NEW EXHIBITION: Artist Mine Konakci looks over the installation of her work Remembering Gallipoli at the Historic Council Chambers this week.

A tale from both sides of the trenches is lining the hallways of the Museum of the Riverina’s Historic Council Chambers for the next four months. Photographer Mine Konakci’s Remembering Gallipoli shares the stories of the Anzac and Turkish (Ottoman) soldiers who fought at Gallipoli. Continued inside

Creating a safer community Council is working to keep the community safe by taking the lead on a proactive community approach to crime and graffiti prevention. Two documents were considered at the Council Meeting this week, the revised Crime Prevention Plan 2021 (CPP) and new Graffiti Management Plan (GMP). The revised CPP will go on public exhibition, while the new GMP was received by Councillors. The CPP outlines Council’s role in addressing the issue of crime and crime prevention. Director Community Janice Summerhayes

said Council will work closely with State Government and community organisations to deliver the plans. “In terms of crime prevention, Council’s role will be largely one of facilitation, alongside the delivery of our public programs and recreational infrastructure such as the new pump bike track and skate parks, as we work to complement the services currently being delivered in the community,” Mrs Summerhayes said. “Our role also involves lobbying for additional state and federal funding to assist in the delivery of State Government, nongovernment and other community service programs.” Closely linked to the CPP is the new GMP. This graffiti plan outlines preventative measures residents and businesses can take to reduce the amount of graffiti in their area.

“Graffiti is time consuming and difficult to remove. Simple measures can be taken to prevent graffiti such as introducing textured surfaces and installing appropriate lighting,” Ms Summerhayes said. “We encourage community members to read through the suggested preventative measures and to take advantage of the opportunity to participate in Graffiti Removal Day on Sunday 29 October.” The plans have been developed in close consultation with key stakeholders including the Wagga Wagga Local Area Command (LAC), NSW Department of Education and Communities, NSW Department of Justice, NSW Department of Family and Community Services, Wagga Wagga Family Referral Service, Anglicare and Police Citizens Youth Club (PCYC). Superintendent Bob Noble said both plans demonstrate a united approach to tackling crime and graffiti. “Police welcome the development of both plans as they highlight the importance of multi-agency collaboration, as well as presenting preventative actions that can be implemented with the community to reduce crime across our city,” he said. The revised CPP is on public exhibition until 27 October. Read the draft CCP online at wagga.nsw. gov.au/public and make a submission via email to council@wagga.nsw.gov.au. You can also deliver submissions to the Civic Centre (corner Baylis and Morrow streets) or mail them to "The General Manager, Wagga Wagga City Council, PO Box 20, Wagga Wagga NSW 2650".

General Manager recruitment almost complete All Councillors present selected a preferred candidate for the position of General Manager at an Extraordinary Council Meeting on Tuesday 26 September. “An official announcement on the new General Manager will be made when the recruitment

process is finalised, which may take a number of weeks,” Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM said. “Four candidates were interviewed by all Councillors present on Tuesday 26 September. At the following Extraordinary

Council Meeting, Councillors resolved for myself and the Deputy Mayor to progress the recruitment process with the successful applicant.” Cr Conkey said Local Government NSW Management Solutions has coordinated an

extensive merit-based recruitment process, including nation-wide advertising that resulted in 25 applications for the position by the 21 August closing date. A panel consisting of Cr Conkey, Deputy Mayor Dallas Tout, Councillor Vanessa Keenan,

Councillor Kerry Pascoe and Albury General Manager Frank Zaknich were involved with the short-listing of candidates. James Bolton remains in the General Manager position while the recruitment process is finalised.

There are now safer options for pedestrians crossing the road near Kooringal High School (pictured). New centre-of-road islands in Fay and Ziegler avenues, and a new concrete footpath in Fay Avenue to access the new refuge island, were installed last week. Associated kerb ramps, linemarking and signs have also been completed.

The works were delivered through the Roads and Maritime Service’s Pedestrian Infrastructure Safety Around School’s Program. A similar project funded through the program was delivered in Plunkett Drive near Mater Dei Catholic College in April this year. The program will also deliver new safety measures near Wagga Wagga High School, with these works to be completed later this year.

Coloured ribbons adorning trees has helped shine a light on an often dark topic. Earlier this month Council donated two trees to the Wagga Wagga branch of Wellways to help spread a message of suicide prevention throughout the community. Wellways, a mental health and disability support organisation, used the trees in stalls at two local shopping centres for a campaign to coincide with World Suicide Prevention Day 2017 (WSPD). Residents were asked to tie a coloured ribbon on the trees as a symbol of hope and regeneration. “The theme for WSPD was ‘take a minute, change a life’, so encouraging people to stop and reflect, have a conversation with the Wellways team and place a ribbon on the tree really resonated in a positive way with the community,” Wellways Regional Manager Zoe Evans said. As well as donating the trees for the campaign, Council has also now planted them in Collins Park and the native garden at the Botanic Gardens. “The symbolism of planting

trees shows our commitment to promoting growth, development, nurturing and is symbolic of encouraging life and the comfort we derive from trees and parks,” Ms Evans said. Parks Operations Supervisor Michael Gleeson said Council was pleased to be able to support such a great campaign.

“Council was approached by Wellways with the idea, and we were only too happy to help a local organisation raise awareness of such an important cause,” Mr Gleeson said. Wellways’ suicide prevention activities are supported by funding from the Australian Government under the PHN Program.

“As soon as I started researching I discovered a unique bond between the soldiers from both sides, almost like a friendship, which is quite strange for a war. “Enduring months of these arduous conditions in the trenches developed into soldiers throwing little gifts to each other.” Remembering Gallipoli has been exhibited in Australia and Turkey and took some time to put together. “Finding the descendants was like detective work and once you found them it took some time to hear back,” the Turkish-born Australian artist said.

Boredom-busting fun on offer at Little Big Day Out From pint-sized yoga to a spellbinding ride on a witch’s broomstick, Little Big Day Out is set to put a smile on your child’s dial on Thursday 5 October. Held each year in the Civic Centre Precinct, Wagga Wagga City Council’s Little Big Day Out sees staff create a morning of fun-filled activities for the community’s two to 12-year-olds. “Wagga Wagga prides itself on being a familyfriendly city and Little Big Day Out has proven to be a great event for our youngest community members over the years,” Council’s Director Community Janice Summerhayes said. “There is a wide variety of activities on offer, whether it’s something hands on, creative or active.” The always-popular Planning Permit Pursuit will be on again, with kids getting the chance to explore the Civic Precinct and go into the draw to win a family pass to Wicked and entry passes to the Oasis Regional Aquatic Centre. Kids can also get up close to the machines Council staff use, create a model playground and test out the Oasis’ water rollers.

COUNCILLOR COLUMN

Why not Wagga? This is the question I found myself asking earlier this week when I heard that the Federal Government was announcing their intention to set up an Australian

Space Agency. This question is why I requested a late agenda item be added to the meeting on Monday night recommending that Council explore opportunities on how Wagga may be involved in this new agency. I am the first to admit that there are still lots of details to come about the inception

Public Notices

of this agency, and it may turn out that Wagga cannot be involved. However, I thought it was important to put this item to Council as soon as possible for two key reasons. The first is that Wagga would benefit from this or any government agency setting up here as it would create more jobs and

councillor.hayes@wagga.nsw.gov.au

increase economic activity. The second reason for the urgency is that we cannot wait to be asked to the dance, we need to show our interest first as many other organisations and towns will be putting their hand up as well. I hope the community, the elected representatives at all levels of government, and the business community

all ask together ‘why not Wagga?’ and maybe, just maybe, Wagga can be part of this multibillion-dollar industry. Coming back down to Earth, I want to thank the Council staff and community members who participated in the spotlighting tour last week at Marrambidya Wetland, which is becoming

one of Wagga’s best features. It was fantastic. A quick shout out also to the kids on this tour who every two minutes would stop and yell with excitement “I found a spider”. What joy!

Thirty community members found out what goes bump in the night at the Marrambidya Wetland Walkabout last Friday (pictured). The event was held as part of biodiversity month and was the first time the annual spotlighting night had been held at the wetland.

F L AT S O V E R F L O W I N G W I T H FA U N A There are not many places in NSW where you can see squirrel gliders, a family of the three tawny frogmouths and at least 20 possums all in one night, all while the southern boobook calls in the distance. A hidden hotspot for wildlife, the Wilks Park reserve at the North Wagga Flats stretches across 34 hectares. Recognising the significance of this area, Wagga Wagga City Council organised a community-supported project in 2002 to improve the habitat. Fifteen years on, Natural Resource Management Officer David Read has looked back

on the site’s growth as part of biodiversity month. “Hollows in gum trees don’t start forming until the trees are about 150 years old, so it’s vital that we preserve the North Wagga Flats as best we can,” he said. “The mature hollow trees in the area provide habitat to the threatened squirrel glider, parrots and the barking owl, as well as to other marsupials, birds, bats, amphibians and invertebrates. “Over the past 15 years we have removed woody weeds, established native grasses, strategically planted local

The 2.6km trek around the wetland and along part of the Wiradjuri Walking track proved popular, with plenty of brush tail possums spotted. The ponds within the wetland are providing habitat for a variety of frogs species, which were producing a symphony of croaks and calls.
