MORE ADULT CHANGE FACILITIES COMING TO CBD Community members living with a disability and their carers will soon have access to more adult change facilities in the city. Wagga Wagga City Council approved the refurbishment of two public facility spaces in the city’s CBD area at its 17 December meeting last year. Community consultation identified an issue for adults with a disability not being able to use existing accessible amenities for themselves or family members with physical disabilities. The project was identified in Council’s Disability Inclusion Action Plan (2017-2021), a road map to increasing access and improving the liveability of the city for people with disabilities. It involves the conversion of The Rest Centre in Morrow Street and the toilets in the Bangayarra Walkway in Baylis Street into adult accessible
facilities which will be available 24/7 using the Master Locksmith Access Key system. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM said the project was a positive step in providing more and easier access to public facilities. “This is about meeting the needs of the whole community,” Cr Conkey said. “We want to provide safe, clean and comfortable public facilities and this project at two sites goes a long way towards achieving this goal.” Council received $250,000 funding under the Stronger Country Communities Funding initiative towards the project. It follows the installation of The Marveloo, a purpose-built adult lay down facility, in the Bolton Park precinct last year.

MAKING A SPLASH: The free movie screening at the Oasis Aquatic Centre as part of Australia Day celebrations proved a hit with the community.
LOCAL LEGENDS RECOGNISED
Three outstanding Wagga Wagga residents were honoured for their community contributions at the 2019 Australia Day Awards held at the Civic Theatre on 25 January. Citizen of the Year was awarded to Alan Lean for his contribution toward the regional Camp Quality Centre and a driving force in Country Hope. Alan has also been heavily involved with Rotary Club of Wagga Wagga initiatives and events, and active in community radio as a volunteer and board member at 2AAAFM. Dr Matthew Lennon, 25, was named Young Citizen of the Year for his work in rural health and mentoring students to train and continue to work in rural and regional areas. Part of this vision involved the formation of Doctors for Rural Education and Medicine (DREAM). The 2019 Walk of Honour inductee was Cecil “Bob” Scott, known as the ‘heart and soul’ of the Wagga Wagga District Highland Pipe Band which he helped form in 1957. Bob has been a regular performer for many decades at local events such as the Anzac Day march and Dawn Service, the Wagga Wagga Eisteddfod and Tarcutta Driver Memorial Service. Local Aboriginal comedian Dane Simpson was the 2019 Wagga Wagga Australia Day Ambassador, who spoke at the awards ceremony, as well as taking part in some of the other events across the long weekend. Australia Day in Wagga Wagga began with a free movie screening of The Greatest Showman at the Oasis Aquatic Centre. On Australia Day itself, a free community breakfast was held in the Victory Memorial Gardens, followed by Aussie activities, entertainment and a citizenship ceremony in the Civic Centre Arcade.
Works are progressing on schedule (pictured) at McDonald’s Park as the 4 May NRL clash between the Raiders and Panthers draws closer. Wagga Wagga City Council received funding in the first stage of the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund to construct female change facilities at McDonald’s Park and further funding in the second round to expand the spectator seating. Wagga Wagga Rugby League is coordinating the projects worth in excess of $400,000, which also saw the canteens on the eastern side moved further back to the fence to increase spectator capacity and
useability. Tickets for the Raiders-Panthers game are on sale now, with about 4000 of the 10,000 tickets already snapped up. It will be a huge green and gold weekend in the city, with the Wagga Wagga Gold Cup Carnival in the days before the NRL blockbuster. Footy fans can purchase tickets online at raidersshop.com.au or at the Visitor Information Centre on Tarcutta Street and the Oasis Aquatic Centre on Morgan Street. Pre-purchase tickets begin at $20 for juniors (ages 5-16), while family tickets (two adults and two children) are just $80.

Residents of Tarcutta, Ladysmith and Uranquinty are being asked to share their experiences of flooding in their area as the next stage of the Floodplain Risk Management Program gets underway. The NSW Government program consists of five stages to help councils make informed decisions about what measures are needed to reduce and manage flood risk. Flood studies for the three villages were completed in late 2014, which carried out detailed hydrologic and hydraulic computer modelling to define the range of possible floods that can occur in each village. Floodplain Risk Management Studies and Plans for Tarcutta, Ladysmith and Uranquinty are now being developed to help identify and recommend appropriate actions to manage flooding in these communities. “Tarcutta, Ladysmith and Uranquinty each experienced severe flooding in the October 2010 and March 2012 floods that swept through the Murrumbidgee basin,” Wagga Wagga City Council’s Director Commercial Operations Caroline Angel said. “Many properties were flooded during the floods, with October 2010 causing more extensive damage and
wider evacuation. “Flood Studies for these three villages were carried out in late 2014, with detailed hydrologic and hydraulic computer modelling to define the range of possible floods that can occur in each town. “The documents now being developed will make a detailed assessment of flood risk in each of the three villages and will include investigating a range of possible measures Council may use to reduce or manage flood risk in the towns. “We would like to hear your experiences of flooding to better understand how flooding occurs in these villages and what measures may improve the current flood situation.” Council has appointed flood engineering specialists GRC Hydro to complete the Floodplain Risk Management Studies and Plans. Tarcutta, Uranquinty and Ladysmith residents have been mailed an information pack and questionnaire, which can also be completed online at wagga.nsw.gov.au/floodfutures. Residents are asked to complete the surveys by Friday 1 March 2019 to ensure their feedback can be included in the development of the documents.
councillor.koschel@wagga.nsw.gov.au | 0400 712 880 Wagga Baths. I understand all the concerns I am receiving around Lake Albert. The new ultrasonic units were placed back in December. This is a great start to help reduce and stop the algae from spreading, but I am aware that more needs to be done. The joint program announced by the General Manager at a public meeting in December will complement the
ultrasonic units to hopefully help solve the issue. This program includes running a pipeline from river to the lake to allow it to be topped up by a metre when needed. It’s important that this project gets off the ground to ensure one of our biggest assets is maintained. I will continue to keep working hard for the community and ensure that all our
resources are being used correctly. I have learnt that it is hard to keep everyone happy, no matter how hard you try. I will hold my head high and continue to work for future generations. Please continue to contact myself with any concerns you have, it’s great to hear your thoughts.

The Civic Theatre will hit the road to present a new original production in seven different community halls in September this year. The theatre has developed a new play, The Hall Committee, written by playwright, actor and comedian Damian Callinan whose film The Merger screened nationally last year. The Hall Committee will include a cast of local Wagga and Sydney actors who will bring to life the fictional village of “Rummage South”. The play has been in development for more than 12 months, with Damian interviewing local representatives from various halls. He’s heard stories of incredible conflict, stories with heart and tales of complicated community manoeuvring. The source material has been rich and Damian has been delighted by the tales he’s been told. “Devised to be performed in the small country hall environment, audiences will have their own hall transformed in front of them as the cast usurp their residing committee to bring this interactive, immersive, hilarious play to life,” the writer and director said. “There’s a real appreciation from regional audiences when you’re telling their stories. “I spoke with some passionate people who told locations when related to a Recreation Facility (Major). Exhibition Period: 2 February 2019 to 1 March 2019 (inclusive) and invite public submissions on the amendment until 15 March 2019.
