Three, two, one … they’re off. A countdown led by the Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM, followed by a group of kids racing off on scooters and bikes signalled the official opening of the Forest Hill Oval improvement works, including the suburbs new skate park. More than $300,000 has been spent at the Oval in recent months to provide a new connected, family-friendly space for all to enjoy. Kids of all ages, parents and Forest Hill community members were on hand on Wednesday for the official opening. Charlie, Council’s community engagement truck was there giving residents the chance to chat with council staff, including the duty town planner – a new service now being offered on all Charlie stops. A free sausage sizzle was also on offer with Council’s City Strategy staff cooking up more than 200 sausages for the hungry crowd. The Forest Hill skate park and the overall oval improvements were based on community consultation held last year. LET'S GO: At the opening of the Forest Hill Oval improvements, which includes the city’s sixth skate park, are Mayor Greg Conkey with Forest Hill kids (from left) Mikayla Penman, 11, Bella Rutland-Kelleher, 7 and Mitchell Penman, 16. INSET: Six-year-olds Xavier Peters, Zander Peters and Beau Parr.
Wagga's own 'War on Waste'
Greener, more cost-effective kerbside service from 2 April 2018
From 2 April 2018 Wagga Wagga residents will be able to enjoy a more efficient, environmentally sustainable and cost effective kerbside waste service with Council tonight resolving to proceed with a new Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) collection service. Wagga Wagga City Council will enter into a minimum seven-year contract with experienced and innovative waste collection provider JJ Richards and Sons Pty Ltd, which will collect all three household bins (weekly FOGO, fortnightly recycling, fortnightly general waste). Kurrajong Recyclers will continue to process recyclable material, and Council will continue to negotiate a competitive tender for the
processing of food organics and garden organics (FOGO) material. The new service will feature an increased fortnightly collection capacity for each home, drastically reducing the amount of food waste needlessly going to landfill by composting it instead, and increase opportunities for homes to recycle. The new service will also see the return of an annual hard/bulky waste pick up service and expanded collection area to include Uranquinty village, Springvale (expanded), Lake Albert (expanded), Kapooka, Cartwrights Hill and a section of Brucedale. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM says this announcement is an important step for
Wagga Wagga. “More than half the bin weight of Wagga bins is made up of food organics, which currently goes straight to landfill when it could be composted,” he said. “If we keep going the way we are we would have to build a new waste cell every four to five years at around $4M each. “Many Councils in NSW have already adopted these changes so we aren’t doing this in isolation and are fortunate that we are able to learn from those around us. “Combine this with all of the feedback we have received from the community and I believe we are implementing the very best model.” Story continued inside

COUNCILLOR COLUMN
One of the decisions that attracted more commentary than any other so far this term was made in June regarding the request by PCYC for a $3M contribution to their new development.
I had publicly spoken out against this as I was concerned that it was not the best use of funds and outside Council’s role. There are many worthwhile organisations that do amazing work in Wagga which Council cannot support. For many months I constantly stated that unless all the activities currently being run from Bolton Park
were transferred to PCYC it would not have my support, and time and time again the feedback was that this condition would not be accepted. In the final days leading up to the decision, PCYC representatives told me they were willing to meet this condition. Once that changed, the project had my support as it provides two benefits for the community
outside of PCYC own activities and services. Firstly, it provides new, improved and increased facilities for many sports and activities that have been constrained in the small Bolton Park stadium. This has the flow on effect of saving the city from having to spend significant funds on another indoor stadium while one exists around the corner. For
councillor.hayes@wagga.nsw.gov.au
PCYC this means they gain a significant number of people utilising their facility and accessing other services and activities they run. The second benefit is that is now allows for a unique and exciting opportunity for the Bolton Park area rather than remaining as indoor basketball courts. Keep watching this space as the Bolton Park master
plan comes together and community feedback will be needed. The community now needs to call upon our state and federal counterparts to contribute their fair share to PCYC to ensure it can be completed.

Some egg-cellent spring cleaning is happening at the farmyard at the Botanic Gardens Zoo and Aviary. Staff are renovating the chicken houses in preparation for some new hens and roosters who will be taking up roost come spring. The renos include new concrete flooring, new netting and new turf in the farmyard area. The farmyard has been closed this week, and will be closed most of next week, for the works to be carried out. The rest of the zoo is open as usual, along with all the fabulous garden areas and playgrounds.

A new playground is coming to Lloyd and residents get to pick the final design. Three unique designs (pictured) are on offer, each featuring a different mix of fun play equipment, including slides, climbing/cubby units, balance poles, swings, monkey bars and see-saws. The playground will be in the new Lingiari Drive park and aligns with Council’s adopted Playground Strategy 2016-2036. In addition to the playground the park will also feature a shelter with table settings, bench seating, irrigated and unirrigated grass areas, concrete paths for better connection within the suburb and landscaping. For more images of the final designs and to cast your vote, visit wagga.nsw.gov.au/ playgrounds. Voting closes Friday 11 August.

From Front Page The annual charge to ratepayers for the collection service will be reviewed each year in line with the Fees and Charges Policy, but Council expects there won’t be any significant changes to the 2018/19 charge outside of the incremental increase of $9-15 a year as has occurred in recent times. This would mean that Wagga Wagga’s kerbside waste collection charge would remain amongst the cheapest (bottom 25%) in NSW. Council has also received a $1.03M grant from the NSW Environmental Trust under its ‘Waste Less, Recycle More’ initiative for the introduction of a FOGO service in Wagga Wagga. Council’s General Manager Robert Knight says residents have plenty of time to prepare for the new service. “There are still eight months before the changes will be implemented and a dedicated team of Council staff will be very busy in the lead up making
sure every household understands what they need to do and to make the transition as easy as possible,” he said. “This extensive education campaign will include a variety of communication with residents, ads in local media, school activities, community events and even home visits.” Information will continue to be updated on the Your Waste website as the final details of the contract are confirmed, and residents are encouraged to contact Council with any questions by calling 1300 292 442 or email waste@wagga.nsw.gov. au. Nearly 5000 individuals provided valuable feedback about what they wanted from their waste services during a community engagement campaign in 2015. Every contribution has been collated and analysed by Council staff. yourwaste.com.au
