FOOTY FEVER: Wagga Mayor Cr Greg Conkey OAM and AFL NSW-ACT Game Development Manager Marc Geppert with GWS Giants’ defender Harry Perryman at the announcement of an AFL double header next year between the Giants and Richmond’s men’s and women’s teams.

Wagga Wagga’s longstanding reputation as the “City of Good Sports” reached greater heights this week with two major announcements confirming a sporting bonanza for the city next year. Wagga Wagga City Council has secured AFL, AFLW, NRL and A-League fixtures in 2020 which will see some of the most elite players of each football code in the city at various times of the year. Riverina locals, and visitors alike, can look

forward to seeing GWS Giants, Richmond, Canberra Raiders, Newcastle, Sydney FC and Newcastle Jets in a top level serving of football main events to satisfy fans’ cravings for elite sport in the city. All this good news for the city came in the same week Wagga prepares for this Sunday’s historic W-League match between Sydney FC and the Jets at McDonald’s Park. Major upgrade for local road The second stage towards the complete resurfacing of one of Wagga Wagga’s main arterial roads will start next weekend.

Wagga Wagga City Council will begin Stage 2 of renewing Lake Albert Road’s surface with night works between Stanley Street and Kooringal Road starting on Sunday 10 November. It will take 13 night shifts to complete, weather permitting. Works hours will take place between 6pm and 6am. Council’s Director Commercial Operations Caroline Angel said this major work is part of an ongoing program to rehabilitate and

maintain the extensive local road network. “This stage of asphalt pavement rehabilitation is the second in a planned multi-staged approach towards upgrading Lake Albert Road,” Ms Angel said. “Council has an extensive list of road upgrades scheduled in this year’s budget. We are working through that list and achieving success. “Lake Albert Road has been identified as a priority. Work will start on the second stage of a multi-staged project with a focus on renewing the entire surface of this road.” Stage 1 of Lake Albert Road was completed in December last year with the section of road between Fay Avenue and Lord Baden Powell Drive To minimise inconvenience to surrounding residents and local traffic, and for the safety of construction staff, the roadworks will

again be undertaken at night via partial and complete road closures of Lake Albert Road. Council Operations Manager Sylvester Otieno advised there will be detours in place and access to some residences will be affected at certain stages of the work. “Vehicle access to properties will not be available to residents when the works area is located directly in front of their premises,” Mr Otieno said. “If residents require use of their vehicle during the construction period, it is recommended vehicles are parked further along Lake Albert Road outside the work area. “There will be noise associated with this work, but every effort will be made to minimise the impact on residents.” Mr Otieno said residents will be provided updated correspondence regarding the

FOOTBALL CODES TO RAID CITY IN GIANT COUP FOR WAGGA

RAIDERS versus KNIGHTS

A capacity crowd of up to 12,000 die-hard league fans are expected to pack McDonald’s Park to see NRL grand finalist Canberra play Newcastle in a blockbuster round six clash on April 18, 2020. The NRL premiership game is the second as part of a two-year partnership between Wagga Wagga City Council and the Raiders, with the option for a third year. “I think this game is going to be great for the city. Both the Raiders and the Knights have strong supporter bases, and plenty of fans out in our region ready to mobilise behind their team, Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM said. The announcement the Knights will descend on Wagga Wagga brings forward the prospect of seeing a breakout superstar of 2019 in action. “The potential addition of superstars like Kalyn Ponga and Mitchell Pearce is a huge bonus,” Councillor Conkey said. “They're the type of players that younger fans idolise … I think they'll be a huge drawcard.” Canberra Raiders CEO Don Furner said the club was also keen to return to the city. “We play the Knights this

Outside the ground,

improvements are also set to begin with Council approving a series of projects at Equex Centre at the 28 October Council Meeting – including to improve traffic flow and parking. “We’re improving the road access at this particular ground,” Cr Conkey said. “We had some issues here in May, around people leaving the ground, so we’re looking to improve the road exits. “We’re putting an exit out onto Kooringal Road. That will improve the way people are able to leave the ground.” Council is also establishing a bridge over Marshall’s Creek to enable overflow parking. The Saturday clash will kick off at 3pm with tickets set to go on sale in December.

could only hope for … and I’m glad to say our city has secured the biggest game of the 2020 pre-season.” Cr Conkey said the support for both AFL clubs is strong and will ensure a large crowd gathers in Wagga for the Marsh Community Series fixture (men) and the AFLW competition game. “There is a strong connection between the Giants and the Riverina,” Cr Conkey said. “A number of players learnt the game in the Riverina and have strong family connections. “The membership of Richmond is more than 100,000. I’m sure we will see members of the Tiger Army right here in Wagga.” One of those players who grew up in the area and played in Wagga is Giants defender Harry Perryman.

Perryman was back in Wagga for the announcement and said can’t wait to return to an old Riverina stamping ground with his Giants team-mates. “We’ll be keen. I can’t wait to get back out on Robbo in front of a local crowd,” Perryman said. “We’ve got a bit to prove against the Tigers. It’ll be pre-season but it’s our first look at them since the grand final.” The last AFL match played in Wagga was a pre-season fixture between Collingwood and North Melbourne at Robertson Oval in March 2016. The AFL will also contribute $100,000 to the development of the new amenities block at Bolton Park as part of the package negotiated with Council.

The biggest and most anticipated AFL preseason match featuring last season’s grand finalists GWS Giants and Richmond will be played at Robertson Oval in Wagga Wagga next year. And in an unprecedented sporting coup for the city, both clubs’ AFLW teams will play a competition twilight fixture at the same venue a day earlier, kicking off a weekend double header set to attract thousands of supporters to Wagga Wagga. Wagga Wagga City Council and AFL NSWACT have confirmed the weekend AFL bonanza will be played on Saturday and Sunday, 7 and 8 March, and is expected to feature several players with local connections from both clubs. “This is a huge announcement for our city and indeed the entire region,” Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey said. “Having both clubs’ women’s teams here for an AFLW competition match means we are hosting an historic double header weekend of top class Australian football. “The grand final rematch BACK IN WAGGA: GWS played at Robertson Oval in 2013. The strategy will act as a key document that outlines how Council and the broader community can enhance biodiversity across the LGA by developing a range of objectives and actions that address a wide range of issues impacting biodiversity. Council is asking the

community to share their ideas for the future and feedback either in person or online until 13 December to help develop the Biodiversity Strategy. “We want to know how Council and the community can enhance biodiversity within Wagga Wagga and why it is important to you,” Biodiversity Strategy Project Officer Sam Pascall said. “We have held some consultation sessions in October, which will continue in November and the community can also share their thoughts online or in writing.

“Biodiversity is important because it supports the healthy functioning of the environment. The Wagga Wagga LGA is home to a mix of native birds, reptiles, mammals and native flora, which can be put under pressure from fragmented habitats, pest animals, and weed species. “This strategy will look at both the high level and everyday things Council and the community can do to enhance our natural environment into the future.” To help inform the draft Biodiversity Strategy, visit Council’s online community

engagement platform waggaview. com.au/biodiversity and join the conversation before 13 December. Community members can also talk to Council staff at the Sustainable Living Festival on 2 November, a community drop-in session from noon to 2pm at the Civic Centre on 8 November and at the Rewild Community Markets on 16 November. The community’s thoughts will inform the draft Biodiversity Strategy, which is placed on public exhibition in March 2020 for further feedback.

Wagga City Council honours employees with recognition dinner Wagga Wagga City Council recognised the outstanding contribution and achievements of 28 dedicated employees at a recognition dinner at the Civic Theatre last week. Together, the remarkable contingent of long-serving Council staff have contributed 620 years of service to the organisation. “We are so fortunate to have so many dedicated staff who have given invaluable service, not only to Wagga Wagga City Council but also to the community in which they live,” General Manager Peter Thompson said. “It has given me great pleasure to recognise their commitment and celebrate their milestones.” The awards night recognised eight staff who have served Council for 15 years, another six who have worked with the organisation for 20 years, 11 who have

COUNCIL'S LONG-SERVING EMPLOYEES:

15 years: Tanya Jackson, Kathleen Fliedner, Simon Malloy, Sarah Hofsteede, Graham Cox, Ryan Rollings, Danielle Gamble, Sharon Smith. 20 years: Donuvan Brightman, Michael Scarrone, Max Hosgood, Rodney Smith, Trent Whitehead, Stephen McKay. 25 years: David Johns, John Wieland, Michelle Lubke, Jennifer Mansell, Keith Newell, Cynthia Price, Shay Lucas, John Alexander, Robert Wishart, Janet Kemp, Paul Simpson. 30 years: Alexander Jack. 35 years: Rodney Taber. 40 years Mark Murphy. dedicated 25 years to the city and three employees who have served 30 years or more in a Council capacity. Truck and trailer operator Mark Murphy was congratulated on four decades of unwavering dedication to Council, the longest serving employee recognised at the awards. Fellow Council veteran Alexander Jack, affectionately known as AJ, was recognised

for 30 years of service as a Sewer and Environmental Assets Attendant. He provided one of the night’s more heartwarming moments. Mr Jack received his accolade alongside his team compatriot, Water Reclamation Officer Stephen McKay, who was full of praise for his colleague. “An enduring memory of Alex’s dedication is the day the tertiary pond at Kooringal was

in imminent danger of uncontrolled overflow due to a huge turtle having become lodged in the outlet pipe,” Mr McKay said. “Once again whilst others were looking at each other avoiding the inevitable, Alex took the plunge, up to his neck, and removed the unfortunate turtle. “Alex saved the day yet again.” Both Mr Jack and Mr McKay spoke of their pride at celebrating their milestones on the same night, while Director Commercial Operations Caroline Angel described their working partnership as “one to admire”. “These two have formed an incredible friendship that extends well beyond their working hours,” Ms Angel said. “The respect and care they have for one another on both a professional and personal level is something very special.”

COUNCILLOR COLUMN The Minister for Local Government, the Hon Shelley Hancock, called through Wagga Wagga on Tuesday on a flying visit to southern NSW. In the Wagga Wagga City Council’s visitors book the Minister wrote: “Beautiful, beautiful city.” And she is right. We live in a beautiful city. Our impressive main street, our parks and gardens, sporting fields and river and lake precincts are

indeed the envy of many other towns and cities. It’s probably fair to say that many residents take all this for granted. But there is another side to this city which we must also acknowledge. Many residents are doing it tough as outlined in the current SBS series, ***Struggle Street. Whilst this series focuses on Wagga Wagga and the Riverina, it could be filmed in any town, city and region in Australia. A large number of city and rural people are indeed struggling.

One of the reasons is the drought, which is having a severe impact. I have difficulty imaging how farmers cope mentally when they see their livestock dying around them along with the stress and strain of financial pressures. Then there are the other issues facing some town and city dwellers as outlined in the SBS program. What the program hasn’t focused on to date is the many services that are available to help people in Wagga Wagga.
