Major upgrades in store for two key sporting facilities in the city Two key sporting facilities in Wagga Wagga are in line for major upgrades after Council was awarded more than $7.74 million in grants in Round One of the NSW Government’s Multi-Sport Community Facility Fund. The allocation for Wagga

Wagga City Council includes $5 million for the Bolton Park Sports Hub – Stage 1 project (Jim Elphick Tennis Centre) and just over $2.74 million for the Bill Jacob Athletics Centre upgrade project at Jubilee Park. Deputy Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Jenny McKinnon welcomed the announcement by the NSW Office of Sport, saying the two projects will deliver wide reaching sporting, social and economic benefits. “The Bolton Park Sports Hub – Stage 1 project is in partnership with Tennis NSW and will see the Jim Elphick Tennis Centre redeveloped into a nationally significant tennis venue,” Cr McKinnon said.

“The Bill Jacob Athletics Centre upgrade will include construction of a 400-metre synthetic running track, along with a new warm up area, facilities for field events, new drainage and landscaping. “Once completed, these upgrades have the potential to see our city host more state and even national-level sporting competitions, further enhancing Wagga Wagga’s status as the ‘City of Good Sports’.” Duty MLC for Wagga Wagga, Wes Fang, has welcomed the funding as a major win for the city, delivering significant sporting, economic and social benefits to the community. “As communities grow, providing world-class facilities

is vital to enable people of all ages and abilities to get on the court or the track and enjoy the benefits that sport offers,” Mr Fang said. “These upgrades mean the door opens for our city to attract even more major sporting events, whether they be International Tennis Federation tennis or state and national athletic competitions, and the economic boost that such events will bring for Wagga Wagga.” The first stage of the Bolton Park Sports Hub sees not only the reconfiguration of Geoff Lawson Oval for cricket and AFL, but a complete redevelopment of the historic Jim Elphick Tennis Centre. New Agile Library Service hits the road Wagga Wagga City Library is now operating as a standalone service for residents of the Local Government Area, enabling the library to offer a broader and more accessible range of programs and resources to the community. Council made the decision in September 2021 to become a standalone library service from 1 July 2022 based on extensive community feedback gathered during the 2019/20 Library Review and follow up village consultation process. Manager Library Services Claire Campbell said the standalone library service will enable the library to connect with more residents no matter where they live across the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area. “Our new Agile Library Service launched with visits to Collingullie, Estella and Boorooma on Friday 1 July,” Ms Campbell said. “We are delighted to see the new service heading out to the villages and suburbs led by our new Agile Library Officers Murray and Rachael. “Initially this will be a click and collect service, so give the library a ring to tell us what books, DVDs or audio books you want us to bring to your closest Agile site.” The click and collect car and van service will be in place until the specialised custom-designed library vans arrive in mid-August. Their delivery has been delayed due to COVID-19 impacts on the contractor.

The library website has the Agile Schedule available to download, or you can click on the list to see your local Agile site on Google maps: waggalibrary.com.au The website also has the 18 locations where BUILD, the July winter school holiday program will be delivered starting on Monday (4 July). As part of the changes, current members are being encouraged to get their new Wagga Wagga City Library card, now available for collection at the library. “Your Riverina Regional Library (RRL) card will keep working for borrowing physical books until it is exchanged for the new Wagga Wagga City Library card,” Ms Campbell said. “However, library users will need your new card to access our eLibrary resources online, such as eBooks and eAudio books.” Library members who live outside the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area can join the Wagga Wagga City Library as a reciprocal member. All they need to do is show their RRL card to staff and they will be given a new Wagga Wagga City Library card. Like all reciprocal members across the NSW Public Libraries network, they will be able to borrow four items at a time from the Wagga Wagga City Library collection with their new card. For more information, visit waggalibrary.com.au

weekly Cook’s Galley moved into MOWING REPORT new exhibition space 4 - 8 JULY 2022

In a major milestone for the Museum of the Riverina Redevelopment Project, the state heritage listed Mobile Cook’s Galley has been moved to the new building at the Botanic Gardens site on Lord Baden Powell Drive. The Mobile Cook's Galley was a mobile kitchen used to prepare food to feed the chaff cutting team operated by the Fife family during the 1930s and 1940s. Jim McGilvray (carpenter) and Harold Fife made it from recycled materials in 1934. The historic mobile kitchen with its original wood stove and cutlery is one of the most significant and largest objects in the museum’s collection and is extremely rare: there is only one other example of a cook’s galley, located at the National Museum of Australia in Canberra. Museum Manager Luke Grealy said the operation to relocate

the Mobile Cook’s Galley to its new dedicated indoor exhibition space all went to plan. “This object weighs just over five-and-a-half tonnes and is almost 90 years old,” Mr Grealy said. “Jim McGilvray and Harold Fife demonstrated their ingenuity and extraordinary skills in the design and construction of this wonderful object; it towed out of the storage shed beautifully, with the wheels and pivots moving smoothly. “It was then loaded onto a tilt tray truck which reversed it into the new building, where it was raised up with the use of a custom-made support lifted by two mini cranes and two handoperated chain hoists and then placed on a steel plinth where it will remain now in preparation for public display. “The new building has, in a

sense, been designed around this significant object; relocating it safely was critical.” The entire process was overseen by two expert museum conservators contracted to move and then perform conservation work on the galley. Conservator Kim Morris said the move was planned extensively to minimise any impact . “The preservation of the galley was the highest priority of the move,” Mr Morris said. The Mobile Cook’s Galley Conservation Project is being funded by the NSW Government under the Caring for State Heritage category of the NSW Heritage Grants Program and Wagga Wagga City Council.
