Dog owners are advised that the Narrung Street Off-Leash Dog Area closed this week to permit access to work crews for the continuation of the Main City Levee Upgrade. These critical infrastructure works will deliver 1 in 100 year flood protection. It is expected to re-open by the end of June, weather permitting. Council has five other designated off-leash areas for dogs across the city, including an enclosed agility track at Lake Albert. These locations are areas where dogs can run, exercise and socialise leash-free with other dogs and dog park visitors. Pedestrians and cyclists are also reminded that the Wiradjuri Walking Track between Wiradjuri Bridge and Johnston Street is temporarily closed until May. This includes the upper track and lower river side paths and the community is advised to follow the closure signs and use alternative routes. The 6.1km levee upgrade project is being undertaken in stages, and the entire project is expected to be completed in mid-2020. When complete the $10M project will deliver 1 in 100 year flood protection to the CBD, critical city assets and thousands of homes. PAPERLESS: Council’s Development Assessment Co-ordinator Cameron Collins points out the advantages of using new electronic planning applications now available to view and download on Council’s website.

A new and simplified process to electronically lodge planning applications at Wagga Wagga City Council is set to streamline assessment times and reduce costs to the community. The lodgement of planning applications to Council in electronic format will be available from Monday 4 March, 2019 with applicants urged to take advantage of the new service. Council’s Manager City Development Paul O’Brien said the new digital lodgement process has been trialled with some of the city’s regular developers to work through any issues and now the

International Women's Day in Wagga

International Women’s Day will be celebrated with diverse program of activities presented by Wagga Wagga City Council. Wagga Wagga City Library, the Museum of the Riverina and Wagga Wagga Art Gallery are holding a range of exhibition launches, talks and more on Friday 8 March and over the weekend. Council will also celebrate its own inspiring women, with staff also able to attend screenings from the Hear Them Roar series by Women in Business Wagga and a talk by a guest speaker. The library will be hosting award-winning writer Carly Findlay to launch her book Say Hello. The author lives with a rare skin condition and the book challenges your assumptions and beliefs about what it’s like to have a visible different appearance. The talk has proved popular, with the International Women’s Day event already booked out.

MUSEUM OF THE RIVERINA

The Museum of the Riverina will launch its new exhibition SHE, as well as hosting the All About Women livestream direct from the Opera House. SHE is a three-in-one exhibition, celebrating women of Wagga Wagga through photographs, stories and recollections. In Small Town Girl, photographer Elize Strydom documents the lives of teenage girls from small towns around the world. Herstory profiles 50 significant women of Wagga Wagga’s past and present – from war heroes to a tow truck driver who became a member of parliament. Evolution includes the portraits and stories of 32 women who nurtured the Wagga Women’s Health Centre from 1979 to 2019. The Women’s Health Centre is a story of not only helping local women, but the obstacles they had to overcome. SHE will be launched on International Women’s Day at the Historic Council Chambers site. On Sunday 10 March you can experience the main stage action of All About Women. The three headline sessions and Q&A will be livestreamed from Sydney to the Council Meeting Room from 1pm to 5.30pm. For more information on both events or to make a booking, visit museumriverina.com.au.

WAGGA WAGGA ART GALLERY

To mark International Women’s Day, Wagga Wagga Art Gallery will be hosting a global exhibition launch to mark International Women’s Day. The new and diverse exhibitions to be launched are Sarah McEwan: Feelings from Bodies, the National Contemporary Jewellery Award from Griffith Regional Gallery, Ruth Cummins: Tidying Down, Moving Histories // Future Projections, Daniel Crooks’ High Street (after Ruscha) and Glenda Mackay: Home, Land, Security. The opening talks will start at 6.30pm on Friday 8 March, followed by a special performance facilitated by artist Sarah McEwan at 7pm. McEwan will survey Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM, artist Vicky Okot, activist Holly Conroy and other local participants. The five-question survey will create an “installation conversation” to bring to life her exhibition, which was created from 50 anonymous surveys while McEwan had a residency at the Los Angeles at the Women’s Centre for Creative Work in 2018. For more information, visit wagga.nsw.gov.au/gallery.

system was ready to launch. “This process has many advantages for both Council and the developer or applicant,” Mr O’Brien said. “Developers no longer need to print out large documents and can now lodge applications from their home or work without needing to come into the Civic Centre. “For Council, it means paper records don’t need to be kept in archives for a number of years which comes at a cost to the community. “It also takes out administration time at the start of the application process,

which means the assessment process can start sooner.” Mr O’Brien encouraged all applicants to embrace the electronic system as early as possible. “Applicants will be offered the option to continue lodging applications in printed format, however, this will be discouraged as all printed documentation will be digitised upon lodgement and then destroyed and disposed of,” Mr O’Brien said. “Anyone wanting to submit an application can come to the Civic Centre and speak with the Duty Planner at the customer service desk.

“Applicants can still opt to drop in a USB drive if they prefer but essentially Council has developed a range of new application forms and checklists that will guide the applicant in lodging their application electronically.” The application forms and checklists will appear on Council’s website and be available for viewing and downloading from Monday 4 March. More information is available by contacting Council on 1300 292 442, email council@ wagga.nsw.gov.au or visit the Civic Centre and speak with a Customer Service representative.

GIVE YOUR GROUP A BOOST WITH CLUBGRANTS

Is your community initiative, service or program needing a boost? Category one funding applications are now open for the ClubGRANTS scheme, which is administered by Wagga Wagga City Council. ClubGRANTS allows registered clubs with annual gaming machine revenue exceeding $1M to share a percentage of that revenue with specific development and support projects. Last year’s program saw more than $119,930 in funding presented to 16 community groups, including the Ashmont Breakfast Program, War Widows Guild of Australia NSW, Camp Quality and more. The local ClubGRANTS committee have met and determined the following

priorities for the 2019 category one projects: • Early childhood and family services • Women and family health • Childcare services Depending on the funds available, the committee will consider the other state ClubGRANT priority areas such as aged, disability, youth, emergency, transport, and education and employment training. Applications open from 9am, Monday 4 March and can be made online at wagga.nsw.gov.au/clubgrants until Friday 26 April. Two weeks from now on 18 March, the 2019-20 Annual Grants Program will open for applications. Each year Wagga Wagga City Council invites all community organisations, businesses and individuals who are eligible to apply to submit an application for consideration for funding. In 2019-20 the funding pool will be

an amazing $198,500 spread over 10 different categories. This is a large amount of funds that Council set aside for the community that can be accessed year-in, year-out. In 2018-19 more than 60 grants were made to successful applicants. These grants enable recipients to benefit now and into the future on projects that may not have been possible without the co-funding from the annual grant funds.

The Annual Grants Program demonstrates what is possible within a community when Council and local organisations work together in partnership. A group that may not be able to afford a project or event on their own can combine either eligible in-kind offerings or their own funds to match with a contribution from Council to make a project possible.
