Citizens centre stage on Australia Day
From a lamington baking competition to African drumming performances, the cultural diversity of our community was reflected in Wagga Wagga’s 2022 Australia Day celebrations at the Victory Memorial Gardens this week.
The free community breakfast and live entertainment were well-supported, with about 400 community members from all walks gathering to reflect, respect and celebrate with family and friends. To celebrate the 100th year of the Country Women’s Association
in Australia a lamington baking competition was held. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Dallas Tout had the difficult, but prestigious task of tasting each of the baked goods and deciding the winner, which was awarded to the Tarcutta CWA. A live sand sculpting demonstration was also a popular attraction on the day. The Citizenship Ceremony rounded out the morning’s event as 18 people chose the day to become our newest Australian citizens and to celebrate with family and friends. The formal ceremony was conducted by the Mayor. “Today we are celebrating the coming together of different cultures, which makes our community a wonderful and diverse place,” Cr Tout said. “Your past has made you the person you are today and will also
make Australia what it becomes tomorrow. You bring with you many traditions, beliefs, abilities and talents to add to the vibrancy of our community. “Australia welcomes you today with open arms and I celebrate with you as a fellow citizen of this wonderful country. I trust that your time in Wagga Wagga will be memorable – I’m sure that you’ve already realised what a great city this is!” The new citizens came to Wagga Wagga from Colombia, India, Iraq, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, the United Kingdom and the United States. The official ceremony concluded with the singing of the National Anthem by Sudhanva Venkatesh Iyengar, Sofia Vargas Illescas, Sophie Locker and Matilda Seal, accompanied by the Australian Army Band Kapooka.

Plug + Play on track to support young musicians
SOUND CHECK: Plug + Play participants Sam Campbell-McCrea and Emily Jennings are excited about the opportunities the new Live Music Kit will bring for emerging artists.
Wagga Wagga to host fresh line-up of Australia’s hottest acts in April Some of Australia’s hottest chart-topping music talent were in Wagga Wagga this week, ahead of our city hosting one of the regional legs of the nation-wide festival The Squeeze this April. Fresh off the back of their #14 and #41 rankings in Triple J’s Hottest 100 countdown, The Squeeze headliners Lime Cordiale were in Wagga Wagga to experience the city and check out the festival venue, Conolly Park. Brothers Louis and Oli Leimbach were impressed with our city and gave the venue their tick of approval, saying they can’t wait to play live in Wagga Wagga to thousands of local and visiting fans come April and encouraged festival-goers to snap up tickets today. “There’s something so fun about travelling and making a weekend of a festival like this. It’s really special and exciting to be heading to all these new places,” Oli Leimbach said. “Playing tourist here for the past couple of days has been pretty fun and it’s awesome to see where we’re going to put this (festival) on; it’s going to be huge.” Joining Lime Cordiale on the touring festival line up is a mix of national chart topping and future generation artists, including Thelma Plum, Client Liaison, The VANNS, merci, mercy, Teenage Dads and a local band yet to be announced will open the gig. Wagga Wagga is one of just four regional locations to host the national tour, presented by Lime Cordiale and Chugg Music. Wagga Wagga City Council has provided $13,000 through the second round of ‘Fast
Track’ event sponsorship funding to support bringing The Squeeze festival to the city. The 18+ years event is expected to attract a crowd of between 5000-6000 to Conolly Park, Bourkelands on Saturday 23 April 12.30pm – 9.30pm. Deputy Mayor Councillor Jenny McKinnon said it will have broad benefits for the local visitor economy. “It’s anticipated around 30 per cent of ticket holders will be from surrounding regions and nearby capital cities, which means overnight expenditure and employment opportunities for the community.” Ms McKinnon said. “It’s also great for our youth who’ve been telling us regularly that they want more live music events. Usually they have to travel to one of the capital cities to see this type of music festival and now it’s here on their doorstep.” Council Events Officer Emma Corbett said The Squeeze comes at a time when events in Wagga Wagga are picking up again after interruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “The calibre of music talent playing at the festival, helps grow our city as a highly regarded regional events destination,” Ms Corbett said. “We have some major events on the calendar over the next few months, including the NSW Touch Association’s Junior State Cup Southern Conference carnival, Gears and Beers, the Academy Games, FUSION, Stone the Crows Festival and NRL game between the Canberra Raiders and Melbourne Storm.” Tickets and further event details at squeezefest.com.au
TICK OF APPROVAL: Louis (left) and Oli Leimbach from Lime Cordiale and Deputy Mayor Cr Jenny McKinnon take a look around Conolly Park, which will host The Squeeze Music Fest on Saturday 23 April 2022.
Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre’s Plug + Play program will go ahead in 2022, after two years of COVID-interrupted plans. The program works with local, emerging musicians aged 14-25 to provide support and mentoring in the music industry. Civic Theatre Manager Carissa Campbell said after a pause in 2020 due to COVID-19, the Plug + Play program relaunched in 2021 but again met challenges of cancellations throughout the year. “The participants who were registered in 2021 have rolled over to this year, and with such a full calendar at the theatre in 2022, we think this year’s program will be more exciting than ever,” Ms Campbell said. The Plug + Play program aims to build business, song writing, technical and marketing skills in young musicians so they can create their original music, start new bands, get paid and make a career in music - all at no cost to the participants. “Providing the business skills behind the music and making connections with the industry professionals who can take them to the next level, this is where we can really help.” Ms Campbell said. The program began in 2019, with many of the alumni of the first intake already seeing great success. “It’s hard not to get those proud mum feelings when we look at where they are now” Ms Campbell said. “We saw new bands formed, existing bands had their original music heard on Triple J Unearthed and solo
musicians fine-tuned their business and marketing skills to secure more gigs.” To coincide with the 2022 Plug + Play program, Wagga Wagga City Council has announced a new Live Music Kit, which contains essential audio and lighting equipment needed to stage small concerts in outdoor spaces. This kit will be available for use to present live music in parks and public spaces throughout the Local Government Area. It will be free to use for a limited number of eligible artists and community groups in 2022 through an open EOI process. The kit is a professional quality resource that will take community-led performances to the next level. Council’s Cultural Officer Lauren Reynolds said the program has been developed from the strong demand to facilitate all-ages live music events outside of pubs and clubs. “We aim to encourage young people and create opportunities to participate in the music scene, building careers and networks,” Ms Reynolds said. “Not only will applicants receive the use of the audio and lighting equipment, they will also get the support of an experienced technician who will set up and operate the system, ensuring a professional polish for the performance.” Interested musicians can get more information about applying to use the Live Music Kit at wagga.nsw. gov.au/community/programs-andinitiatives/live-music-kit

With a name like Ebony, our Pet of the Week is sure to be as highly prized as the wood she’s named after. The domestic short hair is a sweet girl who is always on the move. Ebony (Imp No.: 566) is available for adoption for $239, which includes de-sexing, vaccination, worming, microchipping, lifetime registration and an ID tag. Contact our team at the Shelter on (02) 6971 4651 to inquire about adopting Ebony or any of her furry friends. FUR FACT: Lifetime registration can be confusing, but it is mandatory in NSW. Your dog must be Lifetime Registered by the age of six months and it is cheaper if your dog is desexed by six months of age. Your cat is required to be desexed by four months of age to incur the cheaper fee. R251000208
