AGILE LIBRARY VISITS MEN’S SHED Wagga Wagga City Library Program Officers visited the Wagga Wagga Men’s Shed in Ashmont to run a workshop for members as part of the new Agile Library Service. Continued inside

Next step for $8.3 million Dunns Road upgrade Tenders have closed for the design and construction of two intersections as part of the Dunns Road upgrade project. The new intersections at Dunns Road and the Olympic Highway, and Dunns Road and Holbrook Road, will be constructed as part of Stage 2 and Stage 3 of the upgrade project. Stage 1 of the upgrade is due for completion by December 2022, weather permitting, and involves three phases: Phase 1 - Completed Upgrading of the stormwater drainage. Phase 2 - In progress Earthworks, including the
removal of the existing top layers of the road, to be replaced using GPS graders. Phase 3 - Pending Sealing the entire length of Dunns Road. Wagga Wagga City Council Senior Project Manager Silas Darby said delivery of Stage 1 has been impacted by the ongoing wet weather conditions experienced through autumn into winter. “Protracted periods of wet weather have interfered with progress on the Dunns Road earthworks,” Mr Darby said. “A pavement seal cannot be applied over a wet surface without risk of catastrophic failure. “There must be an optimal moisture content in the compacted gravel and too
much moisture could cause the sealing to fail. “We understand the closure is causing inconvenience to motorists who use the road as a short cut between Wagga Wagga and outlying townships such as Uranquinty, however once completed, the upgrade will improve safety and traffic flow.” Dunns Road is closed to traffic between Kunzea Place and the Olympic Highway. Only residents who live on the closed section of Dunns Road are allowed access. Motorists are reminded to follow the direction of road signage and drive to the conditions. Stage 2 of the upgrade will see Council working with Transport for NSW to construct a right-hand turning lane at the

Olympic Highway and Dunns Road intersection. Stage 3 involves the construction of a roundabout at the Holbrook Road and Dunns Road intersection and is subject to receiving black spot funding. The $8.3 million project is funded by the Australian Government and Wagga Wagga City Council.

Celebrating Library Week 2022 with a visit to the Men's Shed From front page The workshop involved assisting members to get their new Wagga Wagga City Library membership cards and introducing workshop participants to the e-Library and databases on offer. Wagga Wagga City Library is now operating as a standalone service for residents of the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area, enabling the library to offer a broader and
more accessible range of programs and resources to the entire community. Library Programs Officer Wendy Harper said the Men’s Shed members were particularly interested in Haynes All Access, one of the new database services the library purchased after receiving requests from the community seeking more information about car manuals. “Haynes offers unlimited
access to the world’s best car and motorcycle repair manuals and covers a vast range of car and motorcycle makes and models,” Ms Harper said. “During a recent Agile Library visit to Tolland Community Centre, we had a conversation with a member of the Wagga Men’s Shed and confirmed that the library could present a workshop on the Haynes database. “We were thrilled to attend the Men’s Shed this week and connect with residents who otherwise might not
have known how to access our eLibrary services such as eBooks and eAudio books.” Wagga Wagga Men’s Shed Secretary David Croft said when he asked members during a meeting if anyone would be interested in the library’s offer to run a workshop, “everyone’s hand went up”. Wagga Wagga Men’s Shed Member Philip Arentz is a current member of the library who was introduced to Access Australia during this week’s workshop.
“Access Australia features local and national news, including The Daily Advertiser. My wife is very keen on it, so I’ll have to mention it to her,” Mr Arentz said. “Older fellas like routine and their day-to-day activities don’t vary too much, so workshops like this give a gradual introduction to technology like eLibrary services, which can be pretty daunting.” Haynes and Access Australia databases can be accessed on the Wagga Wagga City Library’s Databases & Online
Resources page for free with a Wagga Wagga City Library Card. Programs, information sessions and the Agile Library service are part of Wagga Wagga City Library’s new weekly service. If you are a community group, school or childcare service located in the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area, and would like to discuss a partnership opportunity with the Agile Library Service, please contact the library on 6926 9700.

OPENING DOORS: Sarah Wardman (left) and Christine Hillis from the NRMA Safer Driving School ready to the hit the road with Mount Austin High School students Yazmin Gambold and Rosa Knapp (right). A group of senior high school students are on the journey to achieving their provisional licence as part of the ‘We've got the drive!’ partnership project between Wagga Wagga City Council, Mount Austin High School and the local NRMA Safer Driving School. Council was successful in securing $50,000 in Youth Opportunities Program funding from the NSW Department of Communities and Justice for the joint initiative. The grant funds are being used to purchase driver vouchers to access the safer drivers’ course directly from NRMA, along with other resources to support the student learners. Council’s Social Planning Coordinator Sarah Lehman said the Mount Austin High School community identified some of the challenges for students on their post-high school pathway. “Licensing presented as the largest obstacle for young people to gain employment or undertake further education opportunities due to issues such as access and affordability,” Ms Lehman said. “‘We’ve got the drive!’ is designed to support up to 50 local young people from Mount Austin High School to gain their learner licence, through to obtaining their provisional licence. “It improves young people’s access by bringing the program directly to the students, using identified support networks that
they trust, and minimising as many barriers as possible to being able to participate in something like this.” Mount Austin High School Principal Michelle Waugh said the ability to drive is a critical skill for students transitioning to the workplace or higher education. “The cost of lessons is prohibitive and sometimes there are other factors that might mean that students are unable to access all the hours they need to do while on their L plates,” Ms Waugh said. “‘We’ve got the drive!’ has been amazing. The students have high attendance rates in order to participate, so it’s about engaging young people in learning and supporting their education and employment pathways for the future, so they are well prepared for when they leave high school.” Christine Hillis and Sarah Wardman from the NRMA Safer Driving School in Wagga Wagga are pleased to be working with the students, building their confidence behind the wheel, and preparing them for the test. “We think it’s a really important program for the Mount Austin High School community and particularly for the students as it’s about more than just the skill of driving,” Ms Hillis said. “When you see young people at this age and they’re struggling to get their licence, this program can be that sliding door moment when you know it’s going to make a difference, they’re going

to get their licence and it will change their lives.” The program commenced in Term 2 at Mount Austin High School and is already achieving success, with several students getting their provisional licence and others passing their Driver Knowledge Test and now building up their driving hours on their L plates through the support of the program. What students think about ‘We've got the drive!’ “It’s really important to have this opportunity to learn how to drive and to get the lessons for free as it makes it more affordable to get my licence so I can work and help my family and drive to school.” Roni Hasan, Mount Austin High School student “It’s good because it’s weekly lessons so I can get into a routine and it’s convenient because it’s during school hours, so we don’t have to go out of our way to do it. It makes getting our Ps and then our full licence much easier and less expensive.” Yazmin Gambold, Mount Austin High School student “I’ve been really enjoying the lessons. I don’t really get to drive with my family so it’s good to be able to get these hours up. It’s important to have a licence as I work, and it makes it easier for me to get myself to work rather than relying on my sister or paying for Uber.” Rosa Knapp, Mount Austin High School student

Schools Tree Day: students give back to the environment
ENVIRONMENTAL CHAMPIONS: Kate Burton and Kaylie Knowles helped to boost tree numbers at Marrambidya Wetland.
Students from the Indie School Wagga Wagga took part in Schools Tree Day, planting 65 native seedlings at the Marrambidya Wetland this week. The Indie School was keen to take part when it found out about the initiative, wanting to give back to the community and the environment. Teacher Caitlin Breese said students were delighted to go on the Thursday morning excursion to the wetland. “It was a surprise excursion; they had no idea about it, but they wanted to come in and get on board,” Ms Breese said. “The students are gaining knowledge and skills, Connection to Country, and just general knowledge about the environment.”
National Tree Day this Sunday: connect with nature and your community

Council’s Environmental Officer Christina Reid said National Tree Day is a fantastic opportunity to get outside in the fresh air and do something to help your environment. “It’s such a simple thing, but there’s something deeply satisfying about digging a hole, popping in a plant, and tucking the soil in around it,” Ms Reid said. “You know that the little seedling you’re planting will grow into something big and beautiful, providing a home for native wildlife, and helping cool the climate. “Every time you drive past this

All seedlings planted will contribute to Council’s ‘One Tree for Me’ tally. Through the One Tree for Me initiative, Council is aiming to get 65,000 seedlings planted in our local area over the next six years – one seedling for every resident. We’re expecting the same thing this Sunday when a bigger group get together for National Tree Day. “I’d encourage anyone thinking about coming along to get their boots ready by the door; it’ll be a fun morning.” Ms Breese was also supportive of anyone wanting to take part in National Tree Day this Sunday 31 July at the Flowerdale Lagoon. “Get out and do it,” Ms Breese said. “Get your hands dirty.”

Be part of entertaining and feeding the crowds at FUSION BOTANICAL Say hello to FUSION BOTANICAL, one of Wagga Wagga’s most popular and diverse outdoor celebrations of live music, street food and culture – and you can be a part of it! This much-loved springtime festival is returning on Saturday 15 October 2022 and will feature a new stunning natural backdrop; the Botanic Gardens Precinct in Turvey Park. Wagga Wagga City Council and long-term cultural partner, the Multicultural Council of Wagga Wagga, are inviting Expressions of Interest from local performers, and food and drink vendors to help entertain and feed festival goers. Council’s Director Community Janice
Summerhayes said this year’s festival is expected to be well supported by locals and draw in crowds from across the wider region this spring. “Council’s FUSION festival has grown to become a highlight on the city’s annual event calendar since its inception in 2011,” Ms Summerhayes said. “Planning is underway for FUSION BOTANICAL in October in a new location at the Botanic Gardens Precinct in Turvey Park and we’re curating a diverse line-up of music and entertainment to be announced closer to the event.” Along with the live music, the diverse street food offering is one of the most
popular parts of this community festival. If you can add your traditional cuisine to the food line-up, please submit your expression of interest before 5pm on Friday 12 August 2022. “We’re also looking for community performers to help add to the vibrant festival atmosphere.” To apply, visit wagga.nsw.gov.au/ fusion and make your submission before 5pm on Friday 12 August 2022. To keep up to date with announcements for FUSION BOTANICAL, visit wagga.nsw.gov.au/ fusion or follow the Fusion Multicultural Festival Facebook and Instagram pages.

Works on a new Flowerdale Lagoon footbridge forging ahead
SPECIAL SIGNIFICANCE: Council’s Parks & Recreation Assets Officer Rob Owers with Wiradjuri Elder Uncle James Ingram, who conducted a cultural assessment at the footbridge replacement site. A project is underway to replace the old footbridge over the Flowerdale Lagoon anabranch on the Wiradjuri Trail, near the corner of Edward and Moorong streets to the west of the city centre. It is one of three high priority projects identified for the Wiradjuri Trail improvement works and has been funded by the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment – Crown Lands. Wagga Wagga City Council Parks & Recreation Assets Officer Rob Owers said the old bridge was approaching the end of its useful life and was in poor condition. “It also had a large step up on its eastern end, making it less accessible for people using the Wiradjuri Trail,” Mr Owers said. “It has now been removed and a temporary crossing for contractors put in place while works are carried out to prepare the site for the installation of the new 3-metre wide by 15-metre long footbridge. “The footbridge is made of new technology treated timber with an expected lifespan of 80 years, which is similar to a steel and concrete bridge.” The footings and screw piles are in place and the concrete footings are in the process of going in. A 70-tonne crane will then be used to lower in the new structure, as the site is in an awkward position. “The footbridge will provide a safe, all-inclusive crossing of the Flowerdale Lagoon, making walking and riding the trail easy and enjoyable for families and other users,” Mr Owers said.

“It will increase access for people of all abilities and will also enable cyclists to use this section of the Wiradjuri Trail.” An important aspect that was considered during the planning of the bridge replacement was that Flowerdale is a recognised ‘Aboriginal Place’ – an area of land recognised as a place of special significance to Aboriginal culture. Before work began on the bridge replacement, Wiradjuri Elder Uncle James Ingram conducted a cultural assessment at the site, which included digging the top 10 centimetres of the soil adjacent to the footings to check for First Nations artefacts. This section of the Wiradjuri Trail between Scott Street and Flowerdale will be closed during the works. The project is expected to be finished by the end of August, weather permitting.
