New tracks open at Multisport Cycling Complex
From front page “We’re looking forward to delivering the rest of the project; in the meantime, grab your bike and helmet and come try the tracks out – it’s a great way to get your heart pumping, and the view across to the city is fantastic.” Parks & Recreation Assets Officer Rob Owers said the tracks cater for cyclists of all ages and skill levels.
“Whether you’re an avid cyclist, or just go for a pedal occasionally with your kids, you’ll be able to come out here and get active,” Mr Owers said. “These tracks are also a great platform for kids to learn the skills required to transition into cross country or downhill mountain biking.” The Pump Track is a short loop of rollers and berms for bike riders

and is designed to maximize your momentum so you can ride it with minimal pedalling. “Hold your arms straight, and pump up and down with your legs to propel the bike forward,” Mr Owers said. “Stand up for uphills and bob down for downhills. You can go as hard as you can however, given the design, you probably won’t exceed 30km/h. There can be about two riders on the pump track at the same time, with another four ready to go on the central start mound.” The Pump Track has an asphalt surface, which requires less short-term maintenance than traditional unsealed tracks. The life of an asphalt pump track is approximately 20 years. The Jump Track is a compacted earth track, with three corridors to choose from; easy, medium and

and the development application process had been short circuited by predetermining allowable development outcomes. This made a lot of sense to us and the effectiveness was well demonstrated in this example. Wagga Wagga Council could clearly see the advantages that the Qld government had given itself with this system. We prepared a paper for submission to the NSW State government outlining the benefits to NSW of establishing a similar system of identified development hubs in NSW. The NSW government was most receptive to the principles outlined in our paper and within a relatively short time frame the concept of Special Activation Precincts had been
established in NSW as a result. Our efforts ensured that Bomen became one of these precincts. The funding announced this week will ensure all necessary infrastructure is available to make the Bomen SAP build ready over the next year or so. Once this ground work is complete Wagga Wagga will be the focus of any company wanting to build and expand their manufacturing capacity in Australia bring both investment dollars and jobs to our region. Wiradjuri and First Nations Elders and community members gathered this week at the Sorry Day Rock to commemorate National Sorry Day. Wiradjuri Elder Aunty Isabel Reid performed a Welcome to Country, and was joined by other Wiradjuri Elders lighting hurricane lamps and observing a minute’s silence in remembrance of the Stolen Generation Survivors, families, and the children who did not return home. Councillor Dan Hayes welcomed the gathering on behalf of the Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga, Councillor Greg Conkey OAM, and noted that the ongoing healing process was of great importance to the whole community. “Today is an important day for recognising and
acknowledging the devastating effects which the forced removal of children from their families has had in terms of spiritual, emotional and physical trauma,” Cr Hayes said. “The City of Wagga Wagga is unreserved in its commitment to the Wiradjuri and First Nations community. Acknowledging the sacred value of Wiradjuri culture, language and connection to land and stories is essential to the continuing journey of healing and reconciliation.” This year’s National Sorry Day, held on Wednesday 26 May, marks 24 years since the 1997 Bringing Them Home report – the national inquiry into the separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families. The Sorry Day Rock, located
in the Wollundry Lagoon precinct, was unveiled in 2018 to commemorate the children sent to the Cootamundra Girls Home and Kinchela Boys Home where they were taught farm labour and domestic work. National Sorry Day is followed by National Reconciliation Week, 27 May–3 June, which celebrates and builds on the respectful relationships shared by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Australians. Reconciliation Australia’s theme for 2021; More than a word. Reconciliation takes action, urges the reconciliation movement towards braver and more impactful action. EMERGENCY CACHE AT MCPHERSON OVAL
A community initiative to permanently locate equipment to assist in an emergency has been built in North Wagga Wagga. The North Wagga Wagga Flood Cache at McPherson Oval is a volunteer sand bagging facility for residents to participate and collect sand bags. The facility is a collaborative effort between the State Emergency Service, the North Wagga Wagga Residents’ Association and Wagga Wagga City Council. President of the Association Laurie Blowes said he also hopes to see the cache site used as a community gathering place for use throughout the year. “When we first put an idea to the SES and Council everyone was very supportive,” Mr Blowes said. “It will certainly assist the community in preparing for an emergency and I’m also keen to see the area used regularly by the community … somewhere we can meet and get together on a more regular basis.” Council provided the location for the cache and constructed the concrete pad for the shipping container and bunkers for sand dumps. The bunkers are constructed of 36 concrete railway sleepers donated by Austrak which operates a facility at Bomen. The SES provided the 20-foot container complete with decals and fitted-out with shovels, sandbags and other equipment. SES will also supply sand to the bunkers in the event of a flood warning.
Council's Director Operations Warren Faulkner said McPherson Oval was chosen as the location of the facility primarily because it allows for excellent circulation and management of traffic arriving to collect sand bags. “It is tucked neatly in beside the screening hedge along William Street and is close to a power source and street light,” Mr Faulkner said. “This has been a collaborative effort between Council, the North Wagga Wagga Residents’ Association, and the SES which has resulted in a community initiative being brought to fruition.”
ONE TREE FOR ME: FREE SEEDLINGS FOR ALL RESIDENTS Wagga Wagga City Council will be giving away free seedlings as part of ‘One Tree for Me’, a new initiative encouraging residents to plant native trees, shrubs and groundcovers in their backyards to help improve biodiversity and combat the urban heat island effect. The first One Tree for Me seedling giveaway will take place on World Environment Day, Saturday 5 June 2021, from 9.30am at ErinEarth in Turvey Park. Environmental Education Officer Alice Kent said One Tree for Me was partly prompted by community feedback to Council’s Biodiversity Strategy: Maldhangilanha. “We received a lot of requests for free seedlings,” Ms Kent said. “We created the initiative to address that demand, and we’re aiming to get at least one plant in the ground for every Wagga Wagga LGA resident over the next six years – which is around 65,000 seedlings. “We’ll achieve this through community planting events on public land, providing seedlings to schools through Schools Tree Day, and through seedling giveaways.” No backyard too small Ms Kent said Council was hoping the community would take advantage of the free seedlings, no matter what size their backyard. “We have a mix of native trees, shrubs and ground covers, so all backyard sizes are catered for,” Ms Kent said. “We’ll give you information about your seedlings, what they’ll look like fully grown, as well as what kind of wildlife they’ll attract and how they’ll
contribute to the biodiversity in your backyard and our region. “Planting is incredibly rewarding. Sitting back and seeing all the different birds and little creatures visiting your garden is one of life’s simple pleasures.” Backyards as stepping stones Ms Kent said backyards connect our natural bushland areas, acting as stepping stones for animals and birds. “For example, birds travelling from Willans Hill to Pomingalarna Reserve will use backyards along the way to stop, refuel and rest before moving onwards,” Ms Kent said. “Planting will help provide smaller habitats for birds and bugs, and create little ecosystems. “Residents control a large portion of our region’s land – if you look at Google maps and see all those backyards, it’s an enormous area. Every single plant you can put into your backyard will help.” Combat urban heat An urban heat island is a metropolitan area that's a lot warmer than the rural areas surrounding it. Ms Kent said increasing our region’s canopy and vegetation coverage will help mitigate the impacts of urban heat. “Buildings, roads and footpaths all create heat by absorbing the sun’s rays. The more we can plant, the cooler we can make our suburbs. “One Tree for Me is a great opportunity for you to start turning your backyard into a beautiful ecosystem, benefitting our wildlife and helping to keep your place cooler.”
