We’re listening: Council kicks off 2022 Youth Forum Council representatives met with local high school students last week as part of the 2022 Youth Forum program, designed to give Council an opportunity to hear the thoughts and suggestions of our community’s young people.
More than 160 students took part in seven separate workshops which gave students a chance to speak directly with Councillors and staff.
Youth Development Officer Alex Osgood said the students, aged between 13 and 17 years, shared suggestions for Council to consider, including making improvements to existing facilities, developing new activity precincts, and broadening commercial opportunities for the region. “Students also suggested Council organise more activities for young people, like outdoor cinemas, colour runs, queer events and life skills programs,” Ms Osgood said. The students also used the forums to voice their key concerns. “More public transport, safe spaces and places for young people to gather casually, night-time activities for under 18s, youth mental health support services, and difficulty finding jobs were some of the biggest issues raised,” Ms
Osgood said. “We’ll incorporate students’ feedback into Council’s plans and strategies, ensuring young people’s information and perspectives are taken into account when planning and delivering infrastructure, programs, and services to our community.” Feedback from the forums showed 91 per cent of participants left the sessions with a better understanding of Council’s role in the community. “Students told us they really enjoyed being able to share their ideas and feel heard as a part of our community,” Ms Osgood said. “Having Councillors attend the forums was a highlight for many students, who enjoyed hearing their perspectives and NEW IDEAS: Students from Mater Dei Catholic College explanation of what their role entails. were among the 160 students who took part in Council’s Continued inside Youth Forums.

2022 Walk of Honour plaque unveiled A plaque for Wagga Wagga’s 2022 Walk of Honour recipient, environmental sustainability champion Dick Green, was officially unveiled in the city’s main street on Wednesday 25 May 2022. The Walk of Honour was instigated in 1998 to recognise substantial contributors to the community of Wagga Wagga. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Dallas Tout said he was pleased to see Mr Green become the 38th inductee. “This plaque recognises Dick’s dedication over the years to the pursuit of a sustainable future for our city and region,” Cr Tout said. “This has been demonstrated during his time working for Greening Australia along with his volunteering commitments with local community organisations such as Wagga Urban Landcare and Erin Earth. “He also worked with local Wiradjuri Elders and community members to compile the 2002 Wiradjuri Heritage Study for Wagga Wagga. Pop-up ice skating rink returning to our city centre this winter From front page Events Officer Emma Corbett said Festival of W was the evolution of Council’s highly regarded winter festival Lost Lanes, and would see the return of the popular outdoor ice rink. “We’ll be announcing more details next week, but we can reveal that the ice rink will be returning, bigger than last year, so we’re very excited about that,” Ms Corbett said. “We listened to community feedback after our 2021 event and one of the main requests was for a larger ice rink.” “The Festival of W ice rink is going to be 15 by 36 metres, which is 10 metres wider than last year’s rink, so there will be plenty of room for skaters. “The ice rink will be in place for the entire two weeks of the festival, operating from 9am to 9pm each day, so we’re looking forward to seeing everyone enjoying themselves out on the rink. “Tickets will be going on sale next week.” Council is currently looking for food and drink vendors and local businesses interested in trading
at the festival. “We have openings over the entire festival period and businesses can opt to participate on a single day or operate for the duration of the festival,” Ms Corbett said. “If you’d like to know more, or have questions, please get in contact with us.” Food vendors and local businesses interested in being part of Festival of W can find more details at visitwagga.com/eoi Council will be announcing the Festival of W lineup over the coming weeks. In the meantime, Ms Corbett is encouraging the community to mark the festival dates on their calendar. “I’d encourage everyone to follow Visit Wagga on our social media channels for updates as well,” Ms Corbett said. “Festival of W will ensure Wagga Wagga is the place to be over the winter school holidays.” For more information, go to visitwagga.com

Remembering the Stolen Generations: National Sorry Day 2022 Wiradjuri and First Nations Elders and community members gathered on Thursday 26 May at the Sorry Day Rock to commemorate National Sorry Day. The day provided a chance for people to come together in the healing process for the Stolen Generations who were forcibly removed from their family and communities. Wiradjuri Elder Aunty Isabel Reid performed a Welcome to Country, which was followed by a smoking ceremony led by Peter Ingram, accompanied by Luke Wighton playing the didgeridoo. Those gathered observed a minute’s silence in remembrance of the Stolen Generation Survivors, families, and the children who did not return home. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Cr Dallas Tout noted that the ongoing healing process was of great importance to the whole community. “Sorry Day is an important day for recognising and acknowledging the devastating effects which the forced removal of children from their families has had in terms of spiritual, emotional, and physical trauma,” Cr Tout said. “It cannot be underestimated how important the continued healing process is and that it is of great importance to our whole community.” Bringing Them Home This year’s National Sorry Day marks 25 years
since the 1997 Bringing Them Home report – the national inquiry into the separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families. The Sorry Day Rock, located in the Wollundry Lagoon precinct, was unveiled in 2018 to commemorate the children sent to the Cootamundra Girls Home and Kinchela Boys Home where they were taught farm labour and domestic work. Reconciliation challenge National Sorry Day is followed by National Reconciliation Week 2022 from Friday 27 May to Friday 3 June. This year’s theme, ‘Be Brave. Make Change’, is a challenge to all Australians — individuals, families, communities, organisations and government — to Be Brave and tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation. Reconciliation Australia is asking everyone to make change beginning with brave actions in their daily lives – where they live, work, play and socialise. A curated program of events will be held in Wagga Wagga across National Reconciliation Week 2022. Visit wagga.nsw.gov.au/ reconciliationweek to access the full program. SCHOLARSHIP SUCCESS: Council’s Aboriginal Community Development Officer Bernard Higgins is congratulated by Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Cr Dallas Tout for his achievement in being named a Cr Pat Dixon Memorial Scholarship recipient for 2022.
Bernard Higgins receives a Pat Dixon Memorial Sacholarship Wagga Wagga City Council staff member Bernard Higgins has been named as a successful recipient of the prestigious Councillor Pat Dixon Memorial Scholarship for 2022. The NSW Local Government sector kicked off Reconciliation Week 2022 on Friday (27 May) with a record three Pat Dixon Scholarships awarded to support the professional development of young Aboriginal people. The scholarships were established in honour of Pat Dixon, a Dhanggati woman who became the first Aboriginal woman elected to local government in Australia. Administered by Local Government NSW, the scholarships are awarded each year to an Aboriginal and/ or Torres Strait Islander councillor or member of council staff to undertake further study, professional development or research. Council’s Aboriginal Community Development Officer Bernard Higgins intends to use his scholarship to contribute towards the costs associated with attending the 2022 National Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) Conference next month. “It’s quite exciting to have the opportunity to attend the National RAP Conference in Sydney because it’s for professional development with regards to my role here at Council,” Mr Higgins said. “The conference brings together
people from RAP organisations large and small to collaborate, learn and act on reconciliation. “Council is working on its RAP, so being able to network at the conference and then bring that into my work to create a strong document; I can see that benefitting Council and the Wiradjuri and First Nations communities.” Local Government NSW President Darriea Turley said it was the first time that three scholarships had been awarded in a single year, demonstrating the wealth of talent coming through council ranks. “It’s incredibly important to support all the promising people working for the community through their local council,” Cr Turley said. “We need to back the next generation, particularly those individuals who help ensure that our councils reflect the rich and diverse communities they serve.” The recipients are determined by four trustees of the Pat Dixon Scholarship Trust, including Cr Dave Carter of Lachlan Shire Council. “This year’s Reconciliation Week theme Be Brave. Make Change calls on us all to tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation, so it’s really appropriate that Bernard is using his scholarship to further that goal,” Cr Carter said. The 2022 National RAP Conference will be held on 8–9 June 2022.

Language Café initiative makes new connections for participants
Wagga Wagga City Library’s Language Café has been holding a series of mini resource fairs to introduce participants to various local community organisations and government agencies and the services they offer. The Multicultural Council of Wagga Wagga, Australian Red Cross Wagga Wagga and headspace Wagga Wagga have presented at the series of information sessions to Language Café participants over the last few weeks. Zia Haydari, a social work student from Charles Sturt University currently on student placement at the library, is organising and coordinating the resource fairs. “The aim of my placement and projects here at the Wagga City Library is to make these services known to library users and to Language Café participants, so they know where to go if they need help,” Mr Haydari said. “I’ve been inviting different community organisations to come and talk about their programs and services at the Language Café. “It’s very hard for a person just to know about the services in the area if they have come from a different country and don’t know the language that well. “It is important that these organisations have that connection and the participants know where they can go as a point-of-access and have contact with them.” The Language Café program provides free classes for refugees, migrants or newcomers to Australia to improve
their conversational English skills. It holds three sessions each week during school terms – Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from 11am to 12.30pm – covering settlement topics such as health, renting or buying a house, shopping, food, family, money and job interviews. The Library’s Multicultural Services Officer Mahsa Nikzad is full of praise for the mini resource fairs, saying it is vital to have these kinds of resources available in our multicultural community. “It is a great way to inform people about the different services available to them in Wagga Wagga,” Ms Nikzad said. “I’ve received a lot of positive feedback from the Language Café participants who have found the sessions very informative and helpful. “We will continue to develop these types of programs in the future in order to share information about the diverse services available to our community.” The next mini resource fair presentation will feature Legal Aid NSW on Monday 30 May at 12.30pm. No bookings required. For more information about the Language Café, visit waggalibrary.com.au/whats-on or call the library on 6926 9700.
The Charles Sturt University (Wagga Wagga Campus) Social Work placement program at the Wagga Wagga City Library is unique in Australia. The program reflects an emerging trend in libraries across the world, including the City of Melbourne Library, where social workers are employed by libraries to provide referral and consultation services to support community members.
VITAL PROGRAM: Charles Sturt University (Wagga Wagga Campus) student and mini resource fair coordinator Zia Haydari and the Library’s Multicultural Services Officer Mahsa Nikzad talk about the benefits of the program during a recent Language Café session.
