FLOODY HELL: These images from across October show the full extent of the damage caused by the recent flood event and record rainfall across the Local Government Area.
Flood’s flow-on effects Recovery mode for the City of Wagga Wagga is in full swing following the recent minor flood event. While the Murrumbidgee River water level has dropped and the rain events have eased, crews are now faced with the enormous task of cleaning up and tending to the mess that has been left behind. This includes extensive road repairs on urban and rural roads, clean up at the Wagga Wagga Beach and catching up on the spring mowing program. The Local Government Area’s (LGA) 2300km road network has been severely impacted – particularly roads outside the urban area.
“Central Island Road in the west of the LGA is 14kms long, about 1km of the road has been completely washed away and about another 6kms is very heavily potholed,” Supervisor Pavement Operations Andrew Mason said. “Weir Road at the western end of Central Island Road spent four weeks underwater and has extensive shoulder damage along significant lengths of it. “Mundowy Lane, which is the only river crossing between Wagga Wagga and Narrandera, spent six weeks underwater. Emergency repairs have been done on this road and it is now open to traffic, but Council will continue to monitor this road for any failures

over the next three to four months.” About 80 per cent of the major sealed network has already been assessed by City of Wagga Wagga technical staff. These roads were high priority as they are high speed, have a large amount of traffic and include more heavy vehicles. Assessment will next move on to minor, local and unsealed roads. Council is asking residents to remain patient as the repairs are being worked through. “Due to the extensive damage it will be months before some roads are fully repaired and made safe again for traffic,” Mr Mason said.
Continued inside
Continuing impacts from flood event • A total of 20 roads in the region remain closed to traffic • A number of roads still have water over the road (open to traffic) • The following major roads in the sealed network are open, but have suffered significant damage and program repairs have been scheduled: Mates Gully Road, Tumbarumba Road, Lockhart Road, Coolamon Road, Elizabeth Avenue (Forest Hill), Inglewood Road, Lloyd Road and Mangoplah Road
• Eunony Bridge Road project is expected to be completed by the end of 2016. The extented timeline allows for saturated subgrade to dry out and Byrnes Road project, which was further advanced, to be completed • Spring mowing program impacted due to saturation levels. Grounds are being mowed and sprayed when weather allows • Wagga Beach clean up expected to run into December
