,” Ms McPhail said. “If you’ve found a stray cat, we ask that you follow the guidelines on our website. “If the cat is in good

condition, and isn’t feral, please return it to where you originally picked it up and it’ll go home. Don’t feed it. “If you’ve found a stray dog, just give us a call and we’ll meet you at the front gate.” Residents who have lost a pet are encouraged to contact the shelter. “We aim to reunite lost pets with their owners on the same day they arrive,” Ms McPhail said. “Having your pets permanently identified with a microchip means we can contact you quickly and minimise the time animals are away from home. A tag placed on your pet’s collar with your contact details is also helpful for community members who may find your pet first. “If you’re interested in adopting an animal, please check our website and get in touch. We’re available from approximately 8.00am– 4.15pm to answer calls.” Find out more at WE’RE PURR-FECTLY OKAY: Animal Welfare Supervisor graswagga.com.au Julie McPhail with one of Glenfield Road Animal Shelter’s well-cared for guests.

COUNCIL SUPPORT FOR LOCAL BUSINESS

Wagga Wagga City Council is collaborating with business and industry groups to help support local businesses manage the effects of Coronavirus (COVID-19). Council has also received support from Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack and State Member for Wagga Wagga Dr Joe McGirr who voiced their support for the local area. Council recently met with representatives from the Wagga Wagga Business Chamber, Women in Business Wagga Wagga and Committee4Wagga to discuss practical measures to aid businesses in need. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM said it was critical that the business community supported each other in these tough times. “These are unprecedented times. We’re taking a combined approach in the city to mitigate the potential economic impact on our local community,” Cr Conkey said. “Together, we’ll be co-ordinating information, encouraging innovation and promoting local businesses. “We’ll be developing a strategy in partnership with local business committees.” A private Facebook group ‘Live Local Be Local’ has been set up as a central point for the Wagga business community. The Facebook group will provide business owners with the opportunity to connect, share resources, offer advice and discuss ideas focussed on helping the community recover from the effects of COVID-19. The group will also include updates from trusted health experts, industry bodies, local committees and Wagga Wagga City Council. Local business owners are encouraged to apply to join the group at facebook.com/groups/ businessconnectwagga

We have proven through our response to the recent devastating fires that we are a community that looks out for each other and what we are facing now will test us once again. Please consider how you can support members of our community that are facing huge changes in their circumstances. I would encourage you to support as many local businesses in whatever way you can

with the restrictions in place. This is key to our ongoing strength. This week the state government announced that all local Council elections due in September will be deferred until September 2021. Council meetings have also been approved to move online and all meetings will be conducted via the online platform Zoom. We hope that you will continue to follow

Council meetings through the continuing webcast service. The decision to defer Council elections allows communities to focus on the task at hand and present some continuity in each Council in the area. This will assist in the massive rebuilding that lies ahead. This is not the time for politics or party pressures. All levels of government need to work together to put communities first. WWCC is being

responsive to the daily advice from government in this ever changing and unfolding situation. The business of ensuring our local area continues to not just survive but thrive is one that will be difficult but together we will overcome. Be safe and keep practicing your social distancing.
