A GOOD TIME FOR THE TOUGH TIMES

If it wasn’t going to rain, then a lazy Sunday afternoon toe tapping to the tunes of local performers at a music concert was one way to escape the tough times for a few hours. A Tough Gig was hosted by Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM, who was delighted with the wider community’s response to the event attended by about 2000 people. The concert and picnic in the park on Sunday was a free community event which sent a message to drought-affected farmers that people do care. Donations made to the NSW Farmers’ drought relief effort totalled $4088.60 which was an added bonus to the day.

FRESH LOOK: Tourism Partner Program members Alisha and Joel Smellie from the Quality Inn Carriage House take a look at the new visitor guide.

COUNCIL, BUSINESS WORK TOGETHER FOR NEW-LOOK VISITOR GUIDE Continued from front page “Tourism is a vital part of Wagga Wagga’s economy, with visitors spending about $370M in local businesses each year. Products such as the Visitor Guide and other key tourism campaigns and major events throughout the year help us reach, and even grow, this contribution,” Mrs Summerhayes said. “Spring is one of the busiest times for tourism in the region, with the guide’s release coinciding with the October long weekend, which sees a huge influx of visitors to our city especially through the ever-growing Gears and Beers festival. “Wagga Wagga City Council is also about to launch its spring tourism campaign, Devour, which showcases the best local produce and eat + drink operators and runs for the month of October. “Council’s new children’s festival Spring Jam will take over the Botanic Gardens on Saturday 6 October, and of course, the always entertaining multicultural street festival Fusion18 will see thousands of people fill the civic centre forecourt and Victory Memorial Gardens on

Saturday 20 October.” In addition, Wagga Wagga can also look forward to tourism drivers in the future thanks to a number of recently announced events and projects, including a National Rugby League match in May next year and the $9.2M cycling upgrade at Pomingalarna Reserve. “Tourism is going from strength to strength in Wagga Wagga + Surrounds with some very exciting times ahead,” Mrs Summerhayes said. Copies of the 2018/19 Wagga Wagga + Surrounds Visitor Guide are available at the Wagga Wagga Visitor Information Centre on Tarcutta Street and online at visitwagga.com Copies of the guide are also distributed to information centres across the country, including Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra. In the past, requests to stock Wagga Wagga + Surrounds visitor guides have also come as far as South Australia and Queensland. Having copies available across the country helps promote Wagga Wagga + Surrounds to potential visitors and allows them to make itineraries before arriving.

WAGGA'S QANTAS PILOT ACADEMY BID 'UNIQUE AND POWERFUL' Wagga Wagga’s future as an aviation centre of excellence remains bright despite the announcement on Thursday the first Qantas Group Pilot Academy will be constructed in Toowoomba. Wagga Wagga City Council General Manager Peter Thompson congratulated Toowoomba Regional Council on its successful submission and quickly focused on the merit of Wagga Wagga to provide high quality pilot training. “Well done and congratulations to Toowoomba which has secured this facility,” Mr Thompson said. Mr Thompson said the proposal developed by Wagga Wagga City Council and Charles Sturt University (CSU) was “unique and powerful” and while Wagga has not been chosen by Qantas for today’s announcement, he is confident the proposal itself will be attractive to the industry. “What we offered was something different. It was a very powerful bid,” Mr Thompson

said. “Wagga Wagga has a compelling case to host this type of facility in line with our partnership with CSU and the infrastructure already in place at Wagga Airport.” Mr Thompson said there was now an even greater opportunity to capitalise on a global shortage of pilots, particularly in the Asia Pacific region, which may ultimately work in Wagga Wagga’s favour as a preferred option. “We have an airport that has capacity, we have very clear blue skies with few restrictions, we have a university that has lecturing space and accommodation that can house an academy and provide tertiary qualifications in addition to pilot qualifications. We’ll be pursuing that.” Mr Thompson said Council will continue to discuss its proposal exclusively with Qantas. “If we are ultimately not chosen for the second Qantas site then we will turn to pursuing new opportunities with the

support and backing of the local business community,” Mr Thompson said. “The community has given us a loud message they want growth in the Wagga Wagga area. “That means new business, as opposed to reproducing old business, and this is a great example of an opportunity to do that.” CSU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Andrew Vann congratulated Wagga Wagga City Council on the bid process and re-affirmed its support to pursue pilot education and training. “We wholeheartedly support Wagga Wagga looking for new opportunities and believe we have strong resources and facilities to support that,” Professor Vann said. “Wagga Wagga has so much to offer this industry. The combination of the city’s aviation facilities and tertiary education opportunities through CSU provides an attractive option for pilot training in a leading regional city.”

Wagga Wagga is the best city in rural and regional New South Wales, if not Australia. So says Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM who passionately endorsed the city’s high profile as a leading regional centre after his re-election on Monday night as Mayor for the next two years. “Our city is leading the way in so many areas. We have achieved so much and there’s more to come,” Cr Conkey said. “This is a great city and being the Mayor is a great honour. Wagga Wagga is the best city in rural and regional NSW, if not the best city in rural and regional Australia. “I was humbled to be elected Mayor two years ago and now for another two years. “We’re a diverse Council. We have

a lot of skills on this council and I’m very proud to get the opportunity to lead it.” Cr Conkey said the Riverina Intermodal Freight and Logistics Hub (RiFL) was going to be the economic driver for the city’s growth in years to come. Cr Dallas Tout agreed that Wagga Wagga was well on track to expand and deliver economic opportunity. Cr Tout was re-elected as Deputy Mayor on Monday night. “The whole council are the leaders of the community and it’s great to be part of the team … I’m looking forward to it,” Cr Tout said. “I believe we have done an outstanding job over the last two years. There’s plenty which is going to happen in this city in the next two years … exciting times are ahead for the city.”

600 seats installed as new stadium progresses

The installation of tiered seating for over 600 spectators is the latest milestone in the construction of Wagga Wagga’s $9.2M multi-purpose stadium at the Exhibition Centre. Project Manager Tom Lemerle said work on the stadium, which will host netball, basketball,

volleyball and futsal, is proceeding quickly this month. “The roof on the main stadium and the administration area is now complete and we’ve started on the installation of electricity, air-conditioning and fire sprinkler services," he said. “The last sections of concrete

are being poured, glass is being installed to internal and external windows and the stadium seating is nearly finished. “The project is proceeding on budget and is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.”

Wagga Wagga in line for Sheffield Shield match The likelihood of Sheffield Shield cricket returning to Wagga Wagga this season has taken a significant step forward. Wagga Wagga City Council resolved at its 24 September meeting to enter into an agreement with Cricket NSW to host Shield and Futures League matches in the city. Council is having discussions with Cricket NSW to determine matches and
