Carollers and a special visit by Santa Claus helped mark the start of Wagga Wagga's Christmas celebrations on Thursday evening. Community members gathered around the pine tree in the Victory Memorial Gardens as the new light installation was switched on. Featuring 13,800 golden-coloured lights, the installation will light up the cityscape each evening through the festive period and beyond. Flags and footpath decals have also popped up across the CBD, while the annual Christmas digital projection can be seen from the Wollundry Lagoon side of the Civic Centre each night.

Wagga's future is GM's focus Progress, growth and transparency are high on new General Manager Peter Thompson’s agenda after starting in the role on 30 November. Mr Thompson joins Wagga Wagga City Council from Tamworth Regional Council where he held the roles of General Counsel and Director Planning and Compliance. While Mr Thompson has been recruited on a five-year contract, he said his focus is on building a vibrant and strong community

well into the future. “I’m hopeful and confident that I can progress the interests of the community through the vehicle of Council in a way that’s going to reap benefits not only in the next five years but for the next generation as well,” he said. “The Councillors during the recruitment process said they are looking for someone that’s qualified and experienced and I tick both those boxes. “The only box I need to tick is the trust of the community and I can’t ask for that - I have to work in the job and earn that trust over a period of time.”

We’re now on Facebook!

Mr Thompson hit the ground running, starting his first day on the job just after 6am when he met with Council’s outdoor staff at the Alan Turner Depot on Fernleigh Road. He also met with staff at the Civic Centre and Parks Depot, along with other meetings and briefings before attending the launch of the Civic Theatre’s Season 2018 that evening followed by the switching on of the new light installation in the Victory Memorial Gardens. “I reckon I’m pretty safe in saying I’m the first GM in NSW to actually start at the depot and meet the outdoor staff,” Mr Thompson said. “I’ve had briefings on what’s currently an

issue in Wagga and what things need to be dealt with sooner rather than later. “I’m definitely here to progress the interests of Wagga during this exciting political climate in terms of the funding that’s currently available and want to make sure Wagga gets its fair share.” Mr Thompson is qualified in both science and law and is accredited by the Law Society of New South Wales as a specialist in Local Government and Planning Law, with seven years’ experience in private practice. He has held subsequent employment with the NSW Environment Protection Authority as a Senior Operations Officer, and the Department of Land and Water Conservation.

He may have the name of a rock star, but his personality is quite the opposite. Jovi is a black male domestic shorthair who loves to curl up on a lap and enjoy pats. He will also shower you with kisses and cuddles. If Jovi is your new little rock star you can adopt him for $172, which includes microchipping, lifetime registration, first vaccination, desexing, worming, heartworm test and a vet check. You can meet him and all his ‘band members’ friends at Glenfield Road Animal Shelter, 1pm to 4.15pm, Monday through Saturday. Contact the shelter on 6971 4651 or visit graswagga.com.au.

Lodgement of applications prior to Christmas closedown The last date for Development Applications, Construction Certificates and Subdivision Certificates to be received before the Christmas closedown is Wednesday 20 December at 4.30pm. Each year Council receives an influx of applications prior to the Christmas closedown and there is insufficient time to acknowledge or begin processing these until almost two weeks later in early January. Please ensure all applications are presented to Council prior to the noted cut-off or held back from lodgement until early in the New Year.

SHIPSHAPE: Project Coordinator (Parks & Recreation) Phill Blake inspects the shoreline upgrade works underway at Lake Albert.

Lake Albert foreshore works to make a splash this summer

Long, lazy summer days by the waters’ edge are in store for Wagga Wagga residents. Works underway on a 200m stretch of shoreline on the eastern side of Lake Albert are sure to make a splash for all lake users. Foreshore landscaping on either side of the boat ramp at Apex Park will make accessing the water easier and safer. Works are also being carried out to repair and protect the shoreline from erosion. Sand-filled cushions and large rocks will provide seating by the waters’ edge, a dedicated kayak/ canoe ramp is under construction and a raised sand pit will give an additional safe area for families to enjoy. Twenty poles along the shoreline will also provide dedicated boat tie up points. “Lake Albert is already a popular destination for residents and visitors, for both boating and recreational purposes. These upgrades provide improvements for all as well as attracting new users to the lake, and, complement the existing family-friendly facilities already at the lake,” Strategic Asset Planner (Parks and Recreation) Ben Creighton said. “This project delivers a number of improvements

to access and safety at the lake. These include stairs in the shoreline to easily move from the sand to the higher grassed areas, a raised sandpit area slightly away from the water for families with toddlers to safely enjoy the space and assigned boat tie up areas will help separate vessels from people enjoying the water. “Some works have also been carried out to remediate erosion in a section of the foreshore which will help strengthen and protect the banks of the lake into the future.” All treatments along the foreshore are designed to withstand the elements and fluctuating lake water levels. The foreshore works are the second stage of improvement works at Lake Albert with upgrades to the Apex Park car park and boat ramp completed last year. A $500,000 grant from Roads and Maritime Services NSW Boating Now Projects and $230,000 contributed by Council has funded the project. Works were split in two stages as low water levels were required to carry out the foreshore works. The shoreline works are expected to be complete in a fortnight.

U PDATE O N A PPE A L PROC E SS Following Council’s decision to refuse a development application for a Transitional Group Home at 199 Gurwood Street (DA17/0211), the applicant has lodged an appeal with the NSW Land and

Council News - A City of Wagga Wagga publication

COUNCILLOR COLUMN

On Tuesday morning I was fortunate enough to attend a breakfast with the school captains of Wagga. During this breakfast a number of ideas and issues were raised by these

students for improving the city not just for young people but for all. A few of the many ideas mentioned were: • Increasing public transport, especially on weekends • Improving sporting facilities • Improving and increasing cultural, artistic and

performance activities and opportunities • Increasing the connection between Council and young people • More community building events Earlier this year Councillor Keenan and I put forward a notice of motion about improving the connection between Council and the young people of Wagga

councillor.hayes@wagga.nsw.gov.au

and for many months the staff have been working with young people about the best way to increase that connection with a report coming to the January meeting. This report is important because when the students were asked whether they were planning on staying in Wagga post high school or not, less that 20 per cent

indicated that they were. A range of reasons were provided for their decision such as their university course they want to do is elsewhere, plans to travel, and greater opportunities in the capital cities. This presents a challenge to not only Council but everyone invested in Wagga as how we work towards making this city an attractive

option for young people to choose to stay. We hope the report coming to Council in January provides an opportunity to create a framework in which the youth of Wagga can help shape its future and we will be lesser for it if we didn’t listen intently.

High school captains gathered at Council on Tuesday morning for a mayoral breakfast, where they shared with Council their thoughts on leadership, youth engagement and what Council can do to improve Wagga Wagga. The young leaders said many great changes had recently taken place in Wagga Wagga and that Council offers a broad events calendar. However, they also identified that there could be more infrastructure and services targeted towards youth within the city. There was also consensus that more opportunities could be created that allowed for a united youth approach to tackling small and large local issues. “On Tuesday morning we were able to meet with an enthusiastic group of school captains who told us what they see as positive changes within Wagga, including the revitalisation of the Main Street, and areas where Council can improve for example making sure there is recreational infrastructure for youth not just young children,” Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM said.

“I look forward to working in partnership with these school captains in the future to deliver more leadership programs and opportunities for our local youth.” Council will consider the leaders’ feedback alongside feedback collected from an extensive youth engagement consultation program that ran between July and November. The consultation program involved a youth forum, online survey, workshops and working groups. The findings from the youth engagement consultations will be presented at the December Council Meeting. At the breakfast on Tuesday morning, Council announced the winner of the iPad Mini, Wagga Wagga High School student Cade Davies. Cade was randomly drawn from the list of more than 200 people who completed the online youth survey. The High School Captains’ Mayoral breakfast was attended by representatives from Wagga Wagga High School, Kooringal High School, Mount Austin High School, St Mary McKillop, Kildare Catholic College, The Riverina Anglican College and Wagga Christian College.
