WELCOME TO WAGGA: Sydney FC defender Elizabeth Ralston with Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM during a visit to McDonald’s Park this week in the lead-up to November’s historic W-League match in the city. The Sky Blues will defend the championship trophy this year and are treating the Wagga match as an important part of their preparations.

Matildas star gives Wagga thumbs up Facilities in Wagga Wagga for the Westfield W-League match in the city later this year have been given a rousing endorsement by Sydney FC and Matildas’ nextgeneration defender Elizabeth Ralston.

“We came down today (Thursday) to promote W-League coming to Wagga and we’re more than impressed. The amenities tick all the boxes … and I understand future works are being planned which will add to the attraction of this ground being shortlisted for more top level matches. “We’re certainly looking forward to the Wagga match. It’s going to be an important part of our title defence preparations and we expect to have close to a full squad available for the match. “I’d encourage all young players and Ms Ralston was part of a Sydney FC football fans to get along to the match. delegation to visit McDonald’s Park this We’re taking it very seriously as part of our week to promote the Sky Blues’ 3 November pre-season build-up, so it’s sure to be a pre-season clash against Newcastle Jets. great spectacle for supporters.” “The surface looks brilliant and the facilities Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga here at the ground are equal, if not better, Councillor Greg Conkey OAM welcomed than anything I’ve seen at a regional centre,” Ms Ralston’s endorsement of the Wagga Ms Ralston said. facilities and also SFC’s pre-match visit to the

city to promote the game. “Football Wagga Wagga hosted their grand finals here last weekend and that was a great success … the pitch looks in fantastic condition,” Cr Conkey said. “The city is certainly looking forward to hosting top flight players for this friendly between Sydney FC and Newcastle Jets. It promises to be a great exhibition of football in Wagga Wagga.” Council Strategic Recreation Officer Peter Cook said Wagga is ready for the big game which will serve as a ‘test run’ for the planned Hyundai A-League match in the city expected in September next year. “McDonald’s Park is one of the city’s premier sports facilities and we’re proud of the way it is evolving with more improvements to expand seating and viewing areas planned to start soon,” Mr Cook said.

“Wagga continues to attract the big names in Australian sport because we have the facilities to accommodate the needs of national sporting clubs such as Sydney FC, Newcastle Jets and those NRL and AFL teams knocking on the city’s door to bring regional fixtures to Wagga. “It’s a coup for the city to have the best of the best, across all football codes, playing right here in our city for the benefit of sports fans across the Riverina.” Mr Cook said a large crowd was expected to support the W-League fixture and encouraged supporters to get online to secure tickets. Tickets are available at ticketebo.com.au SFC is planning to conduct clinics in local schools on Friday 1 November and stage an open training session on Saturday 2 November prior to game day on Sunday 3 November, kicking off at 3pm.

Weekly waste tip Broken garden hoses go in the red lid bin. Garden hoses are not recyclable, they consist of a variety of materials which are difficult to separate. However, a quick internet search shows lots of garden hose upcycling ideas rather than sending them straight to landfill!

Council pursues partnership with AFL NSW/ACT AFL elite men’s and women’s matches may be coming to the city early next year after Wagga Wagga City Council endorsed a proposal to host a gala weekend doubleheader event. Council agreed at its 23 September Ordinary Meeting to negotiate with AFL NSW/ACT regarding a potential two-year community partnership which also includes the NSW AFL Hall of

Fame dinner being hosted in the city in 2021, facility development, multicultural programs and talent carnivals. An AFL JLT Community Series pre-season match and an AFLW competition match could take place at Robertson Oval next year under the proposal. and hopefully bring elite AFL content and the NSW Australian Football Hall of Fame event to Wagga, which has the potential to attract some of the biggest names in the AFL to the city. “There is also a real connection with the Giants and the Riverina. Many of their players learnt their football in the region so it will be great if the Giants ultimately play here.”

The inaugural NSW Australian Football Hall of Fame event will be held in Sydney in 2020. As part of this community partnership agreement, it is proposed the dinner will be hosted in Wagga in 2021. The last AFL match played in Wagga was a pre-season fixture between Collingwood and North Melbourne at Robertson Oval in March 2016.

“They were the biggest part of the healing process for me, they gave me a reason to wake.” When Catalina McCaw lost her husband in a tragic motorcycle accident only weeks after their wedding in 2014, man’s best friend became more than a treasured companion. “They were a small part of my world, but I was their whole world,” Catalina said. “In one moment, everything was gone for me, but I had to keep going. COUNCILLOR COLUMN For many years the Wiradjuri people have been telling us Wagga Wagga does not mean what we thought it meant. For many of us we have grown up

believing it meant the place of many crows. Turns out though, we were wrong. Wagga Wagga actually means place of dance and celebration, and we as a community can be happy about this. We can be happy because it is good

to get things right even if it isn’t on the first try. We can be happy because we get to share in one of the world’s oldest languages. We can be happy because a place of dance and celebration is better than a place of many

crows. I know some will not like this, and some will reject it, because that is what happens with any change. However, I’m hopeful that our community gets on board and includes the mistranslation as part of our story.

0447 231 080 | councillor.hayes@wagga.nsw.gov.au It is also a good reminder that we need to be better at listening to the First Nation people of our community. There is much to be learnt by listening to the traditional owners of this land. Some of those stories, lessons

and history are easier to hear than others, but they deserve our attention. We are lucky that we get to do exactly that one the evening on October 26th as the first known public Corroboree in Wagga Wagga since 1868 is being held at

the wetlands by the Murrumbidgee River. It will be a night full of celebration, dance, song and stories… and that’s something to crow about.

Line-marking is expected to begin within a fortnight. READY TO RIDE (left): Wagga Wagga City Council is nearing completion on the Red Hill Link of the Active Travel Plan. FORGING NEW PATHWAY TO ACTIVE TRAVEL

Are you in need of a little bit of extra incentive to dust the cobwebs off your bike, and make the most of this glorious spring weather? Well, the chance to test out Wagga Wagga City Council’s shiny new cycling pathway could be just the motivation you need to step it up a gear. In an exciting coup for the wider community, Wagga Wagga City Council is close to unveiling the Red Hill Link of the city’s Active Travel Plan. “We are nearing the completion of the western section of the Red Hill Link from Yentoo drive to

the Glenfield Road roundabout,” Council’s Strategic Asset Planner Ben Creighton said. “Council will have a rolling delivery program of the different links over the next 18 months.” Tree pruning commenced along the Red Hill portion of the Commuter Cycling Network in August in preparation for crucial drainage works. “We undertook side drainage works to improve water flow over the pathway,” Project Engineer Gyanendra Regmi said. “If water was to pool over the pathway, it would eventually damage the surface – decreasing

the lifespan of the pavement.” Council is preparing for a second stage of work along Red Hill Link from Glenfield round about to Holbrook Road. “Our contractor is currently completing the asphalt surface,” Mr Regmi said. Line-marking is expected to begin along the impressive new pathway in about a fortnight. Wagga’s Commuter Cycling Network is expected to be completed in 2021, providing resident with 45 km of highquality cycling paths that will criss-cross the city.

SHINING LIGHT ON LIBR ARY'S FUTURE

As Ron Weasley so famously declared in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, “when in doubt, go to the library.” Last year, there were 180,000 visits made to the Wagga Wagga City Library, with a staggering 246,000 loans and more than 40,000 downloads of ebooks and movies made in just 12 months. The library also attracted 16,000 people to over 300 events ranging from Storytime, Tech Senior Classes and livestreamed events like the Sydney Writers Festival. “We know how important the Wagga Wagga City Library is to our city and growing population,” Director Community Janice Summerhayes said. “That’s why we want as many members of our community as possible to have their say on how we shape the library moving into the future
