PROGRESS: Council’s Project Administrator Tom Lemerle and Director Commercial Operations Caroline Angel view construction activity at the multi-purpose stadium this week.

NEW stadium e p a h s g n i k a t

Installation of the steel frame at Wagga Wagga’s new multi-purpose stadium began this week, marking another milestone in the construction project. Located at the Wagga Wagga Exhibition Centre, the $9M multi-purpose stadium will provide a highquality sporting, community and entertainment/ event space in the heart of the city. A 50-tonne crane was on-site for several days to erect eight, 10-metre high structural steel columns that form part of the frame of the stadium. The columns will be secured to the concrete slab, which was poured with 400 cubic metres of concrete in three stages. Continued inside

Cycling network moves forward The rubber is about to hit the road on Wagga Wagga’s multimilliondollar commuter cycling network. In January, it was announced Wagga Wagga City Council had been allocated $11.7M in NSW Government funding to develop, design and implement its Active Travel Plan – Cycling (ATP). Over the past couple of months, Council has been reviewing the preliminary routes featured in the ATP, with adjustments made to the alignments where necessary. The preferred routes have now been identified and Council is calling on the community to provide feedback until 13 June.

Strategic Asset Planner (Parks and Recreation) Ben Creighton said the project will transform the city’s transport infrastructure and cater for predicted growth. “We are creating a complete cycling network with more than 40km of shared paths and endof-trip facilities, such as secure bike storage,” Mr Creighton said. “A commuter cycling network will make cycling or walking to and from work or school a more viable option for our community. “Not only will it make Wagga Wagga a more liveable city, a commuter cycling network has financial, environmental and health benefits and also has the ability to reduce traffic congestion.” The ATP was a key part of Council’s Wagga Wagga Integrated Transport Strategy (WWITS 2040) and improving cycling infrastructure has been raised regularly by the

community as a priority. The five preliminary routes in the ATP have been broken down into 10 main cycling links Bourke Street, Kooringal, the levee, Kapooka, Forest Hill, university, Red Hill Road, Wollundry Lagoon, Morgan Street and southern. “The 10 key links will connect the city’s suburbs with the CBD,” Mr Creighton said. “We will be working through the preferred routes with stakeholder groups over the next week and we’re also asking the wider community to share their thoughts. “The feedback gathered during this consultation process will be used to finalise the design and business case documentation so we can access the full NSW Government funding.” For more information on the project, visit wagga.nsw.gov.au/cycling.

FUNDED: Member for Wagga Wagga, Daryl Maguire, NSW Arts Minister Don Harwin and Mayor Greg Conkey show off the planned upgrade for the Museum of the Riverina.

Wagga Wagga City Council’s Mayor has welcomed this week’s announcement of $3.18M in NSW Government funding to redevelop the Museum of the Riverina’s Botanic Gardens site. The grant announcement for a major overhaul of the museum, was made by NSW Arts Minister Don Harwin and Member for Wagga Wagga, Daryl Maguire on Tuesday. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM thanked the NSW Government for their contribution and Council staff for their hard work on the redevelopment proposal and application. “We are grateful to the NSW Arts Minister for coming to Wagga to make the announcement,” he said. “The NSW government contribution of $3.188M is warmly welcomed. “The Museum of the Riverina’s Botanic Gardens site is a regional

facility with an important role to play in the support of community museums in the region; we also expect visitor numbers will grow with the redevelopment and improvement in facilities.” Museum of the Riverina Manager Luke Grealy said the funding will be used to re-develop and expand the exhibition and collection storage spaces, and upgrade and landscape the outdoor exhibition spaces. “The visitor experience will be greatly improved through larger and innovative exhibition spaces along with an increase to the collection storage spaces and improvements to staff and volunteer workspaces,” he said. “This will allow the museum to host large school groups and provide training and community space for meetings and events. “I’m particularly excited about the outdoor area, which will transform the rocky hillside into a landscaped gallery of exhibits

with interpretive panels and accessible pathways,” he said. Arts Minister Don Harwin said the Regional Cultural Fund was established to ensure regional NSW received its fair share of arts and cultural infrastructure, no matter where you live. “Arts and culture is at the heart of every regional community and this first round of funding is evidence that the NSW Government’s commitment to driving growth in arts, screen, culture and heritage in regional NSW is making a difference,” Mr Harwin said. A museum redevelopment plan was completed in 2017 outlining a long-term strategy for the museum’s Botanic Gardens site. Recommendations from the plan were incorporated into this successful grant application. Detailed design and project planning will start in coming months, with construction works scheduled to begin in mid-2019.

MULTI-PURPOSE STADIUM TAKING SHAPE

From front page Next week, the mezzanine level walls of the stadium are scheduled to take shape when precast panels are installed onto the steel column frame. Council’s Director Commercial Operations Caroline Angel said the project is on schedule. “We’ve been lucky with favourable weather since February. The project is progressing well and it’s positive to see the stadium taking shape with the steel columns in place,” she said.

The MPS will feature three indoor courts, change rooms, seating for more than 600 spectators and a function space with catering facilities. The MPS is a collaborative project with funding support of $4.4M received from the Federal Government’s National Stronger Regions Fund and $250,000 from Netball Wagga. Visit Wagga Wagga City Council’s Facebook page for a bird’s eye view of the construction, as captured by drone this week.

The first stage of works to increase disabled parking spaces in the CBD will get underway on Tuesday 5 June. Wagga Wagga City Council’s Mobility Parking Scheme will see 12 new spaces created overall across Baylis Street, Fitzmaurice Street and nearby off-streets. The first stage will see four new disabled parking spaces, which will be up to 12 metres long to allow room for vehicles with rearmounted lift devices. Parts of the footpath may be closed to pedestrians during the works and access to nearby parking spaces may be restricted. The first stage of works will start on Baylis Street between Morgan and Forsyth streets before

moving one block north, followed by works on Tompson Street and Peter Street. The cost of the proposed 12 new Mobility Parking Scheme spaces is $72,500. When all stages are complete there will be a total of 27 disabled parking spaces in 20 locations across the CBD. As part of the scheme, nine existing spaces on Baylis and Fitzmaurice streets will become disabled spaces only. Increased accessible parking in the city centre is one of a number of actions identified in Council’s Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP) 2017-2021. Last week we celebrated National Volunteer Week to acknowledge the six million Australians who give their time as volunteers within their local communities. Volunteerism is an integral part of our communities across Australia. The fact that people are generous enough to contribute their time and energy is a tribute to the society we live in. The other important thing to remember is that a lot of volunteer work is performed by people who have no desire to be recognised for it but just wish to assist other community members. I see examples of this at many of the events I attend on behalf of Council and I would like to share one of the hidden gems I have

come across. A couple of weeks ago I was fortunate to attend the 35th birthday of the Wagga RSL Day Club, which is an initiative of the NSW Department of Veteran Affairs and RSL Clubs. There are a network of these clubs across NSW which started in 1977. They are open to veterans, their families, war widows and older members of the community. The Wagga group is run by a small number of dedicated volunteers, who organise transport, activities, meals and entertainment for up to 35 wonderful people. The love and support I saw being given by the volunteer organisers and other supporters and the enjoyment of all of the attendees, was amazing to watch. Each of the

attendees told me that they would not miss the regular get-together for any reason if they could avoid it. It was an amazing gathering to attend and I encourage those who either wish to volunteer or attend as a member to seriously consider it. If you are interested please call 1800 555 254 to talk with a community support advisor. This example is just one instance how volunteers are active in our region and across the country each and every day. Volunteerism is a foundation stone of our Australian society and with what I see and experience I am confident this will continue to thrive into the future.
