From front page As part of his ceremonial duties as Reviewing Officer, the Mayor received formal salutes from the troops on parade, handed out awards to high achieving recruits, and gave a keynote address. “It was an honour and a privilege to have been invited to ‘The Home of the Soldier’ to take part in this important occasion marking the first great milestone in the careers of Australia’s newest soldiers,” Cr Tout said. “I was very impressed by their high standard of presentation and drill on parade and was pleased to be able to congratulate the prize winners on their achievements. “It was also wonderful to see the family and friends who made the trip to Wagga Wagga to watch their loved ones on the parade ground.” March Out parades at Kapooka always feature a Reviewing Officer, usually a senior military officer. Civilians, usually Ministers of the Department of Defence or Veterans’ Affairs have acted as reviewing officers, but the Mayor of Wagga Wagga has not acted in this role in the memory of current Kapooka staff. BLOCKBUSTER: Thousands of NRL fans packed into Wagga Wagga's McDonalds Park to see the clash between the Canberra Raiders and Newcastle Knights in 2021.
Funding helps Wagga Wagga host NRL clash Excitement is building across Wagga Wagga and the surrounding region for the upcoming round 5 National Rugby League (NRL) blockbuster between the Canberra Raiders and Melbourne Storm at McDonalds Park on Saturday 9 April 2022. Member of the Legislative Council Wes Fang said the NRL clash is being backed by the NSW Government’s Regional Events Acceleration Fund which supports events that boost local economies. “I’m delighted that the $100,000 grant from the Regional Events Acceleration Fund has made it possible for Wagga Wagga to host such an iconic match between the Canberra Raiders and Melbourne Storm,” Mr Fang said. “We know hosting major events in regional areas attracts a large number of visitors and they will spend money in local shops, grab a bite to eat at a local restaurant or café, boosting regional businesses and economies. “Since its inception, the Regional Events Acceleration Fund has supported more than 80 events and attracted more than one million visitors to the regions.” The NSW Government’s Regional Events
Acceleration Fund supports the social and economic recovery of regional communities who have been affected by floods, droughts, bushfires and the pandemic. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Cr Dallas Tout said the grant will contribute to the cost of hosting this major event for the city and region. “The funding we’ve received from the NSW Government plays an important role in bringing great events like next month’s NRL match to Wagga Wagga,” Cr Tout said. “We’re looking forward to seeing the Raiders return for their third game in four years and to welcoming the Melbourne Storm to our city. “The event is a fantastic opportunity to bring visitors from across the region and beyond to our city, which will create a positive impact on the local economy and local business owners. “Don’t forget, when the game’s over, you can head down to the Victory Memorial Gardens and join the amazing sights, tastes and sounds of our FUSION22 multicultural festival.” The Raiders v Storm game kicks off at McDonalds Park in Wagga Wagga at 3pm on 9 April 2022. A new online home for young people Wagga Wagga City Council launched an inclusive and accessible online space for our region’s young people this week. The Youth of Wagga webpage has been designed as a place for young people to discover new opportunities and programs, events, competitions, and local support services, as well as share ideas with each other. Youth Development Officer Alex Osgood (pictured) said the page had been created to help bridge a gap across youth services and information. “There’s so much information out there, with various programs, initiatives and support services listed in different places, it can be overwhelming,” Ms Osgood said. “One of the most common requests we received in previous engagements with young people was for a central youth-specific site to be developed. “We wanted to make the information easily consumable and the Youth of Wagga platform provides tailored information for young people,
their carers, and people who work and volunteer with young people.” Ms Osgood said the page also provided a forum for young people to tell Council about the issues that are important to them. “The Youth of Wagga site has an open ideas board that’s not tied to any consultation or strategy; it’s available yearround for use anytime to share your ideas,” Ms Osgood said. “You can comment and like each other’s ideas as well; it’s a safe and moderated Are you 12 to 25 place. New direct air service to Brisbane takes off! Wagga Wagga now has regular airline services flying direct to Brisbane, with the new QantasLink flights taking off for the first time this week. The carrier will operate three weekly return services between Wagga Wagga and the Queensland capital with its 74 seat, Q400 turboprop aircraft. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Cr Dallas Tout said the addition of these new flights is a boost to the city’s connectivity and liveability. “One of the key things which attracts people to regional areas is how connected they are to capital centres, and now we have direct flights to Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane,” Cr Tout said. “For our residents and future residents, the number and frequency of flights means more options for travelling on holidays or for family reasons, and when people have the choice, they have a better lifestyle. “For Queenslanders, it makes it easier to access the wonderful tourism destinations and events we have in the Riverina.” The increased connectivity to southern Queensland is also expected to deliver broad economic benefits to Wagga Wagga and the surrounding region. Cr Tout said having a new flight route with no transfers or stopovers has the potential to open up new markets by making it more accessible and easier to get to and from the destination. “It means more reliability and ease of access, which is a big attractor for business,” Cr Tout said. “Wagga businesses can be more confident and have greater access to doing business in southern Queensland, and vice versa for our northern neighbours.” The return direct flights between the two cities will operate on Mondays, Fridays and Sundays.

Art Gallery Director Dr Lee-Anne Hall said there was strong interest in the program from the region’s artistic community. “We had an extremely competitive round of applications for both exhibitions and residencies,” Dr Hall said. “We’re thrilled to announce the 2022 line-up of artists, some of whom who are emerging, while others are mid-career and re-emerging in their practice after many years.” The program focuses on supporting the development of regional artists, providing them with opportunities for mentoring. For artists in residence this support includes a $2,000 stipend during their residency. Wagga Wagga portrait painter Leigh Hewitt (pictured) said he will spend his month-long residency preparing large portraits for an upcoming exhibition at The Curious Rabbit. “I usually work from my home studio, so I’m really looking forward to the opportunity to engage with the community during my residency,” Mr Hewitt said.
