FOOD, MUSIC AND MORE AT FUSION17

More than 12,000 people from near and far celebrated the many cultures that combine to make up our vibrant Wagga Wagga community. Last Saturday’s Fusion Multicultural Street Festival proved to be one of the biggest and best yet, with stellar entertainment and food from 25 different countries. Along with headline musical acts Ngaiire, Holly Throsby, Elki and Thelma Plum, The Bearded Bakers attracted huge crowds to their container-turnedkitchen where they whipped up traditional Middle Eastern dessert knafeh while busting a move. “Council's Fusion festival is now in its seventh year and the

2017 event will be hard to top,” Director Community Janice Summerhayes said. “Along with thousands of community members from all backgrounds, a lot of the festivalgoers were from out of town or interstate. “The atmosphere was so positive and summed up how inclusive and welcoming Wagga Wagga is.” Along with the food and headline musical performers, Fusion17 also featured stalls, interactive artists performing across the festival, community performances, paper artwork by Papel (Paper), the chance to get involved with the Global Angel Wings Project and more. CROWD OF THOUSANDS: Locals and visitors from all backgrounds flocked to Fusion17 last weekend to experience the entertainment, food, music and culture on offer.

Have your say on flood plan Residents are invited to have their say on the draft revised Wagga Wagga Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan. The draft revised study and plan investigates potential mitigation options for flooding from the Murrumbidgee River

in Wagga Wagga, and, makes recommendations on how the city should manage flood risks into the future. The study area modelled for the draft revised study and plan stretches from 5km upstream of Oura to Malebo Gap downstream – a total river length of 63km. On Monday night Councillors resolved to place the draft revised study and plan on public exhibition until 21 November, 2017, and invite public submissions on the

draft document. Residents can view the draft document and make a submission at www.wagga.nsw.gov.au/ waggafloodplain “Wagga Wagga is a community that lives and works on a floodplain, so it’s vitally important we are managing flood risks now and into the future,” Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM said. “The last Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan for

Wagga Wagga was completed in 2009. Since this time there has been two moderate flood events at Wagga, in 2010 and 2012, and a minor event last year. “As well as gaining vital information from these events, there has also been major advancements in flood modelling technology, allowing a much larger area to be modelled to a greater degree of accuracy. “A Detailed Flood Model Revision

was conducted in 2014, and this draft revised document follows on from this information.” Recommendations in the revised study and plan have been put forward by the Floodplain Risk Management Advisory Committee. The committee is made up of voting members, including community members and Councillors, and non-voting members, including third-party organisations and Council staff. Continued inside

THOUSANDS FLOCK TO FUSION17

From Front Page Fusion17 also proved the perfect event to showcase Wagga Wagga to its visiting Sister Cities from Nordlingen (Germany) and Leavenworth (USA). The Sister Cities' delegations toured various parts of Wagga Wagga before experiencing the multicultural festival, which kicked off with a performance by the Tintenfisch all-abilities band from Nördlingen. Ms Summerhayes thanked everyone involved who helped

make Fusion17 possible. “Wagga Wagga is made up 112 countries of origin, 107 language groups and 62 faiths, and it takes a lot of hard work to bring all those people together,” she said. “Wagga Wagga City Council is proud to make this annual multicultural street festival possible, along with our presenting partners the Multicultural Council of Wagga Wagga and Riverina Community College. “I would like to thank everyone

involved for their support, including our sponsors, staff, stallholders, performers and volunteers – especially those behind the scenes who ensured it was one of the best Fusion’s yet.” Each year Council evaluates Fusion to see what worked well and what can be strengthened for next year’s festival. If you would like to share your feedback, visit the “Fusion Multicultural Street Festival” Facebook page and take the survey.

Mayor puts domestic violence in focus More than a hundred men stepped forward on Wednesday and joined the Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM on his mission, to raise awareness of domestic violence by making a pledge of support to eliminate the issue. Cr Conkey was joined by members of NSW Police, the Australian Defence Force, business people, tradies, university staff members, members of service clubs and Council staff for a photo on the steps of the Council chambers. Police deal with a large number of domestic violence cases each week and while the rate of incidence appears to be on the increase, there is generally a low awareness of the issue in Wagga Wagga. “The aim of the photo shoot was to encourage men to start a conversation about the issue of domestic violence in an effort to raise awareness and reduce the rate of incidence,” Cr Conkey said. “It is important that local men of all ages and in all roles in our community speak out against domestic violence in our

community, as domestic violence is unacceptable and impacts widely on local families. “This was also an opportunity to show our support for the work being done by service providers across the community and other initiatives such as the upcoming Liberty From Violence community march to be held on 9 November along with International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and White Ribbon Day on 25 November. “Commercial operations staff have also suggested that we place anti-domestic violence messages on some of our fleet vehicles, a suggestion that I fully support to raise further awareness of this campaign.” If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, call triple-0. If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, you can ring the Domestic Violence Line for help on 1800 656 463. A range of other support services are available at Sisters Housing Enterprises Inc. (ph. 0437 138 296), Wagga Women’s Health Centre (ph. 6921 3333) and Women’s Domestic Violence Court Advocacy Service line (ph. 6921 6227).

Lawn maintenance will start at the Wagga Wagga Lawn Cemetery on Tuesday 31 October. The works are to help revitalise some sections of grass that are in need of attention and includes dethatching, aerating, fertilising, spraying and topdressing. The process will make the areas look slightly worse before the grass sprouts back to its regular lush, green appearance. “The presentation of the cemetery lawns and gardens is a high priority for Council and all visitors to the cemetery, which is why it is important to undertake these renovations,” Parks Operations Supervisor Michael Gleeson said. “Unfortunately, the process that is required to bring the grass back to its best, means some grassed sections in the lawn cemetery will look dry for about six to eight weeks. “After this time, lush green grass will be the result of the renovation.” Signs will be in the affected sections of the cemetery notifying the community of the lawn maintenance.

Wagga Wagga Regional Family Day Care (WWRFDC) is celebrating local children through a new vibrant mural on the Playsession Hall at the Botanic Gardens as part of National Children’s Week. WWRFDC worked in partnership with local artist Luke Vineburg to create the mural, which is a celebration of children and how the community can strive to ensure all children have the best start in life to create a better future for themselves and our society. “The mural represents a view of children’s lives as characterised by belonging, being and becoming, as well as children’s connection to family, community, culture and place,” Manager Wagga Wagga Regional Family Day Care Kym Stewart said. “We know that a child’s earliest development occurs through their relationships with family and Educators who care for them, and we are proud to celebrate the fantastic opportunities we provide that allow children to form attachments with primary Educators." Artist Luke Vineburg received funding through Council's 2016/17 Annual Grants round for Arts and Culture to create the new artwork on the wall of the Playsession Hall. National Children’s Week runs from 21 to 29 October and celebrates the right of children to enjoy childhood, as well as being a time for children to demonstrate their talents, skills and abilities. WWRFDC provides for all types of care requirements, including before and after school care, weekends, overnight and in some cases 24hour care. For more information about WWRFDC contact their office on 6926 9370 or email fdc@ wagga.nsw.gov.au.
