Council extends deadline SUCCESS OF ONE TREE FOR ME SEEDLING GIVEAWAYS IN 2021 for New Year’s Eve EOIs

Council has extended the deadline for expressions of interest (EOI) for event organisers or groups to host the city’s New Year’s Eve celebrations for 2021 and 2022. The expressions of interest now close midnight Wednesday 6 October 2021. Director Community Janice Summerhayes said the one week extension would allow event organisers extra time to complete their submissions and give other interested parties time to apply. “We’ve been contacted by a number of interested parties, and we’re hoping that the extra time will give people who weren’t going to make the first deadline the chance to get their submission in,” Ms Summerhayes said. “It’s certainly worth the effort – we have $54,000 of funding available for interested event organisers to plan and host the 2021 New Year’s Eve event.”

The NSW Government’s ‘Roadmap to recovery’ announcement earlier this week provides organisers with a clearer pathway to plan larger-scaled events coming out of the latest COVID-19 restrictions. “Given the challenges faced by event organisers and businesses over the past two years, we’re very happy to use this opportunity to support the industry, and at the same time support a fun, familyfriendly and COVID-safe event for our community to enjoy this New Year’s Eve,” Ms Summerhayes said. “We’re looking for a communityfocused event with a wide audience appeal that gives our residents a well-deserved chance to come together and celebrate.” For further information please contact Events Officer Sally Manning on 6926 622 or email events@wagga.nsw.gov.au For more information visit wagga. nsw.gov.au/nye

OF THE

WEEK

#adoptdontshop

Glenfield Road Animal Shelter does not have a Pet of the Week this week. That’s great news because it means we have low numbers of dogs and cats needing a new adopted home. We do consider this time as the “quiet before the kitten season storm” … and it comes as a reminder to desex your pets! Desexing not only prevents unwanted litters but also has many health benefits for both genders. It can also help stop animals straying which, in turn, prevents injury from being hit by cars, jumping fences and

dog attacks. Kittens and puppies are pretty cute but carry a lot of responsibilities. Did you know if you have a unexpected litter, you have to get the kittens or puppies microchipped before you give them away or sell them?

Also when you desex your dog before 6 months of age, and your cat before 4 months of age, you receive a reduced lifetime registration fee. Contact us for more information at wagga. nsw.gov.au/animals

Sit back and watch your garden grow – that’s the message from Council’s Environment team, who this week handed out the final free native seedlings for 2021 as part of Council’s One Tree for Me initiative. Through One Tree for Me, Council is aiming to get 65,000 seedlings planted in the local area over the next six years – one seedling for every resident. Council donated a total of 12,006 seedlings in 2021 through a series of seedling giveaways and a variety of community planting events including Schools Tree Day and National Tree Day. Environmental Education Officer Alice Kent is looking forward to seeing the seedlings growing in residents’ backyards over the coming months. “All the One Tree for Me seedlings are local native species, meaning they are suited to our local conditions, including frost in winter and long hot summers, as well as our soils,” Ms Kent said. “If you haven’t planted your seedlings yet, now is the time to get them into the ground, so they have time to establish before the heat of summer.” As the seedlings grow they will provide important habitat and food sources for insects, birds and animals like possums and squirrel gliders. “Supporting nature is also rewarding for us,” Ms Kent said. “We get to enjoy the new creatures visiting our gardens, knowing we’re part of something so much bigger. “Our gardens are connected, and as each garden becomes biodiverse, they all join together to make a biodiverse city.” Ms Kent said the Environment team were overwhelmed by the positive response from the community and wanted to thank residents for their support. “We still have a long way to

CARING FOR YOUR NATIVE SEEDLINGS • Water new seedlings when you plant them, then every few days as they establish. If your plant looks unwell, it may be receiving too much or not enough water.

•S urround your seedlings with mulch. This helps keep the soil moist and adds organic material as the mulch breaks down. • I f you have any curious pets that may accidently damage your precious seedlings, use tree guards to protect them while they establish. You can purchase these at garden centres, or make your own with milk cartons.

On stage! Young storytellers ‘Sharing Stories, Sharing Place’ The Civic Theatre stage played host this week to some of Wagga Wagga’s young storytellers as part of the ‘Sharing Stories, Sharing Place’ program. The teenagers were participating in workshops aimed at developing skills and creating a theatrical work to share their stories. The program is a partnership between STARTTS (NSW Service for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture

and Trauma Survivors), Create Hub Riverina and the Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre, taking youth from multiple refugee communities in the city and creating a youth theatre ensemble. Create Hub Riverina’s Creative Director Claire Harris is thrilled to be using creative processes to challenge the status quo and confront the issues associated with refugee resettlement between refugees and the broader Wagga community.

“We see it as a gentle way to break down barriers and share culture, while at the same time upskilling young people in performance, language and theatre skills” she said. The program has been running since March with the group meeting regularly to devise a piece of theatre that shares stories of life as a young refugee in Australia and celebrates diversity, multiculturalism and

connectedness. Due to COVID restrictions, much of the group’s recent meetings have been done virtually. Civic Theatre Manager Carissa Campbell was only too happy to fill the void left by cancelled touring performances with an impromptu school holiday intensive workshop program for the students. “It has been a joy to see life on the stage this week,” Ms Campbell said. “Tours are unlikely

to return until later in the year, so an empty stage became a fabulous opportunity. “We have been a partner of this very worthwhile program since the beginning so we couldn’t be happier to have these young, enthusiastic theatre makers in the building.” STARTTS have provided expert traumainformed support

throughout the project, guiding participants and staff through workshops on navigating cultural identities, cultural safety and self-care tools for community champions. “Creating high quality art with underlying social messages requires challenging participants to step out of their comfort zone, and this project provides a strong

foundation from which to do this, taking into account every individual’s unique abilities,” Ms Harris said. 'Sharing Stories, Sharing Place' will be showcased at the Civic Theatre in December, drawing the project to a close. Details and tickets will be available closer to the date at civictheatre. com.au

IT’S TIME TO RECOGNISE OUR COMMUNITY CHAMPIONS:

COUNCIL LAUNCHES 2022 AUSTRALIA DAY AWARDS Achievements by local citizens who have made significant community contributions will be the focus of nominations for the 2022 Australia Day Awards. Nominations for five categories opened on Tuesday 28 September and give residents the opportunity to recognise those citizens who have made a difference during the past year. Australia Day committee organisers are urging community members to start thinking about local champions who make a contribution in all areas of community life. Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Cr Greg Conkey OAM joined with the city’s 2021 Citizen of the Year, Belinda Crain, and 2021 Young Citizen of the Year, Clare Lawlor, to launch the awards. “There’s many people in our community making a difference. Let’s hear about them and let’s tell their stories,” Cr Conkey said. “These awards are a fantastic opportunity to recognise all citizens who have made a significant contribution.” Ms Crain said being named Citizen of the Year 2021 was a humbling experience. “There’s a lot of people out there having a go and trying to make a difference for the

It is a great honour to be recognised in this way.” Young Citizen of the Year 2021 Clare Lawlor said recognising young people’s achievements was a positive and rewarding way to build community spirit. “Our youth are in the community doing amazing things so it’s only a given that they’re recognised for it,” Ms Lawlor said. “They are paving the way in so many areas and to be able to give credit for

NEW SHARED PATH TO LINK RED HILL ROAD TO POMINGALARNA RESERVE

Construction of a new sealed path from the western end of Red Hill Road to the Wagga Wagga Multi Sport Cycling Complex (WWMSCC) at Pomingalarna Reserve is set to get underway on Tuesday 5 October 2021, weather permitting. The Pomingalarna Link is part of Wagga Wagga City Council’s Active Travel Plan (ATP) Stage 2. Council Project Manager Tom Lemerle said the 2.3 kilometre stretch of shared path will provide access through the northern section of the Silvalite Reserve. “This will improve accessibility for cyclists, runners and walkers who use the Silvalite

out to Pomingalarna Reserve. “A feature of the project will be construction of an 18-metre span metal bridge across a storm water channel toward the Red Hill Road end of the link, which currently has just a dirt causeway crossing. “We will also be

making improvements to the existing Sturt Highway underpass from Bagley Drive to Silvalite Reserve, putting concrete on either side to make it more accessible.” During planning for these works, the project team has undertaken cultural and environmental due diligence as well as stakeholder engagement. As with other links in the ATP network, the shared path will be 2.5-metres wide, with line markings, signage and an asphalt seal most of the way, as well as some concrete sections such as the ones around the Sturt Highway underpass. It will mainly follow the already well-formed
